Roush's Stage 3 Mustang combines some of the best bits of the Boss 302 and the Shelby GT 500, in a unique package that's tuned to the max right off the showroom floor. But is it the best Mustang you can buy new? Let's find out.

I just bought a ‘14 stage 3 with the aluminator engine upgrade. 679 HP Dyno tested. Had 3250 miles and basically a new car. Paid $43k for it. NEVER buy these brand new. It’s a great car and I’m enjoying the F out of it. I’m 51 yrs old and tho Matt is right about the seats, and the gauge it’s still an amazing experience to drive. The side Louvers don’t really bother me and I don’t see any 3M tape on the hood so that must be something that one car has. Great review Matt. Thanks for posting about this amazing car.

I'm liking the fact that the Tuned episodes from about 2 months ago to now it's been like an americanized Chris Harris on Cars. No disrespect to Matt and his crew, and yes, I know people like to compare the two of you on a kind of snarky way, but I don't intend to put you down, I actually enjoy it, Matt is proving me he's much more than every boring car reviewer out there on KZfaq, the guy knows his stuff, makes it funny, has his own style and even gives advice, like the one on the end of this video. Pretty cool video, nice Mustang, thank you Matt and crew. Keep it up.

I owned a 300zx, 350z and a GTO. The solid rear isn't that bad, it puts the power down in a way that most of you don't understand. Launching from a stop, drifting and so forth it feels solidly planted and gets amazing traction compared to the IRS cars I've owned, Hauling serious ass on a bumpy road is going to feel sketchy in any car. Who races flat out over bumpy roads other than tarmac rally races anyway?
@black2011gt
@black2011gt 10 жыл бұрын
Oops.. The car I'm referring to was the 2011 Gt track pack. I ran 12.7 in the quarter with a tuned ecu on all season tires. Quite a nice car for 30 grand. The 350z costs about the same new and the ride was so low and harsh it was scarier to drive over bumpy roads than any other car I've been in, I ran 14.2 in the quarter mile with it and I'm sure my Mustang could pass it on outside through a corner even with it's IRS, sickeningly stiff suspension and all.

XavierJ61 it's not a good example as this car weight nothing so you can't compare, and I'll even say that it's useless to compare any cars to justify the efficacity of the solid axle as there's too much parameters rigidity of the chassi ,tyre dimension,softness ;set up.... the AE86 would be even more awesome with independant suspension, but the price will be awesome too, it's called compromise ; )

i love how he tells it like it is, i own a regular 2011 gt and its awesome! quick as hell (i have basic mods and for the most part, no one can keep up with it), but everything is is garbage... brakes, suspension (unless its on a perfectly smooth road), and interior materials suck. but that being said, i love it.. alot

I owned a mustang so I can say this... Mustang's have been good looking car, and cheaper way to go very fast. When you charge $65K it doesn't serve that purpose anymore, so youhave to really really love this car not to consider it's compitition at that price point. I think one is better off customizing a GT that way they want, for me big power and big brakes is all I want.

The pricing given here sounds like that of a fully loaded Stage 3/ phase 3 which is an Aluminator engine upgrade. I just bought a 2014 Stage 3/phase 1 Roush, fully loaded, gt track pack and Recaro seats. I paid 52K . Don't let the misinformation in this video regarding pricing put you off of a Roush Stage 3. They are incredible vehicles.

Farah earned a BAJILLION points for finally telling people to STFU about the live rear axle. Anyone who's reviewed it has said, in so many words, "The only people who will care are people who won't be interested in a mustang in the first place." To me it makes perfect sense because as a consumer I would like to have fun with my car and ENJOY it rather than assume it's superior for all of the boxes you can check of some bullshit list. For ALL of the the knocking MT does of the live rear it's never ceases to amaze me that the mustang (v6) still needs something as little as tires to destroy cars costing twice as much and with "better" technology.

No shock here Roush has always made mustang better as most of fords track victories were won by Roush and a lot of the improvements to the stock mustangs was from Roush's think tank.

I would rather buy the 2013 GT500. Yes, it is a lot of money for a mustang. Would a Corvette be a good alternative? Yeah. One could buy a GT and do similar mods for quite a bit cheaper, but they won't have a warranty. When my buddy blew up the engine and transmission in his 2010 Camaro SS at 10,000 mi, it cost over $9,000 to fix. Luckily Chevrolet paid for everything. I like peace of mind, do you?

You want to dig back to the roots and see who's right? Throw a 350z, S2000, MX-5, really any other sports car on a curvy road and then throw a Mustang with them and tell me which handles better. These things were built to be heavy, obnoxiously loud, powerful and fucking fast in a straight line. So it pisses me off when I see people comparing a luxurious sports car to these monsters.

