Madam Web was never meant to be an active hero. She's a stereotypical "Spiritual Guide" meant to give mystic wisdom to the heroes and villains that cross her path. She's a "It's dangerous to go alone. Take this." character. She's in the same category as the Oracle from The Matrix, the wizard Shazam or The Ancient One from Doctor Strange... Making that movie is such a weird decision.

When I saw the title I didn't believe it. WHY would, of ALL the awesome characters in Spider-Man, they decide "You know what we should do? We should do a MADAM WEB movie! But we make her gay, and we make her fucking lame!" She's GONNA be gay, there's FOUR women in this movie, she's gonna be gay.

A lot of people who don't follow Spider-Man comics aren't aware that Ezekiel Sims - the villain of this movie - was originally a mentor and buddy to Spider-Man, an all-around cool guy and pretty interesting character. The fact that they turned him into a villain who's tryna smack the glass ceiling down on these strong powerful wahmen is ANOTHER uncanny similarity to Captain Marvel/ The Marvels, who did something incredibly similar to Marr-Vell

@@stalhandske9649 In Ezekiel's case, it was J. Michael Straczynski, the "Babylon 5" guy. He was trying to "expand the mythos" or something, trying to put his own spin on things. For the most part, he was a fairly solid writer for Spider-Man, then Joe Quesada ordered him to write "One More Day" and forced him to put his name to it (Straczynski hated it and wanted to disavow any connection he had to that piece of crap). After that he stopped giving any effs, and that paved the way for Dan Sloott to move his corpulent tuchus into the driver's seat.

@renji0002 yeah wouldn't surprise me honestly. Like I get the whole idea that diversity just for the sake of diversity is not great and obviously doesn't equal success or good movies, but come on, a traditionally white character gets a black actor cast to play them in a new series of movies and you decide this is the moment to stop watching... @@lucasbennett7717 This tired old argument again? It's pretty obvious that the reason people are tired of swaps isn't because of the color they become, but because they're changed for the sheer sake of tokenization and politics to begin with. It's a red flag that signals the overall tone and respect towards the source material of the entire movie, and it has a very high rate of being on point. Just because you gladly eat the slop you are fed doesn't mean everyone else finds it palatable. You talk about self awareness, but you're making such a dishonest argument here.

The one thing I will say in this thing's favor: the Spider-Sense is arguably the ability to see one second into the future, so a Spider-person seeing minutes into the future is actually a neat idea. Everything else is, as you said, happening because of licensing. Madame Web is the older mentor character who can't throw down like a champ anymore but can occasionally point the young pup in the right direction. I can think of at least three Spider-Women and she is none of them. The studio wanted a woman to jump around in spandex and Madame Web was the name they had access to.

The very notion that a woman can encounter a man without being either the most important person in his life or surpass him in importance is utterly unthinkable to current Marvel writers. Madame Web is a great supporting character but supporting character is the role that suits her best. Her gimmick is even tied to that of a pre-existing male hero. Not every supporting female character needs to be thrust into the role of protagonist or deuteragonist. The inverse is rarely even attempted even where it might be successful. There is no Tuxedo Mask spin-off to Sailor Moon because no one is clamoring for one.

Of all the raceswaps in Disney and Marvel canon, Nick Fury's is probably the LEAST gratuitous. The Sony Spiderverse was supposed to be a thing as far back as the Amazing Spider-Man movies. There was even a scene in TASM2 that was the setup for the Sinister Six film, as it showed the villain equipment for several villains, all set up and ready to go, in Oscorp's basement. After things like that, I knew the Sony Spiderverse was going to be lame.

They're so confident that they can't write their own strong female character that they're practically screaming it at this point. Rather than using one of the hundreds of existing female Marvel characters and starting their own series using her, they've co-opted an elderly woman _just_ to ride on the coattails of Spider-Man's popularity. EDIT: _Of f*cking course_ the trailer uses a slow, minor key Billie Eilish pop song. The predictability is laughable at this point. This is going to bomb spectacularly.

I think she’s the most underrated spider woman and she’s been dead for over a decade now. She’s not a mainstream character and this could’ve shed some light on her, instead she’s looked like she’s set up to be the token black character. It’s funny to me that even with Sony’s misguided efforts to make Spider-man movies without Spider-man, they still manage to scrape together the weirdest, bottom of the barrel concepts. A Venom movie? Ye Venom’s got plenty of material to adapt centred around him. The Sinister 6? Maybe a few of them have their own brief stints as stand alone characters, and maybe with an ensemble you have enough to build a story on without Spider-man. Morbius? Now you’re getting to the point where you’re just making whatever generic sci-fi horror movie and putting a comic character’s name on it. Madame Web…? What? No.

How to make a Sequel or Reboot according to modern day sci-fi fantasy writers: P - PANDER. Pander as hard as you possibly can to women and minorities, but make sure that men are treated like garbage. U - UNDERCUT any old heroes. Make them look as weak, pathetic and useless as you possibly can, ensuring that anyone who identified them feels like crap. T - TRUST that audience will gobble up any slop you throw at them A - ATTACK any critics as "ist-aphobes" C - CALL all fan theories "dumb" to rub salt into the wound H - HATE anyone who isn't of the correct gender/skin tone I - IGNORE any of the lore or backstory of the world C - CRITICISE the original story for not being "diverse" enough K - KILL any negative reviews by "incentivising" review sites to delete them IN-clude as many deconstructive tropes as possible IT-erate the story by including random multiverses for no reason AND most importantly...MAKE IT GAY. Here's an idea for how to do this character - she's an older lady, 50-60 something maybe, who has led a normal, unremarkable life, but has an interest in the occult. For reasons that are not important, she develops this ability to see the future, and is suddenly thrust into the role of saving people from disaster. With little physical strength and no contacts in the super-hero universe: she has to learn to use her guile as she is thrust into a criminal underworld world she has no previous experience of, to foil human-scale criminals with evil intent. I don't know if that would be a hit - but it would at least be *different* to what we're used to seeing.

