That's definitely Garson on that lengthy piano chaos cascade. David just told him to go for it and improvised the whole thing. He was with Bowie for decades after this.

His half-brother had schizophrenia and seizures. Bowie was concerned it was familial. But the concept comes from reading an Evelyn Waugh novel Vile Bodies

The Aladdin Sane title track features what may be the most incredible piano solo in all of rock music, by Michael Garson. Listen as it leaves the song like a soul leaving the body, takes flight, observes from above and around then gently returns to the song and becomes one with it again. It is absolutely spectacular and amazingly beautiful in its free-form.

To expand one of the comments, Bowie’s half-brother, Terry Jones, was schizophrenic, hence “A Lad Insane” (Aladdin Sane). Bowie always feared he had it, too, and it would eventually claim sanity. Terry killed himself by jumping in front of a train in 1985. For me, it’s an outstanding track; trippy, jazzy, brilliant, tinged with an emotinal ache 😊❤

I will be forever grateful to my mate Steve and his sister Vanessa who came to my party and bought me this album on vinyl plus Pin-Ups for my 18th birthday in 1982. Have enjoyed all the tracks ever since.

Mike Garson played the piano on "Aladdin Sane". He has a channel on youtube. I once commented on one of his videos about how much I loved "Aladdin Sane" and his piano playing and he actually replied and thanked me for appreciating his work! When someone as talented and legendary as Mike Garson takes the time to respond to a fans comment that tells me he's a classy guy that appeciates his audience.

To make things a little more insane, the piano is placed up front and center in the mix, where vocals would usually go. Bowie's voice, meanwhile, occupies the place where rhythm guitar would usually go, and the hypnotic, repetitive rhythm section is placed all the way in the back.

LOVE this album! The personnel on this album (Ronson, Garson) then, David on sax is so strong! Bowie called this album "Ziggy goes to America". A Lad Insane is such a great song. It is a precursor to Diamond Dogs......Future Legend and Halloween Jack (another Bowie character) in the dystopian future. Love to see a reactor appreciate that track....I have loved it since 1973.

Such a wonderful, underappreciated album. Thanks for moving forward with my favorite Bowie. Don't skip Hunky Dory. Even though it's earlier, it's still a magical trio of albums, and usually Bowie changes his style and collaborators more quickly.

The good old times of glam rock, and well, Bowie was one the best (with Marc Bolan's T.Rex, Sweet, Roxy Music, Slade, Mott The Hopple, Sparks and New York Dolls) exponents.

Ned from Spain here for the Bowie classix Lee. Watch That Man is supposedly about New York Dolls frontman David Johansen and the song is very much in the Dolls basic woozy Chuck Berry R n R style. The band on this and Cracked Actor are seriously swaggering without a care in the world. Then they play with elegance and control in Aladin Sane with the incredible Mike Garson's solo mixing in Latin Salsa, George Gershwin, free jazz, avant garde classical...and Mike did it alone in ONE TAKE. If you have the time look for the documentary about Mike it's a mind blower.

Bowie loved the Velvet Underground, and “Aladdin Sane” could nearly be the V.U.’s “The Gift” from ‘White Light/ White Heat’, with the very similar backing track coming out of one speaker and on “The Gift” John Cale, the Velvets’ avant-garde professional piano player, telling a story out of the other channel.

Not as consistent an album as Ziggy but in places it goes weirder and deeper and I love it for that

Mike Garson are phenomenal. He did something similar on Dead Man Walking from the 1997 album Earthling. Did you hear Bowie using a quotation from On Broadway at the end. In later live versions he used that and All Day And All Of The Night (Kinks) when doing a duet with his then bass player Gail Ann Dorsey.

Great album. His next, which is even better IMO (a superb mash of post-glam, proto-punk, soul, art rock and funk) is the post apocalyptic, 1984-themed Diamond Dogs, were Ziggy has morphed into the Halloween Jack persona👍

In some ways a better album than Ziggy, very energetic. The concept is the tour through America and each song is associated with a city/place Watch That Man (NY), Aladdin Sane (, RHMS Ellinis, the boat to London)

The segment of the title (1913-1938-197?) alludes to WWIII, with Bowie believing that a third world war was imminent. Four months before the song’s release, Nixon had initiated a massive “carpet bombing” campaign in Northern Vietnam that became known as the Christmas bombing. It lasted for 11 days with more than 20,000 tons of explosives being dropped. It is not the first time Bowie wrote about a song about insanity of war. Check out Running Gun Blues from Man Who Sold the World.

Alladin Sane, both song and album, are top favorites of mine, as with Statio to Station. Not sure if you hit Diamond Dogs, again awesome title track and album. Now when will you hit Be Bop Deluxe? This is a vastly ignored tragety. Alex, of Alex and Lexy just did them, and Shawn did too. Trust me, people who know them will appreciate it. Those who don't know them will wonder "Why?". Crying to the Sky and Sleep that Burns gives you a sample of what they are, kinda Bowie meets Hendrix....trust me...

In my view, this was not as good an album as Ziggy. It was followed , at the end of 1973, by Pin Ups, a collection of covers Bowie did of the Who, the Kinks, Pink Floyd and various other British bands from the period 1967-69. It's not bad at all

Not trying to be a contrarian, but I found this album really disappointing when it came out. I thought the songwriting was a bit weak and I still think there are fewer standout tracks than the previous three albums. But what do I know - I always preferred Hunky Dory to Ziggy Stardust.

A far better album than Ziggy for me. Everyone raves about Ziggy, but I find it uninspiring and inconsistent.