I love mustang, but, I think I would build my own! When you start to pay for all those add on parts from the manufacturer like that, you have to pay all the overhead! karl jacobson yes, and then when you blow your motor from something being done not quite right... ford probably isn't going to honor your warranty when they see a big honkin blower strapped to the block. it is a lot of money though. cool car, but bad performance per dollar.
@karljacobson1841
@karljacobson1841 9 жыл бұрын
spookypunky okay, a stock mustang is nice and fast, holds it's value for a decade or so, then the value starts to be balanced by the new changes in the market, demand for that model, trends at the time. Remember the SVO mustang with the four banger turbo? It fell out of favor with the times, dropping the value. Is that car still worth more than the eight cylinder brother? With no improvements, no appeal to today's driver. Is less more?
@karljacobson1841
@karljacobson1841 9 жыл бұрын
kingcrimson234 I understand what you mean, some of the things you do to a new car can void the warranty, I am not talking about a new car. Like I said, buy a stock older car cash, and rebuild it. As far as warranties go, the manufacturer has a limited warranty, the shop you decided to go to better back their freck'in work! The size of blower you use, that could be interesting, as you probably know, size does matter. The idea here, is to keep your car up with technologies of today. Instead of the stock car with all original parts, sitting in your garage, afraid to take it over sixty thousand miles, or whatever. Who wants to push an old stock car to it's limits, nobody. Take that car and put today's brakes, and tight tolerance block, built for boost, and overdrive transmission, and a new set of wheels, bam! Fun! In my opinion, that is fun. But, if you like stock statues....go for it! :-)

Jyan Lan Oh wait.. Hes talking shit about this mustang to.
@2013FiveOh
@2013FiveOh 10 жыл бұрын
Jyan Lan What shitty parts are on the GT500? The engine is still reliable and solid at 800+ rwhp (900+ crank hp), the driveshaft is engineered for WELL in excess of 200 mph, as is the entire front fascia and underbody/rear aero effects and the stock tremec has been in the 8's @ 160mph under a load of a Kenne Bell 3.6L cranking out 1,150rwhp and almost 1,100 rear wheel ft-lbs. If you're going to talk about brakes, shove it. Nobody hits the road courses on stock brake pads & fluid unless they're running factory carbon ceramics. Regular stock brakes are supposed to bite well with little to no heat build up, as in a panic brake situation for safety reasons. Race brake pad compounds aren't expensive, but really only work well once they're hot. When you go to the track, you set your car up. Not to mention that the GT500 has more brake fade than the ZL1 (for example) because the Shelby is so much faster coming into the braking zones, as i've explained to numerous people before.

YOU MISSIN THE POINT BRO. ITS ABOUT STYLE WHO CARES ABOUT FUCKING SPEED UNLESS U ARE A U TUBE WARRIOR. ANYONE WHO CAN AFFORD A EXOTIC CAR CAN >IF THEY WANTED TO< AFFORD MORE THAN U COULD TO PUT IN ANYTHING U WANT.
@jeadelmann90
@jeadelmann90 10 жыл бұрын
You have a good point there... obviously if money were not an issue then yeah... you could buy a LaFerrari and twin turbo charge it... but the point still remains that for the same money you could put it into a car that cost less and get more for your money... Too it would be a little harder to tune the viper than an ls powered car... heck they probably weigh the same... also viper owners have the unsavory image of being douche bags with small penises... besides there's a certain joy to be had with blowing away some snob in a over priced under powered exotic... For what Ferrari and Lamborghini charge you can make a much better car that would have far more usable power... again a late model ls power car could stomp the hell out of most if not all of the hyper exotic cars... and again they're light, cheap and incredibly easy to tune... and for much less... Hate to say it... but with the exotics you're buying the name and ripped off on the performance front... 600 hp doesn't require 400k... try a couple thousand dollars on top of the 10-15k for an F-body... a 2002 Ws6 can be tuned to in excess of 1000hp... and then there's the plug and play drop-in crate motors from GM... you're choice of Ls2-3-6-7-9-X-Q power plants... that doesn't even factor in all of the after market support... Ford Mustangs are also another good starting platform for raw power... case in point these exotic cars as handsome as they are really a rip off and boast power and handing that can be matched and massively exceeded in most of the performance paradigms that their manufacturers proclaim dominance. Of course I have the mind of a hot rodder and I certainly do not represent the majority...

Subscribed! Great review I loved the sound of the exhaust in this Stang. 68grand though ... Kind of steep I understand that it might be "Custom" with a couple of signatures but... Damn.. You could get a couple of fully loaded vehicles that are speedy for that type of money.. But its ultimately up to the buyer is they want a "one of kind" go for it... If not there are PLENTY of other options. Personally I'd love to have this bad boy in my garage.

You're better off getting the GT500 just for the sole reason of not having to deal with that cheap Chinese M82 transmission in the Roush, and you get a properly built and forged engine.

tazaxx21 Isn't the "Aluminator" option hugely expensive?
@tazaxx21
@tazaxx21 8 жыл бұрын
+William Stewart True. I think it's quite a bit more. Maybe $6K? However the 5.0 easily handles the extra 150 or so HP on the standard RS3 Roush. The Aluminator will handle way more than that.

