They used the name The New Yardbirds to fulfill a contract and made a tour. Keith Moon told them they where going to go down like a led balloon - hence the new name.

Keith Moon threw out that name as a possible band name when Jimmy Page, Moon and I believe Entwhistle ( bassist for The Who) were jamming one day. This was before The Yardbirds broke up. Moon thought the band would go over like a lead ballon….in other words, it would flop. Jimmy asked if he could use the name, and Moon said sure. So when Jimmy formed The New Yardbirds (to fulfill contract obligations for several concerts in Scandinavia) he had in mind to change the name as soon as possible to Led Zeppelin. He thought it was a great name for a band that he wanted to be heavy, yet light……

Those poor kids sitting there, weren’t allowed to make any noise, imagine how hard that was. I’m not sure how early in (1969) this was, I could have been right after their debut album came out in January. They toured for a few gigs that Page had to do as the last remaining Yardbird, the were The New Yardbirds. Their first practice together was on August 19, 1968, they did those gigs & recorded their first album in October. Not sure if you know, they recorded it & Page produced mixed & edited it, all in a few days of a total 36 hours. They played a couple more songs at this radio show, yes it’s cool to see how it really started. Thank you for your reaction.

I graduated HS in 1970. No one I ever saw had hair like that. Not allowed at school. You could not get Led Zeppelin on the radio unless you listened to a distant FM station playing "underground" rock.

I too was in the class of 70 and had a similar experience. You could only get the distant FM station at night. I did however attend their first concert ever in America. It was in Denver in December of 68. They were the warmup act behind Spirit and Vanilla Fudge.

Led Zeppelin played the Texas International Pop Festival in Lewisville, north of Fort Worth and Dallas in August 1969. People who lived there told stories of polite hippies mowing their yards for free, giving them flowers, and singing to their children…. and smoking pot and skinny dipping in Lake Lewisville.

This was filmed at the Danmark Studios, Denmark. Just a few months after they had formed the band. Robert and Bonzo are 20, JPJ is 23, and Jimmy is 25. So young, raw, hungry, and already awesome. The first time they were filmed. To hear, Let me introduce Led Zeppelin…. Wow. I’ve been a fan since 1969. Still listen to them every day. Please play more Led Zeppelin. The early Led Zeppelin is the best in my opinion. They were new, and hungry to get noticed. They were so raw and gritty when they recorded the first two albums in 1969. One of my favorites of the Led Zeppelin music catalogue.

"Mothership" is a 2007 compilation album. Their 1969 debut album is "Led Zeppelin", typically referred to as "Zep 1".

Man, those drum skins are beggin’ for mercy! They were so tight then. Exploded onto the music scene and the ripples are still felt. I saw them live once in Boston. Page did the bow. Years later I worked with a guy who was a huge Zep fan and when I told, he was just like jaw dropped. “You saw him do THE BOW?!?!?” LOL… yep.

I saw Zeppelin so many times back in the 70's and they would play their songs a little different each time, which is why I had to see ever show when they came to town and that was a lot 💖l'm considered a "Led Head"😝🤘🎶

Led Zeppelin were 10 years ahead of everyone else, and still few bands can get anywhere near this. No trickery here kids, no autotune, just sheer off the radar talent.

The set they play here for this show are the best live video performance of Zepplin out there IMO. The sound quality was decent compared to most of the popular videos I've seen out there. The band was in their early prime, tight and played so raw, so real compared to Song Remains the Same.

I was able, by accident as I bought tickets to see Vanilla Fudge and Spirit, to attend their first US concert ever in Dec. of '68. They were trying to promote their first album, which had barely been released, but were having trouble getting a promoter to book them. They were relatively unknown at the time. Finally in a last ditch attempt they convinced the biggest promoter in the Denver area to "gamble" on them at the last minute. He put them on the bill for a concert as the opening act behind Spirit and Vanilla Fudge, who were the headliners. Their name wasn't even on the first posters that came out because they hadn't been added to the roster yet. So when the show started and they were announced as the show began, few people knew what to expect. They came out and blew the doors off. I can still remember them playing this song in much the same way it is played in this video. Everyone was stunned and amazed. It was like WTF did I just witness. It was on this tour that Jon Bohnam met and befriended the drummer from Vanilla Fudge, Carmen Appice. And where the opening sequence for Stairway to Heaven was allegedly copied from a song Randy California, the lead guitarist for Spirit, showed Jimmy Page. And I have to say they do sound hauntingly similar but I digress. Between the three bands, that whole show was really something to behold. But I have to say, Led Zeppelin is the band that sticks out most in my memory after these 56 years.

