Yes, his 1983 tour for the album became legendary. It introduced him to a whole new generation of fans worldwide, at least in a live setting, and captured the soul man/show man Bowie in an outstanding way. He looked supremely confident on stage at the time.

We had our bars, but our clubs were Dance Clubs. Everyone danced in the late 70’s and then again in the late 80’s. We drank, we danced, we made friends, we had damn fine fun. Bowie’s moon is in Aquarius, hence his cool mystique. 😁💖

One of the Anthems of the 80’s, baby. It was a good time in this country. Everybody was happy and loved everyone. Radio version WAY shorter than the Club version. We would stop in our tracks, sit our drinks down and run to the dance floor to shake it. He was way older than his current radio hitters and just he slipped right into the vibe of the time. Chameleon… What a great flashback for me…❤

@@Vader1138 I saw a concert with him streamed from Montreux last year - the very same festival where Bowie famously spotted the unknown Stevie Ray Vaughan at a controversial show in 1982, and immediately realized the huge raw talent of the guy. Yes, Nile is indestructible and still swinging.

Yes, Stevie was definitely one of the standout features of the album - his angular, dramatic guitar solos gave it a special flavour. Nile Rodgers loved him too, and actually gave the eulogy at Stevie's funeral after his untimely death seven years later. his guitar solos on "China Girl" are just as powerful as here but in a different vein... Stevie was scheduled to be on the tour for the album of course, but was dropped by Bowie's team just a few days before they were due to start. The reasons are still discussed to this day, his heavy drug use and generally flamboyant rock'n'roll lifestyle was probably part of it - Bowie wanted his comeback tour to be a clean affair, without scandals - but SRV and his team are also rumoured to have asked to give him and his band the steady spot as support act on the entire tour which would have sounded like too much, after all it was a David Bowie tour.

This is what it sounded like during the rehearsals for the 1983 tour. In Dallas, around April 1983, with SRV still in the band (and Carlos Alomar on rhythm guitar). Always cracks me up that people at the time thought Bowie had "sold out" or something by doing a dance track. Like they completely forgot about "Fame", a previous #1 hit that was such a big dance song that he performed it on Soul Train. (And of course the funk/disco single "Golden Years" from his next album made the top 10).

Oh yes! :) The entire album was laced with musical references to the 50s and 60s though the music he had grown up with - nor least in the brass parts.

I was on a dancefloor at a club when the DJ put this on - I had not heard it yet as the album was just released ( I have been a Bowie Fanatic since 1975) but I recognized the voice - The song Packed the Dancefloor

Two unique things about this is, the rhythm guitar asked for a little echo and the engineer accidently left the gain up. He was going to "fix" it and somebody said hell no leave it. The other thing is Bowie asked Stevie Ray to go on tour with him, and Stevie turned him down.. the rest, as they say, is history.

He turned it down because he and Double Trouble were supposed to open for Bowie, and Stevie was supposed to play with Bowie as well, but Bowie's people refused to pay him for doing both. He was performing twice and paid once, so said 'no thanks'. I don't blame him.

Well, Nile was present already when they did demos for the album at David's home in Switzerland, along with Turkish bassist and multi-instrumentalist Erdal Kizilcay. They tried out various ideas and grooves, both more jazzy ones and the kind of disco/funk rhythms that made it to the final recording of the song. All three of them had heard people like Jaco Pastorius and Derek Forbes (of Simple Minds) and were impressed by them, but they decided that wasn't quite the kind of bass sound they wanted for a Bowie album. :)

well....in that 1982, Bowie had signed the largest record contract in history with EMI and let's say that he wanted to justify that large sum of money he received......also, at the beginning of the 80s, a new musical era opened and after his most experimental era, Bowie wanted a certain more commercial impulse to reach a whole new generation.

That's Omar Hakim on drums, same guy who played with Stevie on the Tightrope live video you reviewed a few weeks ago. I wouldn't be surprised if This recording made that possible, since Omar has such a positive vibe with folks.

In 1982 Bowie was ALREADY, along with the Rolling Stones, the greatest Rock Icon alive, but this album took his Fame to another level: 3 World Big Hits (Lets Dance, China Girl and Modern Love), packed stadiums on all 5 continents... ......Modern Love and Criminal World are my favorites from this album

Yes, your thought on what SRV's guitar added was spot on, and yes, it was like Bowie walked into a blues bar. But, the driver of the piece, other than the bass, was that rhythm guitar.

