I lived in that brick building@ 20:40 for 5 1/2 years. Still beautiful inside. I still live here, and one thing you didn't mention(unless I missed), is the importance of commercial railroad through the town. Those bridges you went over and under were built within the last decade to ease the annoyance of waiting on trains constantly. I really enjoy your videos been to many of the towns

Unusual request. My dad is buried in East Linwood Cemetery and for years been looking for someone to go place some artificial flowers every June 6 in honor of the D Day Invasion. He was on the first wave at Omaha Beach. Unfortunately his Sherman Prop Drive Tank sunk. Yeah, he made it there and nearly through the war. Got shot by a strafing Foxwulf plane in March 1945. He died in June 1965 while I was in Basic Training at Ft Polk LA. I will pay for the flowers and small flag each year. And ask a photo be taken. I am a retied Physicist and served in Vietnam. I am now retired and living in Costa Rica. You or anyone interested in doing this much appreciated. I paid a visit there in July 2017. A dime was on his grave stone and had been for tears. A dime is a signal to family someone visited that served with him. A nickle means they knew him, a quarter means they were with him when he died.

@@johnnycreighton29 No last name is not Mago. I use a pseudo name on line. My dad was on the first wave at Omaha Beach. His prop drive Sherman sank. Less than 2 months before the wars end he was shot up by a German Foxwolf. after 3 amputations lost his leg at the hip. He died more than 20 years later while I was in Basic I am making a visa renewal trip to the US in June. I plan on a side trip to Galesburg from Chicago on Amtrak. So maybe we could meet? Just happens the best coffee in the world grows here and the most expensive Starbucks sells. I will bring a bag or two.. Just on the perhaps can you recommend a bank there that does not run credit checks. Been gone from US over 8 years so no credit exists for me. I keep a US mailing address and phone number though Another reason for my trip. My current bank is nothing but problems. My real last name and that of my father is Whisler. His name Arthur William Whisler. of the 645th Tank Battalion (Sherman) Mago in Spanish means Wizard and I am known as El Mago de la Montana (The Wizard on the Mountain) I am a retired Physicist (Applied Nuclear) and have many projects going that amaze the locals. I rent a 7 bed/5 bath house with 4 car garage on 23 acres for $164 a month. Healthy died, exercise, and no stress or crime and take no medications at 73. Still bench press 242 pounds with an arm load of surgical titanium in one arm. Vertical weight is fine but not horizontal as that could pop the screws loose. Good to meet you.

I grew up in Galesburg , from 1977 to 2011 . Finally got out of there . You didn't mention that it is the birth place of Carl Sandburg or a site of one of the Lincoln Douglas debates . There is much history to that town.

There is a tribute to the nurse Mother Bickerdyke, who tended to wounded on the battlefield. The stsue is on the northeast lawn of the old Courthouse building. The corner of Prairie and Simmons? The east west street that goes by the former dormitories of the women students of Knox College.

My Mom owned the bakery and coffee shop on Main st. in the late 70s and early 80s. Lived on Lake Bracken. Really nice place back then.

Those stores in the strip mall were there when the mall was still open. The mall use to have a JC Pennys, Bergners, KMart and Sears as the anchor stores but they all individually pulled out and the mall just died off slowly.

I was born, raised, and married in Galesburg, Il. My wife and I bailed in 1985. The reason for this was, I couldn't make any money in my chosen profession. I still occasionally visit, but parts of the town are so rundown I hardly recognize what I am looking at. It was a great place to grow up in but, they couldn't keep their young people!

Another place I grew up near but never got to see. Thanks for excellent tour and narration. Really appreciate your spot on to the point observations like how newer homes cluster around nearby stores near an Interstate interchange while the original town withers away. It should be obvious but only in retrospect when you rake the time to discuss the why and point it out. I wish you could have seen what I was fortunate to see that being the thriving nature of these places in the early to mid 60s.

Galesburg like so many small towns in the midwest NAFTA killed them the factorys packed up and moved to Mexico for the cheap labor.

@@jackjohnson6063 OMC might have moved to Gillsburg, MS, but when Maytag, Butlers, Briggs, etc shutdown in the early 2000’s is when the entire area went downhill quick. Now the only places in Knox County to make an actual living wage (that doesn’t require a specific specialty like nursing, electrician, lawyer, etc.) is BNSF and IL Dept. of Corrections (Hill Correctional Facility). I’m from Abingdon (unfortunately) and seen it all unfold.

