I just had my first driving lesson with a lory and it was a manual..I've driven manual cars all my life, but that is a different kind of manual 🤣 after the first hour I was sweating like crazy 😂

hows the lessons going? did you do your test yet?
@mchipelo2 жыл бұрын
@@notgandalf1371 Yeah, I've done it back in May and will be soon doing the C+E on the same lorry + trailer attached to it. After a while you get used to the gear box and the constant gear shifting :)

Back in the day we had a lovely gearbox called the Eaton twin splitter, lovely box, only needed clutch for pulling away from a stop, changing gear was done by a quick dab on the floor positioned exhaust brake, went in like a hot knife in warm butter

+Piner5074 heard about that one. Hopefully i'll get the chance to give it a go one day

New breed of drivers coming out of these training schools these days,I can’t believe the amount of drivers that come from agency’s and have no idea on how to use the most basic manual boxes. I’m now 35 and did my class 1 with a Eaton Twin splitter,my instructor said if you can drive one of these you will be able to drive anything. It’s also very costly for the haulage companies who end up with lads who have only driven autos,they damage boxes by making bad gear selections and also loose vital engine breaking due to coasting while try to find a gear,not to mention the danger to other road users while they take there eyes off the road to keep looking where the next gear is or if there gear switches are where they need to be. If you pass your test on a auto HGV you should not be aloud on a manual the same as a car driver!

Philip Roberts at one firm i was with. Driving 18t. Multidrop work a driver from another depot came to cover for the day. Said he couldnt drive the lorry as it was a 1-6 manual and he only drive auto. TM wasnt impressed as he had a manual car licence. Needless to say he didnt last long
@philiproberts69476 жыл бұрын
Scott Andrews I know manual are dying out and slowly been replaced by autos but there are still thousands of them on the roads but the amount of drivers I have some across who don’t know how to anything other than auto is ridiculous! Merc don’t even supply manual box’s any more as standard,it’s an optional extra!!!

This was really good to see today. Passed my test in an automatic and my first driving assessment for a company was in a manual which I found difficult to shift. It felt more like a driving lesson, the actual driving element was fine but I really struggled. I drive a manual car but I felt I needed time to get used to the gears

I started in 1991 in a Volvo F7 with a 4/4 8 speed box which was a lovely slick box to use. In those days, Volvo had the best synchro Trannies out there. I think it went down hill after with the FH/FM as the shift load became very heavy and many drivers complained of achy shoulders when driving them, that was, until you grew the well known 'VOLVO shoulder muscle' after being on them for a while! After I had an MAN F2000 with the Eaton Twin Splitter which was great too, but very different to the Volvo synchro. Both great trucks from another age now..Scania still the best I reckon..Great vid again.

Looks daunting and fun at the same time! I passed my class 2 in 2008 and really wish I'd followed up with class 1 now. I couldn't find any full time work and I still have no experience. I can't leave my full time perm job to do agency work. Bit of a catch 22 situation. Sitting ADR next week and see what happens after that. All the best to you
@ScottAndrews6 жыл бұрын
+JP C Thanks buddy! This was probably more fun for me as i'm used to driving class1 auto's. I can imagine as a newly passed driver trying to think about everything at once it would be quite stressful. Lol If it's something you really want to do then go for it! Maybe ask for an agency shift every other weekend?
@JP5isalive6 жыл бұрын
Scott Andrews Thanks for your reply. I see my kids on a sat and work mon-fri at present. Been there, done that with being let down by agencies. I saw your vid where they rang you at half 9 on a sunday cancelling work. I can't work like that. I need reliable structure. I've been offered a job with Arriva so that's a step on the ladder and will gain experience. Keep up the good work, enjoying your vids! JP0

Wish we still had manuals driving milk tankers. Need that clutch control in the winter. Autos are shit when traction is an issue. The daf 4 over 4 with a splitter was a nice box to use. Scania 3 over 3. Now that was a challenge to get used to.
@ScottAndrews6 жыл бұрын
Assume milk tankers get alot of farm work? Never had a 3over3 can imagine it taking some time to get used to.
@flippinfinsaquatics6 жыл бұрын
Scott Andrews I work on farm collection so collect it from farms and take it to the dairy for processing. 3over 3 was weird. 1st into 2nd as normal then across to third and that's it. Back over to 4th/1st. The gearbox is like a triangle configuration. And the range change and splitter were the opposite way round to the Daf. Jumping from one to the other was a proper brain ache.

Scalia 3 over 3 is the best box about, the crash boxes were the worst

Hi Scott, move your switch before you move the stick. If you don't you'll be waiting for the air to shift.
@sircortgodfrey38706 жыл бұрын
when you struggle to get it into 5th, you need to pass through neutral on the way to 5th. basically just go from 4th into neutral as if you were stopping, don't lift the clutch, keep it there for a fraction of a second and then go up into 5th, it'll go straight in then.
@ScottAndrews6 жыл бұрын
+Shane Bradwell thanks for the tip :)
@WilliamStevens0076 жыл бұрын
If its anything like the daf I learned on, the Range change between 4th and 5th it would balk if you flicked the switch whilst changing gear, So used to drop the switch in neutral then clutch again to put into 5th. So in essence double clutch.
@johnobrien22076 жыл бұрын
The Daf don t like going from 4 to 5 when there cold .Give them time .Don t start horsing the gear lever .

@TheThejpmshow5 жыл бұрын
chubbybrown4real Nope, you can do it in an automatic as long as the car licence you have is manual. If you can use a gearbox in a car you can in a HGV, at least that’s the view of the DVSA

@@TheThejpmshow my friend take his test in a automatic and he can only drive that as is say only auto on his licence

A manual box makes a far better truck. If you're in heavy traffic a lot I can see the appeal of an auto, but I'd rather have a stick any day.
@tamberp6 жыл бұрын
That looks pretty nice for a shunter! Ours is a well-abused 54-plate CF85 *automatic*, which is totally the right truck to use for shunting in confined spaces. (Not!) Press the pedal, watch the revs climb well into the green before it drops the clutch and sets you hurtling back at breakneck speed. Oh, for a clutch pedal... :(
@ScottAndrews6 жыл бұрын
+Jim P Think this one has only been maintained so well cause it's still used as the backup truck. Still got a few things wrong with it though. The fuel gauge for one. First time i've heard of an automatic being used as a shunter. Can imagine the pain of that thing
@tamberp6 жыл бұрын
Scott Andrews It's definitely an experience. As is any time it gets trade plates slung on it to haul a trailer out somewhere... No tax, no MOT, tank full of red, bits a-flappin', and it's painted obnoxious "STOP ME" gold. Looks like the pikeys have turned up, whenever it goes somewhere. 😂
@tamberp6 жыл бұрын
Scott Andrews Plus, the only reason it's our shunter, is because it's the only unit we have; and we only have it because one of our customers (we're a bodybuilder/repair shop) didn't want to pay a bill, and an arrangement was come to. 😁 It beats moving trailers with a forklift, tho, by a long shot.
