TIME is the ultimate Bowie Song.

I bought this album in 1973. I was 12 years old. It was the first "grown-up" record that I owned. I still listen to it regularly and as familiar as it is to me, it always sounds fresh and innovative. Aladdin Sane shaped not only my musical tastes but my entire world. Bowie was my first true love. Thankyou Pope. Watching you react to the wonder of David Bowie brings me great joy.

Right from the opening riff of Watch That Man, this record grabs you and doesn't let go. One of best records ever made.

'Lady Grinning Soul' is one of my all time favourite Bowie tracks. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. Those piano lines!

Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from mars, Aladdin sane, Diamond Dogs, Pinups all those Bowie albums were arranged by Mick Ronson the guitar player for the spiders from Mars. Though he never got the credit on the albums. Bowie wrote those great songs. Mick Ronson with his arrangements and guitar made that sound in the studio and live. 🎸

Hi Pope! I think you nailed it perfectly at the end of this journey : it really feels like visiting an art gallery with a big brother who can show you the best paintings, explain them to you and unlock new paths and landscapes for your curiousity to discover. Plus the fact that the author of these paintings is the big brother himself! And plus the fact that, not only he opens your mind to a whole new universe that was right there from the beginning, but he makes you want to share with others your own creations and discoveries. That's precisely what an artist is supposed to do, imo : discover new horizons, show them in his/her own way and give you the desire to explore them yourself, find new ways and share them in turn... Keep exploring! Keep finding! Keep sharing! 🙂

I've been watching a lot of these classic rock review channels, and I'm consistently impressed by the fact that it's not about the time, it's not about what you grew up with, and it's not about a narrow provincial musical taste. The bottom line is great music is great music. I've watched reviewers in the 20s, 30s, and 40s all say similar things. That the 70s produced some of the greatest music this planet has witnessed. One couple in their mid-30s was perplexed, "After all this great music from the 70s, how can you guys listen to anything that's coming out today." I concur. Certainly, great music exists all along the time spectrum. I can go back hundreds of years ago and find great music, but the creative and prolific nature of the 70s is unmatched and may never be matched again. Bowie on, my friend. Bowie on.

Great reaction! You hit on something true that Bowie was like a big brother showing you new things. As a teenager in the 70’s Bowie was very much a mentor turning me on to new music, art, ideas etc., that I probably wouldn’t have encountered in my little suburban world. I was 11 when Aladdin Sane was in the stores. I remember being fascinated and intimidated by that cover image. You have to understand there was nothing and no one doing that. It was all long hair and beards, jeans and corduroy, earth shoes and macrame. That image was almost literally a lightening bolt from the blue. Skip Pinups, which is strictly a cover album and jump to Diamond Dogs, the last of the Glam era. Bowie had ditched his band and played most of the instruments himself giving it a very sleazy decadent garage rock sound appropriate to the theme of the album and the dying gasp of glam.

THANK YOU!! One of the finest albums I have ever heard. Not a weak song to be found. And SUCH a wonderfully pure rock and roll sound.

Excellent reaction and poem as well! Aladdin Sane is an amazing album, a great listen. The title song is my favorite song of all time. Logically, Diamond Dogs should be next, I know you’ve reacted to a large chunk of it already, but worth a full play. It only gets better from here, Young Americans, Station to Station, Low, Heroes, your gonna love them. I’d recommend going back and giving The Man Who Sold the World a full listen, some buried treasure on that one. Later, skip Bowie’s 80s output and dig into the later stuff. Outside, Earthling, Heathen and Reality are great, and of course Black Star is his later day masterpiece.

Ziggy goes to America!

Welcome back Pope and you're back with a BANG!! lol. Great to see someone react to this album, who else but you, right?. "Aladdin Sane", as Bowie put it is,' Ziggy goes to America'. All the crazy and sometimes sleazy influences are there but there's amazing stuff here and fantastic playing. FIY, the track "Let's Spend The Night Together" is actually a cover of a Rolling Stones song. You know, I'd love for you to go back to the start of his album career, (which, technically, his first album is one with three different titles, but is the same album, ie. "Man Of Words, Man Of Music", "David Bowie" and "Images". but more of that at a future date). The album I'd love to see you start with is "Space Oddity". I KNOW that you will totally get his earlier stuff. It's beautifully poetic, dynamic, theatrical, gentle, powerful, introspective, philosophical and just downright brilliant. I'm not just talking about "Space Oddity" here either, but the two follow up albums, "The Man Who Sold The World" and then, "Hunky Dory". I absolutely guarantee that you will LOVE these three amazing albums from our space boy Bowie. Peace. Oh, just had to edit in that I liked your poem, very cool man.

