Watching the Nirvana live videos, for the chorus, the "boom boom - hey! boom boom - wait!" part, it looks like for the first "boom boom - hey!" Dave just hits the floor, then goes to the floor and rack for "boom boom - wait!", then for the remaining "boom boom - hey! boom boom - wait!" parts of the chorus it looks like Dave hits both the floor and rack tom for each part. What I don't understand is, for the chorus parts where Dave hits both the floor and the rack, the first "boom boom - hey" hits sound higher pitched than the second "boom boom - wait!" part, but confusion here because it looks like he's hitting the same drums, right? Why would the pitch change? Is this just an auditory illusion, or is he hitting the toms closer to the rim on the rack tom for the first "boom boom - hey!" part, then in the middle of the head on the rack tom for the "boom boom - wait!" part? Can't figure this out, but your playing on just the floor for the "boom boom - hey!" part every time, then switching to the floor and rack tom for "boom boom - wait!" definitely sounds right to me, I love it, and it clearly adds that difference in pitch and dynamics between "boom boom - hey! boom boom - wait!", which gives the chorus depth and is so important to the feel of the song. However, this doesn't square with the live clips I've seen with Dave playing. Any thoughts?
