My man. Your kick is incredibly defined. Is that something that comes outta the mix or a tuning thing? I'm about to pick up either a super kick or an Emad but I figure why not. Shoot my shot, what are you rocking for a batter and resonant?

It was ironic I just found this video. I was having this conversation with other drummers a few days ago about how I decided to get back down to basics. Kind of go back and re-learn or remember basics I had forgotten over the years. I could solo at the drop of a dime. But after a while I got into that rut of just whomping out as many notes in some cases as I could. More or less showboating it I guess ya could say even. I finally got agitated because out of the blue during a recording session, I had remembered or suddenly reminded myself that sometimes less is more. Thats how my intentions to start over so to speak came into play. I was in a sort of rut with my fills. I just got back into playing after not getting to for over 10 years. So I actually got excited once it dawned on me that some times that KISS needs to apply and just start over and re-work my groove so to speak. So seeing this video got me extra happy about doing that. You Rock!

Damn! Didn’t know a solo could sound that good using just 8th notes. You opened my mind. I need to practice this. On a side note, I tried an experiment and I switched the video speed to 2.0x when you’re soloing. It sounds amazing! Try it.

I really appreciate musicians that understand that composition is a musical skill, that you don't have to fill every song or solo with a blistering array of notes. Technical ability is certainly a necessary skill, but when that's all that's showcased, when subtleties and change-ups are ignored, it makes for less moving and less than memorable performances. Thanks, Mr. Beatdown.

Never heard a drum solo based on an 8th note subdivision sound so musical. You got that by listening, paying attention and allowing yourself to think and feel music. Many people don't associate that with drums and it's not all their fault. Thanks for teaching drummers how to dispel the myth.

Rob, I’m super excited about your series on soloing. I’ve been playing drums for more than 30 years and have done very little live soloing - ‘wipe out’ when I was a teenager, is about it. However, I practice soloing a lot but I haven’t added much structure to it. I play in a couple of bands now that require me to solo, so this could not come at a better time! Thanks, I’m psyched!

That was a great lesson. I've seen so many drummers online give lessons at 100 miles per hour, So to speak. Lol. And you will hear them say the lesson is for bigginer as well as advanced. Well if you can't tell what they are doing because they play so fast and fly threw the lesson. For me its a little to much. I learn so much faster when the lesson is presented at a slower pace. Especially if your new to what they are teaching. So I'd like to give this lesson a 10. Very easy to understand and comprehend. Leaning to play the drums can be very intimidating for some. I was one of those drummers. As my journey to play drums continued threw the years of course things became easier. But still always a challenge when learning or practicing something new. So in concluding these comments. I'd like to say great job on this bigginer drum solo lesson. I think it was presented very well and easy to understand. Super great job. Thanks.. Lance k. H.

Very orchestral! I can go for hours, some days, playing music on the drums. I also usually record my practice and play sessions on cassette, and listen later with a critical ear. What did I like, or discover? What needs more development? Playing eighth notes like this I think of as my "noodling". Gonna be a great year!!!

Nice to know Weckl isn't the only musical soloist left on earth. Of course I joke, but there are not many melodic, musical soloing drummers on this planet that I can tolerate as far as soloing goes. Rob is a hell of a tasteful drummer and soloer. And that kit sounds perfect. I'd push my mother down for a snare sound like that as well. Hopefully is won't come to that however. Lord knows mom's hips aren't what they used to be. 😝
