Team grease here. Quieter the better and for whatever reason, I believe it will improve the longevity. Maybe it’s because it’s thicker and with load and heat it seems like it would provide more lubricity or maybe because it would keep water out better. Not sure, but I also like it quieter. Thanks for the video. I found it interesting.

My hub being louder helps with the hikers. Ever since the covid-19 situation we’ve been having a lot of them lately. Noble wheels actually stated that oil doesn’t change the longevity of the hub. Yes you’re right about being better for water but here in southern cali we don’t have much rain. Thanks for watching bro 🤙🏼 :47 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mt9paMuEmJm7oXU.html

@@CalaveraChronicles yup, I grew up in North County SD and know about it being dry more often than not. In fact, I usually just dust off my bike and sponge bathe it with a rag instead of using the hose. It helps all the parts last longer if you can get them clean without water. I do however have to disagree with you about using your free hub to warn hikers that you’re coming. They often don’t hear freehub sounds (even I9’s!) and are startled. I started using this a few years back and have been praised and thanked by hundreds (yes 100s!) of trail users, including other riders, for using it to warn them I’m coming. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLpxo7iLvpa9enk.html

grease is not good it makes the pulls stick most of the time so they don’t engage proper and can sometimes cause the hub to skip. Hub oil all the way 😂

I’ve used Dumond Tech chain oil but never messed hub oil. My Hadley hubs use zero weight grease but I’m not sure what my Hope hubs or White Industry hubs use. My only concern with using oil in the free hub would be that it would need to be monitored to make sure it doesn’t dry out.

Fit couple in the Philippines I have a couple of friends that have been running that for awhile with no issues. I also feel that the seal does a great job in keeping the oil in place. We’ll see what happens in the long run. The oil is recommended by i9 as well.

Calavera Chronicles I9 hubs are amazing and I’m sure that they will do fine. I’m really hard on my Hadley’s since I mash on them with my SS mountain bikes. The Hadley SS hubs have been completely overhauled with new bearings,seals and paws a couple of times but I have had them for 5 and 10 years (2 versions) I haven’t had the Hope SS/Trials hub pulled apart and serviced yet, they’re only 2 years old.

I have a set of Enduro 305s with the hydra hubs on order. Probably still 2-3months out but slightly concerned with how the drag of the I9s will feel on trail compared to my stock DTswiss M1700 wheels. Did the spin test as you did and they went a full 30 seconds longer at 1:35
@CalaveraChronicles
@CalaveraChronicles 3 жыл бұрын
The spin test is just for fun I’m sure there’s way more factors that should be considered. Like how they perform under load. I don’t feel like they coast any longer or shorter than my previous wheels they just feel really good while pedaling. So I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
@daveharris39
@daveharris39 2 жыл бұрын
Not assuming anything, but the op said in one the responses that he torqued his wheel to 15nm each time. Before reading that, I wondered about it, since he didn't mention it in the video. I imagine wheel torque could have an impact on the spin test, as will the weight of the rotating assembly, and to some extent the aerodynamics of spokes and tire knobs. P.S. I just did the spin test on my Hydra's with extra grease, leaving the brake caliper on (I don't think it rubs at all) and got 50 seconds of spin.
@unclebenz86
@unclebenz86 2 жыл бұрын
So many factors to Consider. Temperature, Wind, torque on axle bearings, weight on rim/tire, speed if the wheel. Even his comparison isn't exactly scientific, but good enough to get an idea. Don't worry about it, I just got my i9, and have to say I was running 120 click noas before, I even preferred them for a couple of reasons. And they were ALOT cheaper. I9 hydra are sick hubs but tbh anything more than 100 clicks will do perfectly fine.

I agree! It was just for fun. But I do gotta say that the 690 POE has come in handy on super tech stuff where you just need that extra push with the least amount of pedal stroke.

That's interesting. I wanted to quiet my I-9 Torch, because when I coast, the noise is picked up by my Go Pro. I used Shimano Dura Ace grease, and it's substantially quieter, and the grease will slow down wear, but in terms of resistance to spinning, the grease looks to offer the most resistance. Hey, but that's okay! Thanks for the video.

I just had new bearings put in my Hydra's (after only a year! Paid extra for higher quality bearings hoping for more longevity) I asked the mechanic to wipe out the grease and add oil to make it louder - but I think he misunderstood me, because it is now maybe 25% as loud as it was. So, yes, add grease and it will be much quieter.