I'm taking about companies that wanted to come to Galesburg, but city leadership made it difficult for them to get what they needed or outright refused to pass various zoning measures. This a done in large part to lobbying and threats from maytag that they would leave if they had to compete to much for wages\employee. Or even smaller companies they ran allowed to leave by not helping because 'we don't need them, we have maytag'.

I spent 4 years at Knox College in the late 90's, and have since lived in large cities throughout the world. I still often think of Galesburg; it had a certain uncomplicated charm that I've never found elsewhere. I feel that with the growing work-from-home culture, a town like Galesburg should think outside-the-box to attract folk working remote jobs, and not only rely on manufacturing. Does the city government have any kind of competent business development group?

This town has seen more growth in the last 5 years than it has the last 2 previous decades. Aside from the mall closing in 2018, a lot of stores and restaurants that had never been started popping up. Including Culver's, 5 Below, Petsmart, Marshall's, McAllisters Deli, Starbucks, Burger King, a 2nd Caseys gas station, and over half a dozen local restaurants that opened. Even a Korean restaurant. Galesburg actually had a thriving downtown and even though we only have a population of 40k. We are the biggest town in Knox County and actually serve as the county seat for 52k people spread across 73 miles.

How about Henry Hill Correctional Center and the old State Research Hospital where my great uncle, Leslie Allensworth, brother to millionaire Rollo Allensworth, was locked away by his own brothers? The staff hosed him with cold water; he died from the abuse. It was all swept under the rug, like so much of what goes on here.

Incidentally, there were German prisoners employed in the construction of a sort of hall or lobby at the entrance or near the administration building of yhe Georgia State Prison near Reidsville, seat of Tattnall County. With my own eyes, I saw the little swastikss the German prisoner work detail set into the walls by the base of the floor. I suppose the gusrdd ir someone in the administration "overlooked" that series of pretty little tiled swastikas. Funny, or just weird? That's where, years later, the Georgia State authorities tried to hide MLK when he was a young civil rights leader, arrested in one of the protests in or near Atlanta. They carried Martin Luther King off under cover of armed guard and attrmpted to make it much more difficult for family, friends, and others, including the press, and they locked him up in the high security blocks, I forget which, but either K, L, or M. I'll try to verify that. Civic lesders gave me a tour of that part of the prison on or around 2004 - 2005, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce or some institution. Video didn't show Old Main and other beautiful street and houses. My daughter graduated Knox College. We visited Galesburg many times, and I love the town and its people. I grew up a half hour east of here on 150 in williamsfield. I attended school I'm galesburg at silas willard, lombard and finally galesburg high school. I've also lived in galesburg a few times but as of now there's nothing left

I wasn't there long, but the downtown area was cute. I grabbed a train there last week. There was an organic grocery, a children's museum, some coffee shops, and one historic building was being renovated. I didn't make it out to the strip malls. I feel like it's a decent sign if you can keep the downtown alive with local businesses. Once everything becomes a strip mall towns kind of lose their magic.

I have never heard of Galesburg, Illinois until I just read a short story by Jack Finney called "I Love Galesburg In The Springtime." It was likely written in the early 1960s, but has to do with the changing of the small, once charming town. The writer creatively uses time travel. It's fun and informative. Anyway, interesting to see the town in your video. Thank you.

It was a great drive around the town, but I wish you would have talked about the history of the town founders, the hospital, the railroad (You didn’t even drive by it), Lake Storey, all the recent work that they’ve invested into the town...the Walmart shopping area is still a rather new area. The old Maytag factory that closed down, Dick Blick...there’s a lot more to the town than an old run down mall and high school.

Yep! I have watched 2 videos of people driving through Galesburg and neither one goes by Lake Storey or Lincoln Park area.. It's very pretty in that area. As a matter of fact all our parks are very nice.. I think Galesburg has grown more then ever the past several yrs. I am completely content living in Galesburg.. Always going to be locals who don't know how to appreciate the town they live in. To many negative people constantly griping about there home town no matter where they live.. But those same people never leave and if they do, they end up coming back!

Not one comment about the Railroads here. There is a very large yard south of town, and more than 100 trains per day pass through Galesburg each day. One railroad serves this area, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, with 7 routes leading out of town. There is a railroad museum that is worth a visit. Sad to see the town lose people and the crime rate increases.