Out of all the characters in Spider-Man's lore, Madame Web is such a weird choice to do a film on. They could have done a film on Spider-Gwen or Peni Parker (the cool anime-looking character from Into The Spider-Verse). Or, just a crazy thought, maybe just do a Sinister Six film and treat it like a heist movie, where the villains can just do their thing without trying to turn them into heroes. But seriously, the time of live-action superhero films is over now. Across the Spider-Verse has proven that there is money to be made in animation (although as long the budget isn't too big) and that's where future superhero films should go as well. If I were Sony, I would immediately green-light a brand-new Spider-Man cartoon film (more likely anime style), with a new voice actor for the character, and the title being: "Ultimate Spider-Man: Power and Responsibility". But even then, we all know that the Woke crap will only ruin it. That's the issue. No matter what new ideas are thought up to try and fix something, the people who are pushing this woke stuff that ruined what came before are going to take advantage because they can't take the idea of something that isn't theirs making money.

I liked Atomic Blonde.... For one she at least got hurt. Blood, an unholy amount of bruises, a blown eye, cracked ribs. She took more damage in that one film than all the rest in your list combined. Also helps that Charlize is actually physically intimidating. She's almost 6' tall and spent her life doing actual punishing things. She's the Hollywood version of Michelle Yeoh. Had a career in ballet(which is extremely physical and all about pain management) and got hurt so couldn't do the millimeter perfect technical work anymore required to hit those jumps, went into films as an actress and stuntwoman, got hurt in a stunt and couldn't do some of that anymore, became more of a straight actress but still does lower level stunts. They've oddly parallel careers. And noone complains about Michelle Yeoh. I think it's because Charlize says things that do lead into the current trope of how bad the Strong Female Character has become, without people realizing she actually has led a life which lets her say those things. They just see the pretty blonde woman, not the person who's done things none of her male costars would even attempt. That and also didn't have Jackie Chan in the background for two decades pointing out everything she did.

The only thing that Sony has going for it with their Spider-Man rights is the animated movies and their deal with the MCU. That's it. Every time they try to do something with the rest of Spider-Man's characters it falls flat on its face. This trailer and Kraven the Hunter prove that no one on the marketing team or even the producers have an ounce of hope or care about the live-action movies to be profitable and a success. The only reason that they are doing this is to keep the brand because their deal with Marvel and their animated movies are the only ones making money for them. So, instead of doing this on-brand-but-also-off-brand spin-offs, they should just focus on what they can do with the animated universe.

Since I haven't seen the series in years, though, the most I remember from her is from the finale, where she took a back seat for the Beyonder to make the Secret Wars crossover of several marvel heroes and villains, as well as the spiderverse operation to stop the carnage Spiderman from erasing all universes. There was one instance in the 2010s Ultimate Spiderman series where madam web appeared as a teenager who could see the web of fate, or something like that, and could channel into the multiverse, or something like that (which seems closer to this trailer here)

Honestly the movie could have been about a spider-person, either a version of Peter Parker or just someone in general from the spiderverse, having moments where the feel constant pounding headaches as if voices are crying out in pain and then vanishing and then that character finds themselves being chased by morlun and encounters madame web who guides them along with ezekiel to training to take on Morlun. I would end the movie with morlun beaten but not defeated. Like planning his return so we meet his family and set up like a crazy spiderverse event

@@jamoretz9149true, but in this movie, in the "current" time in the movie, they don't have their powers yet, only Madame Web does, even then only recently, which is why the villain is trying to kill them before they get their powers, because he knows they will defeat him (possibly with Peter Parker's help) decades later, after they get their powers.

Didn't even need the trailer to know that a Madame Web movie was a moronic decision from the get go. The fact they actually green lit this after the morbius disaster only shows how out of touch sony executives are with this genre.

So let me get this straight. Four Spider related female characters, none of them all that popular, are fighting a bootleg Spider-Man, and this trailer is set to a track about sleep paralysis. Yep, that checks out.

The scissors comment got me laughing. This particular clip is lively. I enjoy listening to these clips as I hear the rough cut versions of your polished critical drinker videos. Your craft isn’t easy by showing these clips discussing the latest trash put out and you’re making headway into creating content viewers want to listen to. You’re not Morgan Freeman (who sounds interesting reading a phone book-Lego Movie), nor Barry Manilow (I don’t see you married yet!), nor James Earl Jones (well, maybe putting yourself in an Iron Lung you’ll sound like him) but you are Freakin’ Critical Drinker, Man! I don’t need baritone voice, I need a voice of reason diluted with some well deserved whiskey! Hey, your stickers need to drop by a dollar, then I’ll buy two! As for your merch shirt, it’ll be on my Xmas gift list. Cheers!

Most of Marvel's 1960s characters are pretty simple and you get their relative scope in the first issue, if not the first ten. I'm noticing that many characters post 1973 or so get way too convoluted to distill into one film. Which is probably why Captain Marvel isn't clicking. Comics Carol has a long roller coaster of a history that just didn't get compressed into a movie very well.

It’s hilarious how so behind the curve Sony is. They produce movies that look like they belong in the 2000s and still produce with the mindset that it’s still the 2010s and cinematic universes are all the rage.
