Filmed on Sunday, Feb. 26 2023, I drive around the village of Jacksonville, Illinois to see what's happening.
Jacksonville is a city in Morgan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,446 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morgan County. It is home to Illinois College, Illinois School for the Deaf, and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. Jacksonville is the principal city of the Jacksonville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Morgan and Scott counties.
Jacksonville was established by European Americans on a 160-acre tract of land in the center of Morgan County in 1825, two years after the county was founded. The founders of Jacksonville, Illinois were settlers from New England. These people were "Yankee" settlers, that is to say they were descended from the English Puritans who settled New England in the 1600s. They were part of a wave of New England farmers who headed west into what was then the wilds of the Northwest Territory during the early 1800s. Most of them arrived as a result of the completion of the Erie Canal and the end of the Black Hawk War. The Yankee migration to Illinois was a result of several factors, one of which was the overpopulation of New England.
Jacksonville is the home of the Eli Bridge Company, manufacturer of Ferris wheels and other amusement rides such as the Scrambler. W.E. Sullivan founded the firm with the introduction of his first portable "Big Eli" Wheel on the Jacksonville Square on May 23, 1900. Jacksonville was once home to the J. Capps & Son Company, one of the largest manufacturers of textiles and clothing in the United States, and owned by the Capps family, which was intermarried with the family of Jacob Bunn and John Whitfield Bunn of Springfield, Illinois, and Chicago.
Reynolds Group Holdings (formerly Mobil Plastics, Tenneco, Pactiv) and Nestlé Beverage Co. have facilities in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville is home to one private four-year college, Illinois College. Illinois College is the second oldest college in Illinois, founded in 1829 (and the first to grant a degree - 1835) by one of the famous Yale Bands-students from Yale College who traveled westward to found new colleges. It briefly served as the state's first medical school from 1843 to 1848, and became co-educational in 1903. Beecher Hall, the first college building erected in Illinois, is named after its first president, Edward Beecher, brother to Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Jacksonville was also the home of the now-closed private four-year college, MacMurray College from 1846 to 2020.
Jacksonville is also home to three state-run institutions, including the Illinois School for the Deaf, the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, and the Jacksonville Correctional Center. Lincoln Land Community College's Western Region Education Center is also located in Jacksonville.
In 2005, Sufjan Stevens released Illinois, a concept album making reference to various people and places associated with the state. Its fifth track, "Jacksonville," refers to various landmarks in the town, such as Nichols Park. It also contains a story about A. W. Jackson, a "colored preacher" urban legend supposes the town is named after, as well as President Andrew Jackson (President from 1829 to 1837) after whom the town's officials say it is actually named.
The Grammy-winning album Stones in the Road by singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter features the song "John Doe #24" that describes a series of events that occurred in Jacksonville relating to the person on whose life the song is based. The song tells the story of a blind and deaf man who was found wandering the streets in Jacksonville in 1945. The man was hospitalized for diabetes and kept in various institutions until he died nearly 50 years later in 1993.
Cultural offerings include the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Theatre Guild, the Art Association of Jacksonville and its David Strawn Art Gallery, as well as many public events and activities hosted by MacMurray College and Illinois College. Recent additions to the cultural scene include the Imagine Foundation and the Eclectic art gallery, both located in the city's downtown. The Jacksonville Area Museum, located just outside the downtown area, is home to many historical artifacts and is the repository of the MacMurray College Archive collection.
Jacksonville also holds the unusual distinction of having a large number of pipe organs for a city of its size - eleven in all - found at various local churches, as well as both of its four-year colleges. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Lived there from1980 to 1987. Moved after my sophmore year in high school. Downtown looks like it hasn't changed much though I seem to remember you were not able to drive completely around the square back then. Seeing the Illinois theater brought back a lot of memories and you can briefly see the old Times theater (now called Krush Time I guess) just off to the right at 13:49 as well. Everything looks a little more run down than I remember too but it's also been over 30 years so I'm a bit more run down myself. Amazed that I was able to pick out several other familiar landmarks after all this time as well. Thanks for the drive down memory lane.

@@keyshiawashington7977honestly, except for a few places in the Pacific North West where a lot of "neo-nazis" and Aryan Brotherhood types are and a small select few places in the middle of nowheres in the south, there's not a lot of places these days where black people won't be welcomed with open arms, or at least treated differently than other races. I grew up in North Georgia in a little place called Forsyth County (the towns name is, and I wish I was joking, "Cumming" lol) and Forsyth County was known for a long time as THE most racist place in the country. We (or should I say they) forced out all the black people/families after a bunch of lynchings happened in the early 1900s when a man who happened to be black murdered a young white girl (though its not clear if he was truly guilty) and this also rejuvenated the KKK. They even literally kicked out Oprah Winfrey from the county lines in the 80s when she tried to march there in the streets for civil rights, and when I was born (1992) there were only 2 black families in the entire county of tens of thousands. Nowadays, it's a lot wealthier, less hick, MUCH more welcoming to black people, and has a much larger black population. You'd be perfectly fine walking the streets and what not after dark, no one would ever call you the N word, and so on. Just goes to show how much the times have been a-changin.

Would have been good if there was commentary or a ticker that said what streets you were on. I lived in Jacksonville in my teens and would have liked to know where you were at. Couldnt read street signs and the only thing i recognized was the downtown square.

Visited on an exchange program w/ Jacksonville High School about 1996 (or was it 1995?). It formed my idea of a rural US small town in the corn belt. The whole town knew when we, the German exchange students, were in town as we all were driving around on our host families' bicycles, which - at that time, too - about nobody else did. I don't remember the shiny sidewalks that are now present in the video, but it might just be other parts of town than we frequented back then. We were 15/16/17 at that time and for us Europeans, the scarce availability of alcohol and tobacco was a point of small grief :-) On sundays, when our host families were off to church, they allowed us (thinking it would be rude to encourage us to go to churches of other protestant confessions, which it certainly wouldn't have be, but we did play along happily) to go to the public 9 hole golf course instead, which was great fun for us amateurs to teach ourselves to golf. I've never eaten so many variants of heavily sugared food ever since I've been there 🙂

Nice commentary. I believe Capitol Records had a plant produced vinyl records here also in the 60s and 70s. The Jacksonville Bowl is a great place to watch a basketball game.

Whats funny is that the only reason I'm here and even knew that this place existed is because I was just listening to my Bob Seger record (Night Moves) and I noticed on the back in small letters that the album was produced in Jacksonville, Illinois. And I was like "wtf there's a Jacksonville, Illinois??"
