I also remember as a kid buying balloons at theme parks and stuff, the balloons are held down by a weight at the bottom to keep them from flying off when you let go. These weights were usually cute shapes like elephants or (at Disney parks) Mickey Mouse ears. I think those are what the hearts at the end of Drifloon’s strings are meant to look like. A cute ghost ballon that ferries souls to the afterlife is a really clever concept, I like it!

That does make sense for Drifblim, but man, you’d think that when the devs noticed how few native fire types the Sinnoh region had while designing a fire type Elite 4 member they could have, y’know, added a couple more? Seriously, only 2 of his 5 Pokemon are actually fire type, and one of them is the region’s starter.

Considering the PokeDex entries of it taking children, I had this idea for a regional variant based off a popped balloon where Drifloon and Drifblim were hunted due to them kidnapping children because if you take PokeDex entries at face value, it’s a wonder why several Ghost Pokemon haven’t been hunted to extinction.

While John Wayne Gacy did perform as a clown at children’s birthday parties, he didn’t use this disguise to lure children to their deaths. He mainly preyed on teen boys, usually offering them alcohol or drugs. I also wouldn’t say he started the whole stranger danger phase of the 80s, that was more due to the kidnapping of young boys, two of which became very famous and very tragic cases...and boy this comment got dark for a Pokémon video. In any case Drifloon is one of my favorite Pokémon!

And the whole ‘don’t take candy from strangers’ and ‘check your Childrens Halloween candy for razor blades/drugs’ stems from a father who poisoned his son’s large pixie stick candy that he gave him on Halloween (claiming it was handed out at some unknown house in the neighborhood) for the freshly made life insurance policy he took out on his kid… killed his kid for money basically and thought he would get away with it. But at the time it caused a huge moral panic that lunatics and/or satanists were trying to kill kids through poisoned candy… Ruined Halloween for decades…

Duskull and it's line actually has a reason for it, being proper psychopomps who don't just steal away living children. They are specifically in charge of making sure dead people stay in the afterlife, and hunt down fugative souls who managed to make it back to the living world. In the anime the first time we see a dusklops, everyone THINKS it's being a dangerous monster attacking people. But nope. It was trying it's best to protect them from a ghost criminal who was trying to kill children.

PMD Explorers/Super players know that it’s not an ordinary balloon, it’s the devil itself. 4 dreaded words: **Drifloon used Ominous Wind!** And it doesn’t help matters that they’re found in storyline dungeons in the games they appear in, spamming their Ominous Wind to either one shot you or knock you to red health from the other side of the room. This applies to both Drifloon and Drifblim.

I personally associate balloons (specifically a red one floating away) with corruption and off screen death. This was imprinted on me from childhood when i watched an ultraman movie where the should be hero, ultraman tiga killed an innocent mother & daughter holding a red balloon. This imagery must have been iconic somehow cause it is constantly referenced in later tsuburaya productions.

Helium is much less of a limited resource than it is really, really annoying to get out of air. And when you put helium into a regular latex rubber balloon, it's basically going back into the atmosphere really, really quickly. There are other materials that can hang on to helium a bit better, but it's pretty much a gas that can escape almost any kind of containment over time, it seeps through the smallest crack, and latex has such big pores that it's basically like a sieve to this noble gas. That's why helium balloons deflate in a matter of hours unless they're made of that much denser silver material which I for the life of myself can't remember the name of, my brain apparently stops working this late at night, I really should sleep since I have work in six hours, but new Lockstin video!

Ghost is my favorite type, so there was no way I wasn’t gonna use this thing, but man……the hoops I had to jump through to get this freak’n thing…. You can only catch it in one single specific place, and ONLY on a Friday but ONLY after you defeat Team Galactic in that specific location but if you defeat them ON a Friday (which is what I did) you HAVE to wait for NEXT Friday, it won’t happen that same Friday. Also the game prevents you from messing around with the Switch’s clock because if you do that it soft-locks the Pokémon from appearing at all for a full 24 hours, even if it is set to a Friday…. I had to change my Switch’s clock to a Thursday, and then wait an actual real life 24 hours in order to get my drifloon on what was in reality a Sunday.