David Bowie happened to go to Montreux Jazz Festival 1982 in Europe and he heard SRV and Double Trouble killing it on stage. You should watch that whole SRV set, it is fire. Unfortunately some of the people were mad that SRV was playing blues and some idiots booed them. Bowie sought SRV out after the set 13:36 and asked to play on guitar on his new album. When SRV went back to Montreux Festival in 85 the crowd was wild and Stevie gave them quite the show, it was fantastic. Stevie declined to join Bowie permanently and kept to Double Trouble and the rest is history😮

This album was produced by Nile Rodgers from "Chic" who also plays guitar throughout most of this song. Omar Hakim is drumming, Tony Thompson played on some other tracks on this album and also was drummer with "Chic", but Omar Hakim also drummed with "Chic" on some tours and Omar was also the drummer on most of the "Brothers in arms" album by Dire Straits.

Last time I saw him was at the New Orleans Superdome and he did that song. I had front row seats and I was soooooo excited!!!! When I got there I was in the front of what seemed like 40 feet high by 40 feet wide speakers and couldn't see a thing ;-( A friend that had a suite sent someone down to get me. The luxury was nice but the band looked like they were 1" tall ;-((((

I'm going to cheat and comment early. please consider doing some Annie Lennox. Her writing partner Dave Stewart (guitarist) did very interesting production touches, and I feel like you would hear them well. So many reactors dont notice as much stuff like that, as well. Plus, since it's a deeper cut I dont see any big channel reactions to it. "This City Never Sleeps." I request it on occasion, and people hit the like for my comment... its the album buyers, probably, who are familiar. But give your audience something new from you, that other channels dont offer?? Annie (in The Eurythmics first) is hugely popular. Gorgeous vocals, BIG vocal range. Rich, deep contralto.

I’d say Eurythmics as a band before solo Annie Lennox. Lee has done some Ultravox, so it’s not a big leap 🎉 Eurythmics’ album Be Yourself Tonight was the first cassette I bought with my own money as a teenager. They’ve done some truly amazing work ❤❤❤

I got into Bowie early 90's when "Black Tie, White Noise" came out and that hit hard. I am pretty sure that this was the first of "old" Bowie song that I really liked. It took me years and years before I warmed up to the albums like "Low", "Heroes", "Lodger" or even "Station to Station". Funny how our musical taste changes.

When Let’s Dance first came out, I missed the Starman and didn’t pay much attention to it. I like it now, though, maybe even more because it’s the fuller version. That would be fun to see, Lee - You and your girl and your kids bopping together 🙂 Very cute

We danced to this... this album\extended version was played in the clubs that had the good bands (at least here). The single version would be played in the more pop friendly\top 40 clubs.... but both versions packed the dance floors

Yes, this was his Serious Moonlight Tour. And David Bowie's Auckland show was the largest-ever for a single show concert in either Australia or New Zealand and made it into the Guinness Book of Records as the largest paying crowd per capita anywhere in the world. (1989)

Early 80s Reagan came on the scene, we we're bummed. Women started working out with weights and serious Hindu yoga. New age crystals and channeled spirits from 35k years ago. Don't remember dancing to Bowie though.👍

Hey brother! You are on the right track to good health. Nutrition is your foundation. It holds everything else up. Now, you need to add exercise. That is your key to having more energy. If you're like me, this meme may apply: "I would do anything to lose weight, except exercise." Ha! Well, don't worry about the weight, it will take care of itself. Instead, exercise to be healthy. I recommend non-impact exercise. Brisk walking instead of running. Calisthenics, swimming, bicycle riding, even Tai-Chi. Hell, just climbing stairs a couple times a day is better than nothing. The point is, there are a lot of different ways to exercise. Choose something that you can enjoy, not something you hate or that feels like a chore. Also, don't expect immediate results. It usually takes six months to a year minimum before you're gonna start to feel it. Make small, gradual changes, not big ones. Small changes are easier to live with. The important thing is to continue and not quit. I hope this helps you.

The shorter version actually cut the whole middle instrumental section including some of SRV's guitar solo. The song itself is a little deeper than it might seem. The music itself crosses time periods of big band music from the late '40s bebop, cool jazz and modal jazz a la Miles Davis grounded by straight-up Blues inflections by Stevie Ray to exemplify a swath of eras while the lyrics exhibit two dancers trying to find a place within it in romantic ecstasy aka "serious moonlight". SRV's playing on this always reminds me of how angry he was seeing Bowie wearing white linen gloves in the video and miming playing the guitar. Stevie said, 'That motherf###er shouldn’t be pretending to be playing shit he wasn’t playing!'