Re the audience: I think no one had heard of them before in this area, and they were all taking it in. It’s possible they were asked to stay seated for this televised or filmed performance.

I saw Page and Plant live in 1998. They also played “How Many More Times” and Page picked up the violin bow. Like Dazed and Confused, the song comes from Jimmy Page's time with the Yardbirds and was chosen by him for the first Led Zeppelin album.

This was a performance held at a "teen center" and recorded by Danmarks Radio. Because the film was to be broadcast, the kids in the audience were told to "behave with decorum". lol Yeah, they were so young, Plant and Bonham were 20, Jones 22 and Page 24. Such a tight band from the start, and comfortable enough with each other to improvise that early on. Amazingly gifted musicians who were clearly on the same wave-length. Page used a violin bow during a few other songs in addition to this one, "Dazed and Confused", "Whole Lotta Love" and "In the Light". If you watch other live performances, you'll see more of that. Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed it a lot.

This was the first Led Zeppelin song I ever heard, back when it first came out. Was hanging with friends at the lake, a pickup truck rigged with speakers, one of my friends just bought the album on 8 track and this was the first song that started playing, full blast under the stars .Some beers, some 420 action and girls, then this song came on and the heavens parted. I had never heard anything like it before. Will never forget that experience.

If you watch, they were still working out stage cues. Blew a couple, but covered. This, I believe, was very close to the “New Yardbirds” dates, so not too much stage time yet. They are killer, though. I love it. Great bar band! ✌️

I was 10yrs old in 69. I agree, no one like Led Zeppelin x50 plus years for me. Robert Plant vocals are so unique. Still has pretty good vocals now in his 70s. The other 3 so talented. .

The Yardbirds (which featured Jimmy Page for part of their history) uses an early variation this riff way back in 1964, with their cover of Howlin' Wolf's SMOKESTACK LIGHTNING... the best blues song ever written , imho. I went into a record store 'n saw the album displayed on the new release wall. Picked it up, checked out the cover front 'n back 'n decided to take a chance. As it turns out I made a wise decision.

Plant is in my opinion the greatest singer, his range tone & texture is amazing. You should hear their amazing first album, it’s an amazing debut album. Page uses the bow in Dazed & Confused, their movie version of it is mind blowing. If you haven’t heard You Shook Me, it’s a really great song.

Point of info: Zeppelin’s first four albums were untitled: they were just I II, III, and IV. Mothership is a compilation album.

They just jammed from island to island (I know the concept - we used to rehearse 60 mins and then go out and play for 120 - good for adrenaline kicks - will we kill it or just f*ck up?). They had a start, some bits in the middle and an ending. How they got from each part to each part is just a jam, luckily with a few words of text thrown in. There are a few mistakes in this, like missed breaks, but they'd only been together for a few weeks. It got polished up real quick. The jamming gets easier the better you know what the other guys will probably do. JPJ, like most bassists, holds it together in the midst of the chaos. John Entwhistle of The Who did the same. Notice the violin bow feature was done here without the echo used in later years. It would have probably sounded better if Bonzo's kick drum had been miked better - couldn't hear it hardly here. I think the audience was tranquilised.

I think he's playing the "Dragon Tele", originally given to him by Jeff Beck after Page recommended Beck for the Yardbirds guitar position. Clapton had recommended Page when he left to join John Mayall, but Page was still satisfied being a studio musician at the time, so he suggested his old teenage buddy Beck for the job. See Page induct Beck into the R & R H. of Fame. He got the violin bow idea from the father of actor David McCallum (NCIS, Man From Uncle), who was a studio session leader and violinist. In the movie This Is Spinal Tap the guitarist references this by playing the guitar strings with a violin.

You should listen to the studio version also to put it in context. Studio Zepp and live Zepp are both great but different animals. Also need to listen to Dazed and Confused especially live for some serious use of the bow.

Mothership is not their debut album. It's a greatest hits album. Their debut album was Led Zeppelin I.

This was a young studio audience for a TV program…so they were”well behaved”. They were also stunned ducks: nobody had heard music like this before…they didn’t know what to think. Nobody sounded like Zeppelin when they came out……..they were heavier than Cream, The Doors……that young audience was gobsmacked. this is the earliest video of Zeppelin…….Plant was barely 20…..he looks so damn young here….you can tell that the band had not quite hit their stride…….but the talent and possibility was evident.