I remember a similar thing happened to me, but instead of balloons, it was anything related to dinosaurs. I don’t know why, but I would be offended by the mere mention of Dinosaurs when I was younger. 2:18 Haha, Lockstin knows. The devs of Senran Kagura actually used pudding as a reference for their boob physics. Now something balloon related: In the xXxHoLiC anime, there's a little creature who stores dreams and nightmares in balloons, for then sell them to someone else, a Dream Trader of sorts, which is pretty cool (and by the theme and appearance, it was obviously based on the Baku, you know, just like Musharna). I like Drifloon and Drifblim btw, much like how I like almost all ghost Pokémon.

Balloons can be loud but recently, I had a theater like presentation, that I had to blow a balloon up while under a thin bed sheet, I thought it would be extremely loud due to the sound being somewhat trapped (the sound would be less loud to the others outside) but it wasn't loud at all, it was like as loud as a person talking

While we're on the whole "destructive flaming baloons" spirit: In Brazilian midsummer festivals, it used to be a tradition to light up hot air baloons and release them to drift around in the wind. Said practice has since been forbidden, because they used to cause wildfires wherever they landed, often enough in the middle of woodlands :)

Drifloon’s and Drifblim’s Japanese names are absolute genius. “Fuwante” (drifloon) pulls from “fuwan” (onomatopoeia for floating), “fuantei” (unstable) and possibly “te” (hand). “Fuwaraido” (drifblim) comes from “Fuwa” (a variation of “fuwan”), “raido” (“ride”), and “Fuwaraidou” (phrase-word meaning approximately “never in the same place for long/goes with the flow”).

Great video, though I noticed an issue with some of the reasoning: Drifblim can’t breed with that many Fire types. Slugma, Litwick, and Rotom-Heat are the only ones, and only because they’re all Amorphous egg group.

Honestly, Drifloon was a childhood favorite of mine. I caught it and used one on my original Diamond team when I was eight. I was unaware of its dex entry and simply caught one because I thought it was cute (to the point where I would refuse to evolve it cuz I thought drifblim was ugly).

I am pretty sure they have figured out how to create more Helium from other elements. Similarly they have figured out how to make Gold from Mercury. Also at least a decade ago I remember learning that some labs have figured out how to extract Nuclear Elements from Ocean water that can be used in Nuclear Power Plants.

I have an idea to a series. In it you take either a country or multiple countries and then you look up different animals, plants, objects and myths there are there and translate it to what Pokémon would live naturally in that place of the world if it was in the Pokémon world. Here’s a few examples on Scandinavia: Animals: PIGEONS = PIDGEY line, PIDOVE line. CROWS = MURKROW line. DEERS = STANTLER. SARDINES = WISHIWASHI. OWLS = HOOTHOOT line, ROWLET line. BEAVERS = BIDOFF line. SEAGULLS = WINGULL line. VIPERS = EKANS line. BEARS = TEDDIURSA line. Plants: CHERRY TREES = CHERRUBI line. BERRIES = BOUNSWEET line. CHRISTMAS TREE = SNOVERN line. and that’s just a few examples.

Fun fact: After rescuing the girls father from Valley WindWorks in BDSP, the girl says "I hope the balloon Pokemon will visit again!" So either Jigglypuff, or something that wants to kidnap her. Edit: Anyone know if that's in the original?

Haven’t played BDSP but I remember that line, so it’s probably in the originals. If I remember correctly you could catch drifblim there after you beat team galactic there

In all of my years of playing Pokemon, I've never managed to encounter a wild Drifloon. It was one of those ghost types that I've always wanted to catch, but never knew how to find them (even now, I admittedly still don't know how).

I was not expecting to see Osomatsu-San in this video, haha! For the record, Chibita (the one in the balloon) is an18y/o! The sextupets and Totoko (the girl) are in their early-mid 20s!

4:34 On the topic of what Drifblim is capable of: Why can Drifblim as a Ghost/FLYING Types only learn 4 Flying Type Moves??? That always was and still is terrible. 11:14 How? How were these Balloon Animals made? You don't only need tiny balloons but also the ability to knot them correctly and at this (lack of) size... 14:18 Fun fact about Tabitha King: Her Novel "Small World" is hands down scarier than any Stephen King novel I've ever read... (Granted, I only read three.)

When i saw Drifloon and Drifblim for the first time, i didnt get the Ghost typing and the whole kidnapping thing until this video and several origins explain it. Now I understand why this line is scary but cute.

Drifloon’s hands have always reminded me of the thin plastic weights you can put on balloons to ground them at like parties. I’ve seen them come in different shapes but hearts are pretty common.
