You should test e-tron on the autobahn! And check if you are getting power limit while driving with 200km/h+, because audi said that this is autobahn EV :D

at first i was like, damn that thing is thirsty. Went down 20km in range when only 8 km driven. Then from the 9:00 mark it will only re-gen and it goes up again to 300km until the 14:00 mark and it has driven 14 km. only 1 km off when it started. At the end it has driven 34.3km with 284 left. So 318.3 in total. It gained 3km from its 315km range when he started. This thing is a re-gen miracle.

I think it has dynamic and adaptive regen. If you turn cruise control on it decides depending on the radar and distance to front traffic if it should roll or brake with regen. Also if you brake the first part of braking is regen.

headlight washers are also useful in dusty places such as here in South Australia. My car hasn't seen rain in 2 months.

Unlike Tesla the E-Tron has many Drive Mode selections (Off Road, AllRoad, Efficiency, Comfort, Auto, Dinamic, individual) and also Unlike Tesla the E-tron has 3 ESC traction control levels (ON, SPORT, OFF) I think you shoud test them especially now that there is snow: the traction on Audi E-tron normally it's rear wheel drive so I expect that with ESC in Sport it will be more fun to drive, it would also help to not feel the important weight of the car in the curve with the rear more free to move sideway. Or in OffRoad mode with ESC off would be a killer on a ice slope.... all things that are impossible with a Tesla. Other things: the car is for sure thirsty but for more efficincy I think it must not be driven like a Tesla setting a regenerative level and keep it for ever, no, I think it have to sail (coast) every time it's possible and then use the huge regenerative power to brake leaving the acellerator just to reach speed and uphill, so using dynamically the two paddles. Actually you still have lots of testing to do on E-tron.. ;)

I don't get the use of the different modes: dynamic still slower than tesla in sport mode. Efficiency still thirstier than tesla in sport mode, ...

I had to wipe the salt off the headlights here this week -5 F today. Lots of salty schmutz. E-Tron looks like a great car to have for an Audi

On the subject of headlight washers, Teslas should really have them, very useful. My brothers seat Leon has those and he says they are very useful to get all the schmutz away and illuminate the area again. We live in southern germany, not too harsh winters but still some snow and lots of schmutz.

I thought headlight washers were required by law for all headlights that output more than 2000Lm (that would be pretty most Xenon and LED lights), at least here in Scandinavia. How does Tesla get around that?

nice video. i like the dashboard cam. please keep it for future videos for viewers that are detailed or ev geeks. small thing... its "free wheel" or "free wheels" the verb not "free rolling". this is a good debate/test for mixed driving (city, freeway) is free wheel or regen braking more efficient? free wheel equals less energy when cruising and regen less efficient cruise but get power back when stopping. i have free wheel style ebike but wonder if its more or less efficient than ebike with regen. might be different with ev though

Nice Video Series Björn. What is you overall opinon. Stay with Tesla or switch to Audi? Or is the "real Premium - Vorsprung durch Technik" more worth then going with Tesla and the comfortable Supercharger Infrastructrure?

Not sure the auto high beam on the eTron works the same as my Toyota CH-R Hybrid but on mine I just press a switch and its on auto. However the camera system is very smart and detects street lights and turns off the high beam as soon as it sees another car or a street light. Very cool. The only time the Toyota system has been compromised is when I am on a dark road on auto high and the road turns sharply so you cannot see the oncoming traffic. If a car appears around the bend it initially blinds them but quickly shuts off. Auto high beam is one of my favorite safety features :-) But it never ever activates in a town becasue of the street lights. Which makes sense

I could mention the high consumption or the fact that the headlights on main seem lethal to oncoming traffic but the thing that stuck in my mind is how loud the indicator ticker is ! Would drive me crazy in no time at all - as it's such a quiet car it seems excessive ?

It is possible that this is due to the microphone being near the instrument cluster.

Agree that the microphone must be close to the signal sound. I’ve owned 3 Audi’s and the signal sound is just right. Not too low like American cars that you see constantly signaling because they’ve forgotten about the signal light being on and not too loud and cheap sounding like the Japanese imports.

The point is to disable regen during cruise control is to let your feet rest the most. Applying cruise control you are more likely cruising on highway or similar - the more you coast (no regen) the more your feet can rest - same purpose like tempomat. It means a lot mentally if you don't have to use your feet - same why tempomat became so popular... :)

@@bjornnyland Agree - it should be at least like at VW eGolf or eUp! with the function "B" - when you have the most regen: the more you loose the pedal the more it regens till full. Surprised that this function is not there - even being in the same company group...

Well, is there any passing of car from other direction? Some e.g. tunnel with passing other direction car? No extra special situations I found in video... Volvo with Full LED behaves same.

FYI Tesla improved battery cooling in Model 3, and the Performance version adds track mode that does extra cooling in advance. Together these enable the car to do much better on the track than Model S. Overall efficiency of the Audi is disappointing, but otherwise it seems like a very polished SUV. The quiet smooth ride is particularly impressive.

Does the Audi have auto high beam like Kona? I find that a very good feature , you just put on high beam and the car dims it as soon as the camera sees a car coming towards you. Kona also has cornering lights. And how about changing the number of blinks to change lanes from 3-5-7 that is very good also because 3 is most time not enough.

caught myself at idea that I prefer a Bjorns longer video, instead of short clips.. don't know why, it's some kind of meditation :) when You can dive into the process of testing something for a long time, insteat of searching and clicking new clip every 5-10 minutes.. IMHO

Guys, a SUV that looks like a SUV is not aerodynamic. Go buy Ioniq if it really troubles you so much. For instance, I would not buy a diesel SUV precisely because it would cost me simply too much. I drive a small Ibiza. There. Problem of your life solved.