Mike Garson's piano reflected well symbolically the schizophrenia of David Bowie's brother. The fragmented, scattered, frenetic unpredictable nature, even though most schizophrenics don't really present this way. Brilliant. his album together with Young Americans, is my goto for housecleaning music. If it's not these two, it's Joni Mitchell Court & Spark or Hissing of Summer Lawns.

You should check out the live album he did back in the 70’s “David Live” , the live versions of these songs seriously slap 👍

He was a master of many styles . Here he still rocks out , but you hear the fragmentation into experimental stuff that refers to 1930's stage shows , but very underground stuff , obscure as hell . Veering crazily , he soon was doing his version of American soul music . For creativity , he set a standard that others aspire to , but nobody has equaled in quite the same bent way .

Back with a BANG ❤ Aladdin Sane/A lad insane is a reference to his schizophrenic half brother. In Drive-in Saturday we get a movie within a song that almost predicts the rise of video and the Internet. Whole album Bowie? What a treat. So much goodness and eras and personalities await ❤

One of my favorite albums of his (Hunky Dory is my favorite) The awesome pianist, Mike Garson, still performs and can be contacted on FB! So much to love here! U are right about Time! Lady Grinning Soul is sumptuous! He wrote it about Tina Turner’s dancer, the gorgeous Claudia Lennear who may also have inspired Brown Sugar. Great great album!

First Album I brought as a 10 year old back in the early 70’s was Hunky Dory Just brillant

Panic In Detroit, Watch That Man, Lady Grinning Soul, whew! Amazing. Not one extra brush stroke. The drums, the girl vocals, the guitar.. Just right. "Ran to the window looked for a plane or two" Reminds me of 9/11. The way the guitar fades out on Panic In Detroit. Nobody can figure out to this day how to do that.

Pope!!! Long time, my friend! I hope you’ve been well and have been keeping up with Patreon as well! This is one of my absolute favorite albums by Bowie. A quaint follow up to Ziggy Stardust, and a bit of an unloading period for Bowie. Evidently he dedicated so much energy to the Ziggy Stardust character that he went insane and created this character as a direct reaction. A classic with so many greats including the title track, The Jean Genie, among many others. I would also recommend Young Americans and Station to Station. Both great albums as well. Now onto a list of catch-up recommendations: The Cranberries - Ode to my Family (or the entire album No Need to Argue) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, pretty much anything from 1976-1994 Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Joni Mitchell (influenced Tool), Tom Waits, Jim Croce, Radiohead, Coldplay, Gorillaz Glad you’re still making content, Pope! Another gem... I could have done without the Stones cover "Let's Spend The Night Together", though. He has made a whole album of covers of 1960s songs, "Pin Ups", by the way. The first album that was really successful was "Hunky Dory", but before that, he had made two others ("The Man Who Sold The World" and "Space Oddity") that have some really great songs on them. "After All", for instance. Please also check out "Sweet Thing/Candidate" and "We Are The Dead" on "Diamond Dogs". He has made so, so many great songs. Like you said, he was a "big brother" (the title of another song on "Diamond Dogs") to many people who felt somehow different, for whatever reason. Another beautiful song is "Rock'n'Roll Suicide", on the "Ziggy Stardust" album. Lyrics: "You're not alone... Gimme your hands, cause you're wonderful". That's also why he's so important to so many people.

I had suggested after watching your Ziggy album that Aladdin Sane should be next in line. Logically Diamond Dogs would be next if you choose to stay on this path. If you do, May I suggest the “live” album that features songs from all three? David Live at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, it’s a double album. I promise, you won’t regret listening or if you wanna, react to it. As always, 🖖. ✌️❤️&😁. 🍻

Hi Pope, keep sharing your poems. As for the fabulous Mr Bowie. Although Ziggy is many peoples favourite of his albums, I much prefer Aladdin Sane as its harder, dirtier, sleazier, avant garde, romantic, louder and better produced and constantly in my top 3 played albums ❤. The other two are Station to Station and Low. All three are totally different in content and atmosphere. Have a listen to them next is my suggestion. Onwards with the Bowie journey of discovery!

Yeah albums always give a greater idea on who an artist is,although his earlier album Hunky Dory is more bowie if you know what I mean.Some felt Alladinsane too comercial.

Hard to believe this album was actually divisive on first release. A lot of fans who discovered Bowie through Ziggy Stardust resented the addition of jazz pianist Mike Garson. Despite the fact that Ronson's amazing guitar work is still very much to the fore, I can remember more than one person complaining that Garson had "ruined" Bowie. With the passage of time, it's much easier to see the album for what it is, and appreciate it in its own right.

I'm asking myself, why do not do a full Iggy album, you've got 5 ones, Raw power, idiot, Lust for life, tv eye life and blah blah, ok a bit Soldier, c'mon, do it😊
