Joel, I have watched your videos off and on for many years. Your videos don't typically pop up in my feed so I'm telling YT to notify me when you post a new video. I hadn't watched you for a while but The Secret Cabal mentioned you recently so I wanted to see what you have been up to and I'm SO glad I did. I love listening to you talk about games. You have a wonderful way of expressing your passion for games that is almost poetic. Thank you for doing what you do. God bless you, man!

Completely agree with you about Oathsworn and Descent. Oathsworn is an amazing experience, a bit like a movie, when a great movie comes out (that’s 3 hours long) and wins lots of Oscars. You watch it and think “wow that was amazing!”, but then don’t need to watch it again… at least not for 10 years… so hard to score these types of games 👍

Great video as always! I really need to try GWT and Brass B., even if I'm not the biggest Euro fan (I do enjoy them but tend to lean more thematic). As for Oathsworn, my copy is on the shelf waiting to be painted. I think what will (hopefully) keep it around for me after the campaign is the ease of redoing a battle, plus the various non-campaign options; like the iron man boss rush. We'll see how I feel after we finally complete the game though.

I could not agree more: Ankh is really a fascinating game which is outstanding with its mechanics. Especially if you take the merge mechanic into your strategy, it is sooooo cool and makes it so more interessting and fun! But also the equal cards that can be played and the slight asymmetry is so well designed! Excellent game!
@MrTomlette

Yeah, Ankh is great. Rising Sun never clicked with me, but Ankh is neck and neck with Blood Rage for me, in some aspects it's probably better just because it's less frontloaded with decisions.

I played Airlines Europe again recently and It felt aged to me. I found both Pan Am and a newer title called Air Mail to be more interesting. This newer one didn’t have stocks, but the route building and domino mechanisms is super interesting

Great list, thanks for the videos! Not sure you’ve seen the games in target, and Barnes & Noble’s lately but some are a lot heavier than Airlines Europe. Especially in Barnes and Nobles. Target has jaws of the lion, terraforming mars etc. Barnes & Noble‘s has a very large selection of modern boardgames. Now Walmart is another matter.

Great list. Joel, why do you prefer Pax Pamir 2d over 1st? As much as I like Ankh and Rising Sun, Lang has not surpassed his work on Chaos in the Old World… the perfect meld of asymmetric powers and thematic integration (particularly in the victory conditions). One has to play with 4 though.

I probably spend more time with AoS than any other game system... But I can't help but wish that they'd sit down, analyze how FFG handles their User Experience and just ape it. I mean, having condense easy to use warscrolls and a better manual would help out so much. lol
@DriveThruReview

Amen. If Star Wars or Marvel "turned me on" as much as AoS, I'd be living over there I'm sure. To be fair though, no one can do narrative like AoS for that scale of game (except arguable some games on the next video) ;)

Is it fair to discount a game like Oathsworn or Pandemic legacy because you won't replay them again if they gave you that much content up front? Have you played all the other games on your list at least 12 times each? (or even more plays in Oathsworn's case)
@DriveThruReview
@DriveThruReview Жыл бұрын
Most of the games I have played more than 12 times. I'll talk more about this in the final video (and link to another video with some more in depth on "quality" vs "favorite"). I also touched on this briefly in the first video in the series. But, to me there are different metrics at play here. I don't want to spoil the last video, but Pandemic: Legacy is an alternative to one of the games in that video. There are different ways to stack games against each other: sales, BGG ranking, personal taste, and (arguably) objective quality. This list isn't objective quality. It's my personal favorites. If I'm, in a sense, never going to play a game again... it doesn't make the list. That might not be the same for everyone making such a list. But, my personality, is not to hold a candle for very many things... for too long. It's murky.

Hey Joel, I fully agree with your comments around competitive play in AoS. You also mentioned that you don’t like 40K, is that because of the setting or is it the rules?
@DriveThruReview
@DriveThruReview Жыл бұрын
The setting and lore I enjoy. I have Necromunda a bit further down the list (my favorite way to "40k"). But, as far as the standard tabletop army game, anytime I have played 40k and then went back and played AoS... at least for me... it's just a much better all around experience. I'm one of those nuts that enjoys the priority roll and the more melee-slanted focus of AoS. Having masses of troops just blasting each other (for the most part) just doesn't engage me like it does in skirmish games (like Necromunda, Stargrave, etc...)
@ashforbes4666

I definitely think that a 10/10 game that only lasts 20 hours and then you don’t play it again should be mentioned. Now if that’s better than a 9/10 game that you play for 50 hours, I don’t know. Have you even played some of these other games more hours than you’ve played these 10/10 one shot experiences? Do dollars spent per hour of entertainment come into play? Most video games don’t really get played again. But most board games do. Would you re-watch a 10/10 movie? Maybe rarely? Maybe if you really wanted to understand the full extent of the plot like Tenet or something? Or if you just enjoy the feelings / world of the movie? Just some thoughts…
@DriveThruReview
@DriveThruReview Жыл бұрын
Those are all great thoughts. I think where I landed was that it's a different metric. Take games sold as a metric for example. Ticket to Ride is in a ton more homes than something like Brass: Birmingham (the #1 game on BGG currently). It's really hard to compare those games against each other if you're using two different metrics to rank them. Instead, you'd have to place them in one metric and compare them... and then place them in the other metric and compare them there. They each win in that case... They win different competitions though. But, I get what you're saying :)

Joel, why don't you like Warhammer 40k? I was surprised, since AoS is so high on your lists and these 2 games are very similar. So what about 40k makes you dislike it? Is about some rules, or is it the setting/lore?