@@ragsupporter I agree. At the end of the movie the consumption is 28.2 Wh/km and Bjorn has been hammering it many times. I'm sure that if the car has been driven without hammering all the time and normal day use the consumption would have been maybe 240 of 250Wh/km consumtion is comparable to the Model X,. I'm sure that driving in S mode consumes more than D mode.

This is where Tesla stand to lose out in a big way. Build quality, wipers, lights, sound deadening, materials quality, fit and finish, etc - all the other makers have a massive head start and they all know how to make an electric motor/battery too.

the low volume of their production would suggest otherwise when it comes to batteries. also the low efficiency tells us another story when it comes to their motor/inverter tech. I'm absolutely positive that the old manufacturers will manage to catch up, but for now Tesla is ahead. Meanwhile Tesla will surely try to catch up on the aspects you mentioned. anyway we are bound to have ever better EVs.

@@ConeRanger5 In house nobody makes more batteries than Tesla. On the other hand most other makers outsource battery manufacture and are building their own plants - it's not a bottleneck as it has been for Tesla even recently. As for being more efficient? Well that depends on how you look at it. Tesla are using a battery chemistry which allows better efficiency. Others aren't and the only real reason is probably a safety one where they see it as too heat unstable. It's not hard to be more efficient if you make cars with less sound proofing and rock hard tyres becasue a lighter car with less rolling resistance is already at a big advantage. There comes a point where the trade off for comfort, noise, quality and so on is required more than overall efficiency. Audi seem to realise this which is why they have things like wipers which work effectively - even though they probably add a little weight and efficiency. In reality I doubt most E-tron buyers will miss the extra 5-10% range but they would certainly hear the road noise and get annoyed at the cheap bits if that were the case. Way back in the 80's a good friend of mine and his team made a golf cart with a solar roof and large battery bank for the ev distance race. It looked like a land speed car, got as hot as the sun inside, was slow and horrible to be in but it did almost 800 miles on it's only charge. It was then disqualified for having the solar panel on the roof but that's another story. The point is it was very efficient and went a very long way. People wouldn't want it though.

I dunno, it is around 20.000€ cheaper than a Tesla Model X, therefore i would argue it does not really compete with that car. Mainly it will compete with the ICE offers of Audi. Especially with their Diesel cars that nobody wants to buy anymore.

I'm sure they will, in germany that becomes untenable, as you cannot drive freely into cities anymore. And as resale value is a big part of a cars cost, Diesel buyers would be in for a very rough ride indeed. And as more and more countries enact similar rules, diesel as a propulsion choice will die. Of course, old diesel cars will be around for quite some time, but new ones? Not very likely. Additionally, most new cars are actually bought by fleet services over here, and those fleet managers want to go electric quite desperately, for a variety of reasons. The currently biggest problem is supply.

Some most probably do. However, statistics from all OEMs as well as the official KBA statistic show that Diesel numbers are falling rapidly in new cars. Of course, as mentioned, the interest for EVs is there, but the supply is not. Therefore some will have to buy what is available, not what they want. Especially those buying cars by the 100s or 1000s.

Soordhin “You cannot drive freely into cities anymore” - Its one road... in one city. VW sold more diesels in 2018 than in 2017. I think most people don’t care, just bought a diesel myself.

Actually, it is much more. That one is just even for Euro 6 diesel, but there are many zones for Euro 5 or lower ones as well, and of course there will be even more, including Berlin considering closing everything inside the S-Bahn ring to Diesel completely (they have to re-think their busses though). Yes, VW has sold more, but is actually an exception, and largely driven by rebates up to 34%. I hope you got that as well, it certainly makes a difference.

Autobahn having lots of road construction, so true. For commuting to work you can´t really use the boost too much because lots of traffic. Fun thing right now, there is a discussion if the autobahn should have a speed limit. 51% voted for a speed limit, 47% against it. Whats your opinion if there was a speed limit?

Secret Name the biggest problem on the autobahn is not really the speed. There are way too many trucks, most deadly accidents happen because of them. They sleep, then there’s traffic and they ride right into it and with that heavy thing it’s really deadly The people drive really responsibly. If the autobahn isn’t completely free it’s not so common that people drive over 180kph.

Perceived loudness is also dependant on frequency of the audio. Human ear naturally isolates different audio frequency ranges at different levels

Interesting, you drove 34 km but the estimated range only went down 31 km.

That's because I was hammering on the highway before I took this trip. GoM at start of the trip was estimating higher consumption. As we drove this slow trip, GoM recalculated for lower consumption.

@@MiccaPhone Yes, they should have been done since september. And to my knowledge the A7 is now 3 lanes all the way from Neumünster down to Hamburg. That's something.

This has so bad efficiency ,you lost 7 km in range just by trying to show some features between the comfort and sport mode. Terrible as a daily and always have to look at the energy in the battery!

range came back later on. It shows how much range would you lose if you drive as you do at the moment.

I think the e-Tron instrument cluster is very busy. Don't really like it. Even the i-Pace instrument cluster didn't look that busy.

A bit unfair to compare how much "Jojo" driving it can take versus a Tesla P100D. Since the Audi has very low power compared to the Tesla. And also way lower top speed. Its no surprice that high power generates more heat. So in order to compare them equal power output and speed has to be used. Put a big shoe under the pedal on the Tesla so it slows down to Audi level :-) Then compare.

I don't know about yalls guys, but for me though, when i see the Audi electric cars, they remind me of Nokia or Motorola smart phones that were made to compete with iPhones. They are products made by a companies with engineers, executives, and bureaucrats that are still stuck in the past.