I grew up in Galesburg. I was born in 85 so I remember how it was when I was younger. By the time I was a teenager, it was already quickly turning to trash. Maytag shut down their factories, Butler manufacturing left. Them leaving pretty much cut the legs off of the town and they've been crawling ever since. A few years after that happened, people left Galesburg, poverty went up, and the crime rate went up with it. I can still remember going down the street to stop at a gas station only to get a gun pulled on me. I have gone back a few times over the years but never more than about a week. Just enough to to spend time with my folks and the town is basically on life support. They can't attract ANY new businesses because he's right in what he said in the video about businesses looking at risk factors before setting up shop. If for example, Amazon were to buy out the mall and turn it into one of their warehouses, they'd hire quite a few people. People to work in the warehouse itself, and maybe even people to deliver in the neighboring areas. But, you know people would get fired for doing something stupid like stealing. Eventually, Amazon would have problems finding workers and then they'd pull the plug. It sucks because it used to be a good town. Game over Galesburg

The strip mall in front of the Sandburg Mall has been there for at least the last 30 years. I grew up in the apartment complex on Home Boulevard and as a kid, there was an Eagles grocery store where Dunham's Sports is now. Joann Fabrics and Box Car Express (Formerly Hungry Hobo) have been there for as long as I can remember. I still live here in town and probably will for a long time. You missed some crucial parts about the town though. I think other commenters have summed them up.

I was a student at Bradley University in Peoria in the 1980’s. We visited Galesburg for a weekend and the locals did not like us. They didn’t like Bradley students. I don’t know why.

Fun fact. The BNSF railroad yard in Galesburg is their largest yard, and BNSF is the country's largest freight railroad. Lots of traffic and hundreds flock in to see it and tour the yards for Galesburg Railroad Days in June. If you go to youtube and type in "Galesburg rail cam" youll also find 2 live cams going 24/7/365 located in different parts of the town.

4:54 - That neighborhood used to be considered one of the more "upper crust" areas in Galesburg to live (not that it's bad now). Two of my high school friends lived in that area. Super convenient to the mall when it was a thing. Not all the houses in town are losing value. I'm actually surprised how much my mom's place is worth according to Zillow, Redfin, etc. Should have driven North Broad and through Park Lane Avenue to see the really some of the city's nicest houses. That mall is done for. There's video of the inside on KZfaq. Vandals and leaky roofs have rendered it unsalvageable. Funny, I remember when it was the main draw in town and led to "new development" around it, before WalMart was the main draw. In fact, the strip mall across from the one you mentioned was the original location of WalMart. The stores in the one you mentioned were never in the mall from what I remember (maybe JoAnn Fabrics). Carpetland has been in that strip mall since I was a kid. In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes anyone trying to revive the city makes is thinking Carl Sandburg or the railroad history of the town are going to be tourism draws. Sad fact is, most people outside of Galesburg don't know who Sandburg is and very few people care much about trains.

Thank you for showing this video I see it posted 9/03/2020. Labor Day weekend? This is the town I was born in 1952 grandparents lived at 71 N Chambers from the 1930's until 1981 when my grandmother passed. So sad to see. In summer of 1970 when I had graduated from Knoxville High School I took a summer class at Carl Sandburg Jr College in Intro to Business taught by a Knox College professor of economics who speculated that the town should close off Main ST from Chambers to the Square and put a mini railroad down Main ST for people to get on and off while shopping the main business district and side streets especially since Galesburg was a Rail Hub for C B & Q and Santa FE individual systems then. May have saved downtown.

Never knew Galesburg had a Maytag factory, I knew about Newton, IA. About 30 years ago, I was able to hear the AM 1400 radio station in Galesburg - in Detroit, even though Detroit has an AM 1400 station locally. The transmitter in Galesburg was certainly improperly tuned, allowing me to hear their broadcast on 2800kHz (this is known as a "second harmonic"), though it was very weak.

I live in galesburg currently. While not a great town for jobs, entertainment, etc. Its an ok place to raise kids. I have 3 kids under 10 and have lived here my whole life. It has its ups and downs. More recently like most places it has it has been affected by less jobs, below par education, and bored kids. So you get drugs, crimes, etc. All in all its every other midwest town that hasn't made the leap to big city (like peoria, moline, etc) but isn't tiny either, or extremely rural (dont get me wrong we get our fair share of rural things around here lol). And it wasnt mentioned our railyard for bnsf. It and the prison are the biggest places of you want good work. Theres alot history and good people here! If we could get jobs and good leadership in town I believe it could be a great place to live again! And I honestly believe that with the changes we are seeing in local politics (i.e Jeremy Karlin the new state's attorney and other progressive new leaders) it will bring a lot of new positive things!

couldn't agree more. as a correctional sergeant at Henry Hill i can say this town has provided for me 100X over. yes it has a lot of issues...but it has changed my life for the better. people lose faith at the first sign of struggle. that's called "weakness". this town has TONS of potential. let's focus our energy on what we COULD be instead of what we AREN'T.

