Hollywood writers and showrunners are now taking up jobs as bartenders and doordashers just to make ends meet as the industry contracts drastically.

The one comment about being a "even being a queer POC and not being able to get a job" says more than they wanted it to. It's a sign that companies are starting to realize they literally can't afford to just hire based on those things because they aren't making money. It's almost as if now there will have to be decisions based on merit and profitability.

It also speaks to the fact that people know, or at least expect, that they can get jobs based on their color, gender, and / or their sexual preferences.

I was going to say the same thing. I'm a white gay man and don't expect people to bend over backwards because I tick a box. I expect them to hire me or fire me based on my ability to do my job and my consistency in that job. Now if she was a queer person of colour producing material that was great and we all wanted to watch then you go girl. But producing crap and expecting it to be bought and made just because of some diversity quota is not going to fly outside of a very small bubble.
@lawrencetalbot8346

It also shows that everything they went on strike for completely blew up in their face. They demanded that an actor, animator, and writers be exactly the same type of demographic that they are portraying/drawing/writing which makes it impossible for studios to hire for anything other than simple characteristics. It is much easier to hire generic white guy then look for the golden goose darklesbian with a disability. So she will never find work unless a project specifically calls for her lottery of identity politics

We are not creating new things in the last 20 years. There are so few talented people in power in Hollywood today that it's a shame. Bob Eiger was the WEATHERMAN. Bill Gates wants the authority to FORCE everyone to take every vaxxine he is paying for. He wants us all to EAT BUGS AND NOTHING ELSE, BECAUSE HUMANS AND OUR NEED FOR FOOD IS DESTROYING THE PLANET. Gates now owns more farm land and any other individual in the nation, but he isn't farming with that farm land. DO YOU REALLY WANT THE SOLE SOURCE OF YOUR ENTERTAINMENT COMING FROM MEN LIKE BILL GATES OR GEORGE SOROS... BOTH MASTERMINDS OF PROPAGANDA? That would be no different that Chinese TV produced by the CCP. Entertainment is already quite broad, and YOU DON'T EVEN SEE IT. Americans love their sports and partcipating in those sports as amateurs. We also enjoy hunting, or just plain target shooting; and boating, skiing, and mountain climbing and hiking, and camping and and and. Folks who don't live in the big cities, have been outside for entertainment for hundreds of years. When decent TV was moved to Cable and you had to pay extra for it, the rural folks couldn't afford to pay for it, and just stopped watching anything more than the evening news and Johnny Carson at bed time. It's the POST MILLENIALS THAT HAVE STOPPED GOING OUTSIDE, AND WERE RAVENOUS CONSUMERS OF THAT WOKE PROPAGANDA. And Suddenly, they've discovered what Good Hollywood looked like and are just now watching the better tv shows and movies from 20 to 50 years ago. So, there is hope for them, yet, and their re-education could get them back to normal, rational, thought.

Studios should probably just hire 50 writers and keep them on contract permanently (sharing them between shows) to eliminate the need to hire someone for three months and having to pay them enough to last until their next paycheque. Thing is, if you look back, there were musicians and actors and writers who were good enough to produce decent product in different genres. By contrast, modern hollywood seems borderline incapable of producing a decent film in ANY genre. Writing as a gig means that maybe you get one job and think you've made it. If you were just an employee, then you'd get stability and experience, rather than have 1000 waiters periodically able to get a writing gig and quitting their day jobs.

I definitely like the imagination aspect, it's part of why I love reading so much. During a good story, I forget that I'm reading words on a page and visualize so much of the story. Budget cuts and DEI are top reasons for why "entertainment" has been declining. There is another major factor though, that has yet to be discussed---the co-opting of our school system. I can remember this starting back in the 1970's. Suddenly, in school, "Individuality", "Creativity", and "Imagination" were seen as negative traits to be punished. Imagination and Creativity were beaten out of school children. Success in school become solely dependent upon "following the herd". Corporations would no longer hire bright, creative people, as such people would "rock the boat". Gen X was the first to suffer under this oppression. And, it has only gotten worse with each successive generation. By the late 90's, the market for unique clothing and artistic items had dropped dramatically. The new trend was to be just like everyone else---a walking stereotype. After 2000, the lack of new creative talent began to show in Hollywood, with more sequels, prequels, remakes, and rehashes. Even if we reversed these trends today, it would still take two decades to see improvement. True, there are still intelligent, creative people out there. But, they turned their backs on society, long ago.

Minimum wage and Unions are two political responses to the same problem, businesses doing what business does and getting the most value for the least cost, specifically from their labor. A better solution is to have a guaranteed government job of hard labor for every citizen who want it that provides a livable wage, health care, and the opportunity to take any educational opportunity you want while working that job for free once. That guaranteed job still needs to be able to fire a person if they don't work, or repeatedly show up late, or just constantly take sick days without being sick. If a person gets fired from the guaranteed job they should have 6 months before they can take that job again. The solution I recommend here is to provide a minimum starting point for wage negotiations. While it has some problems it provides a safety net for people on the lower economic scale, will inject money into the economy, and since it is a hard labor job will encourage people to find another one. By having a guaranteed fall back job bad bosses will have less power over their employees seeing a dramatic increase in the quality of management in the private sector.