I'm happy with my soon to be nonstock 2012 GT. Best car I've ever owned for little over 1/3 the price. Granted I could dump 12 grand in it to catch up but I plan to open a shop in a few years so the joy of researching goes a long way with me.

0:40 Especially when you don't change the suspension,,, "cough, cough" Shelby GT500
@nastang87xx
@nastang87xx 10 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure this idea comes from Top Gear's review of the GT500 some several years ago and this is absolutely not true. The suspensions between the base, GT, Boss, and GT500 are all different. There's a few parts that are shared but not many. The panhard rod is shared. The rear lower control arms in the back are shared between the GT with the Brembo Brake and Track Package ONLY, the Boss, and GT500. The spring rates are all different. The shocks and dampers are all different. The strut mounts are also not shared between the GT500 and all the other models. So yes, there is a difference. Is it enough? No. But it is most certainly "changed."
@pbfloyd13
@pbfloyd13 10 жыл бұрын
Well when you give a car an extra 200 bhp (or 150 bhp in certain cases) suspension should be completely revised.
@2013FiveOh
@2013FiveOh 10 жыл бұрын
pbfloyd13 What is your idea of a "completely revised suspension" then? Because as he just said....the GT500's shocks/dampers/spring rates are unique to the GT500; not to mention that on said suspension, it went 7:39 around the nordschleife, quicker than many over-priced and hyped-up IRS cars, even quicker than the Ford GT supercar did ten years ago, quicker than the first year or two of C6 Z06's as well.

Corey Alfredson what? Audi's are better cars, they turn better they ride better they have more luxury, and they all haul ass hence AUDI Accelerates under Demonic Influence. The $70k 2014 Audi RS5 does 0-60 in 3.9 secs opposed to the Stage 3's 4.0 secs.. the stage 3 has 575HP/570 ft lbs the RS5 has 450/317... think of that, it's quicker with less power and less displacement and no supercharger... 4.2L vs 5.0L blown...
@jaratt85
@jaratt85 10 жыл бұрын
Corey Alfredson like I said you can do so much more with so much less. the Audi will get better mileage, last longer because the engine isn't being stressed by the boost and it still sounds good with that audi v8.. I'm not saying either is better I just think you get a better built car and more car for your money with the Audi, that's my opinion like it or not I have the right to it.

@jaratt85
@jaratt85 10 жыл бұрын
Corey Alfredson I think the biggest argument you can throw is that the Audi out performs it stock and the mustang is highly tuned.. now what would the audi be like with a twin turbo kit, exhaust and intake thrown at it? tho I'm honestly not a big fan of turbos, they tend to make every engine sound the same.

Spot on review Matt! When I was getting my boss serviced at the ford dealership they had a used 2012 stage 3 roush they were trying to get me to trade my boss in for. The BIGGEST issue i had with it were the seats!! No way i could go from the awesome recaro's to those...no matter how cheap the roush was! If someone really wants one, just buy a used one! Their value drops almost in half when they are driven off the lot!

Not gunna lie, i'm not a fan of GM. I don't agree with their business practices, I think the majority of their cars are absolute shit, and overpriced shit at that, and I despise the Gen5. But I've always appreciated the vettes. I could never own one though, not where I live anyway. I scrape my driveway half the time in a 5.0 Mustang that isn't even lowered.

They've had some pretty good cars over the last 20 yrs... Syclone, 90-95 Zr1, 4th gen Camaro and Firebird and the C4, C6 and C7 corvette. Their Ls series of small blocks are pretty awesome as well. Tons of modification support and theres alot to be said for keeping the cam in the block... I do agree with you on the 5th gen Camaro. The car is hideous and it has incredibly terrible visibility. Also the interior is ridiculous... I personally do not care for the whole retro thing and to be honest its running a bit long in the tooth...
@2013FiveOh
@2013FiveOh 10 жыл бұрын
I love the retro thing, it's just that I think GM completely missed the mark, and made the Camaro look a hell of a lot faster than it actually is. It's like a body builder who's muscles are huge, but he can't lift as much as the oil rig worker next door. You know?
@Dogboy1960

2013FiveOh The real problem with the Camao today is found in it's massive weight. The styling is subjective. I don't like it either. But "Looks faster than it is"? Hey, I own a '14 GT and LOVE the Coyote motor.......and the car, to my eye, is just far better looking than the Camaro today. That said though......next year's Mustang is going to be IRS and that's an overdue change the Camaro got in '09. I like my new Mustang but even at "just" 420HP the car is very clearly showing the limitations of a live axl set up. Not sure I go so far as to call the Camaro "not fast"........ the new Z28 posted a CRAZY FAST Nuremberg ring track lap. The potential is in the car even if the stock SS comes up a little short. Since 2009 for Camaro and 2010 for Mustang.... 400HP + is the new "base line" for V8 Pony cars........platforms like the Camaro and soon to come Mustang with IRS are pretty much a MUST HAVE for a street car. The live axl is dangerous in inexperienced hands at these new higher power levels.