Hello I just ran across your channel I like how you do these videos they are put together so well. I had been wanting to move to this area but will be holding off until after seeing if the income tax is changed. I'm now retired and presently Illinois income tax is friendly towards retirees with no income tax on social security, pensions and retirement investment income. If your in that area how about a video on Kewanee and Macomb. Once again a big thank you for the videos.

My family's from Galesburg. I spent most of my summers growing up there. Good video. The way I see it, Galesburg cannot escape the reality that it no longer has any reason to exist. As a small town, sure, it could thrive - but the economic activity is gone. You still have railroads, sure, but that's not bringing tax revenue or tourism in. And the sons and daughters of the people who might have worked at Maytag or a manafacturing firm in the 80s, now they get stuck in a small, depressed town. Crime and drug addiction are almost inevitable results of this bitter economic reality.

My first time visiting Galesburg was last week to catch the train to Denver and back. The downtown area near the station was cute. I liked the organic co-op, and the old buildings. One with blue-green turrets(patina'd copper?) was being renovated. I'm seeing small denim/cotton clothing companies pop up in the USA, and would love to see Galesburg get something like that going.

Have a few questions for any residents, or just anyone that can answer.....where do most people work in Galesburg? What do most people do to earn a living, because the area has obviously been hit hard from outsourcing. And is Galesburg considered a part of the Des Moines metro area, even though it’s in Illinois?

No, we arent considered part of the Des Moines metro area. People here generally commute 30-45 minutes to work at either Farmland Foods in Monmouth, Caterpillar in Peoria, CASE in Burlington, or similar places like Tyson foods, John Deere. Most that work IN the town work in fast food or retail. We have lots of fast food places, nothing spectacular though, we just got a Culvers and Burger King came back. If you want to make more than minimum wage, you more than likely have to commute to someplace that isn't dying. We also get taxed like crazy for every single thing lol. Part of the reason no new businesses want to set up shop, there is no incentive for them to do so. Plus if you want to shop at any decent stores or anything like that you also have to commute, why stay here when everything else is somewhere else. 😬😢

I moved here from CT to teach at the college a few years ago. It seems that people who either don't work for the college or drive 30+ mins to a job elsewhere pretty much work retail jobs in those chain stores/restaurants/gas stations. This place is severely depressed with all that comes with it (the poverty, drugs, crime, etc...). It's a shame because it's a very historic town with one of the best railroad hubs in western IL.

MOST people work at shitty restaurants or slang drugs. Our only real employers are the railroad, bridgeway and a hospital. (the other hospital keeps firing people.) that or people drive like 30 minutes to an hour away. because that seems so logical lol.

Knoxville in the early history, rivalled Galesburg, until the latter got the railroads to cross through the burg, so Galesburg too won the designation of county seat.

@@giannisantoscoy5045 Knoxville was the water stop for steam engine trains, and turned down the railroad due to the St Mary's College at the time, that controlled the politics. So Lake Story was dug and "Log City( only a marker is left just east of Sandburg College) sprang up and later became Galesburg. St Mary's College filled in the lake and only a converted to a house Observatory and the chapel of the church remains of the college.. Knoxville was also the site of the only public hanging in the county..

Moved to Galesburg in 1987 to get married. Worked in a GM packaging factory until 2009. Wife died in 2016. Worked at Cottage Hospital 2009 until the Cottage Massacre of 2024(150 people fired and HHS Medicaid shutdown). Looking to leave.

Go to Nauvoo. That's where Mormons clashed with other settlers. The latter killed one of the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, Joseph Smith. Galesburg is a dead city now nothing besides the rail yard that's keeping it alive at this point. My recommendation to others don't ever move here it's horrible yes the buildings are beautiful due to the architecture however the people who inhabit the city and general area are drug addicts and not to mention people end up murdered quite a bit in galesburg a friend of my moms was murdered a few years ago or so at her home. Can't even leave your houses anymore at night for nighttime walk without being jumped or mugged avoid this town and the surrounding areas.