The other day I saw a video of a guy, I think he may have been a state legislator, wearing a wig, a ridiculous amount of make up, and a dress, standing in front of a microphone saying don't look at me like I'm mentally disturbed. I kind of got that same feeling listening to that quote from the writer who said you know things are bad when a black queer woman like me can't find work. My reaction to both is, okay, so is this just a rhetorical exercise? They are both the same person. Both believe they are entitled to a job or some level of respect because they have gone out of their way to check the boxes required in the identity hierarchy of victimhood. Just 10 years ago you may have heard someone say; "I deserve some respect, I mean it's not like I'm standing up here wearing a wig and a dress" or "You know times are tough when someone with a long track record of success can't find work." Today we don't inhabit that old world but I think at least as far as entertainment is concerned we are seeing a return to normalcy. Nature has a way of returning to a state equilibrium. It's a natural tendency inherent to all ecosystems. Anyone who has studied systems theory understands that axiom. Entertainment, like politics, generally runs downstream from the culture. Hollywood has tried to reverse that, tried to drive the train since the mid-1950s but at the end of the day people want good stories. People don't have the amount of disposable income they once did so they are becoming more discerning about how they spend what little they have. Independent films made on smaller budgets are enjoying a greater ROI and theaters are catching on, giving them access to more screens and when they aren't running indie films they are running old TV shows and rerunning movies with proven appeal. Hollywood is dying the death it has been working toward for all these years. DIE is better acronym for the studios then DEI. May it not rest in peace.

@@looinrims Oh he was serious as a heart attack, and sorry, but nothing says I am mentally disturbed quite like slapping on make up, falsies and a wig then showing up in a dress and jumping into a "I am woman hear me roar" routine. That said, it's one thing to live a delusional existence, and quite another to demand people to play along with you. When you reach the point as a culture where you think you can create your own reality and change nature as you see fit, that's called a tipping point. But I believe in redemption. I hope one day the spell will be broken but I will never play along. As Alexander Solzhenitsyn put it; "The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie. One word of truth outweighs the world.” The lie is the point. It's not that you believe it, simply that you go along. When you do, you lose.

Those who could have spoken out against the tide of sewage didn't because they wanted to keep their big salary. Anyhow, now they all have a new line to learn. Do you want fries with that order?

Exactly. I wonder sometimes which I hate more. Those who gave us the finger when gleefully destroying IPs or those who sat back and let them because they either lacked the balls to speak against 'the right side of history' or their cushy job was more important. They should've envisaged it was unsustainable. If they didn't, what the hell are they doing in business? Still haven't forgotten the excuses from Netflix for its first ever sub drop. The bosses actually said they didn't forsee that the pandemic uptick when we were all locked in would NOT to continue projecting upward whilst a drop didn't even enter their heads. Again, how are they in business? This is bottom all the way to the top stuff.

Fr. Common sense tells you that attacking people who you want money from is never a good idea and then doubling down on what they told you they didn't want is just insanity. There's a reason the saying 'never bite the hand that feeds you' exists.

I am waiting for some hard working gen x youngsters to make a weekly “TV” series on KZfaq. No need for expensive cameras, or super expensive sets. Good writing and minimal mindset and they make their money w ad sales, exclusive vignettes, and other creative monetization! These new kids can do it

Putting in a minimum number of writers would have been a stupid idea during the so-called golden age, never mind now when the medium is already almost dead.

"I can't get a job in my field right now." Okay? Boohoo I guess. I mean yeah it sucks but it happens. I have 2 engineering degrees and I haven't been able to find any jobs after I was laid off. So I became a field technician and tester for industrial power breakers. Is it what I went to school for? No. But I adapted to the market. They need to do the same.

Despot had it wrong, dude. I would LOVE to see another Marvel movie... if it was as good as Iron Man or Captain America: The First Avenger. I would be thrilled if there was a new Star Wars movie or TV show... if it had the "feel", like season one of The Mandalorian or Rogue One. We aren't bored. We're just tired of being told we're evil because we happen to be white, male, heterosexual, or some unfortunate combination of the three. THAT is why Hollywood is dying. It's not fan fatigue - we're just tired of being hated.

Maybe they should take the advice the good folks in Hollywood gave the Kentucky miners when they lost their jobs, "learn to code". Sound advice! Maybe they should just learn to code.

The issue with these people and most people in general is that despite being told that the jobs they want are high risk low employment demand, high demand to be employed temporary work they scoff at you then get surprised and outraged that you were right (I’ve warned so many people who are now experiencing this because they ignored me) it’s as if they believe they can warp reality to suite their wants despite being told otherwise. Which is a general problem with the current generations. They think they can change reality to one where they are always employed no matter what, they think they can change reality so that everything they write is adored by all, they think they can change reality so that they never experience adversity or difficulties ever in their lives.

They've been taught that their whole lives, though! That's the problem! These halfwits grew up hearing things like "MY truth" and "MY lived reality" and such. They never really got told to straighten their sh*t out and keep their feet on the ground. By all means, study the arts... but pick up a trade to keep a roof over your head for when (not if - WHEN) you CAN'T make a living with frippery. Am I wrong?

Love this panel! Hollywood gets what it deserves-expect it to get worse & to inevitably see the end of the Theater chains. Very sad for the normal people in the industry (camera operators, set design, etc)

Wait a minute... are you telling me that the disastrous gender and racist ideology displays that have been presented as films and TV shows coupled with suicidal writers and actors strikes have led to a depression and contraction of the entertainment industry?! What an entirely unexpected turn of events! Whoever could have predicted it?

I’ve been watching old B&W TV shows on the Roku channel and they are immensely entertaining! Watching preachy people, who are narcissistic, obnoxious people projecting a sense of life that is something to run from. Run for your life.

3:45 With TLP here. I remember the entitled children of comics in a successful comic book artist's twitter feed crying how even if they got work, it was enough to support themselves. I enjoyed dropping the story of Aaron Sorkin writing A Few Good Men on napkins while he was tending bar at a broadway theatre. Artists working those jobs to support their art has been the way it is for centuries.
