The vent being blocked is never the cause of that specific fuse going bad. I have had to explain this many times. I have never had a call back in 10 years on this repair but have seen many others. The two things on that style dryer that will cause that fuse to fail are the element or the thermostat (4 wire). The way to tell which one is test the element with a meter for continuity and also check to make sure that the element isn’t shorted to ground. To do that you want to check from each individual terminal to the element housing ( make sure wires are removed when testing to prevent false readings ). Also remove element and do a visual inspection because some of them will be bowed and intermittently shorting but not read bad at the time of test. While u have the wires off check between both element leads for continuity. If the element checks good replace the 4 wire thermostat on the blower housing.

Follow this advice. I found the bad fuse, vent was super nasty with lint. I then read this comment and checked continuity between one of the leads on the heating element and the body of the element. Beeeeeep. Pulled the element, and sure enough one other plastic pieces holding the coil had broke and the coil was touching metal piece that holds all the plastic retainers. The coil was somewhat stuck. Guessing it started to weld itself when the fuse and breaker tripped. Thank you for the advice sir!

Thank you for these very helpful and educational videos. My husband and I saved hundreds of dollars by investing in a $15 voltage meter and checking to see which fuses worked or did not in diagnosing a gas dryer that would not start. Eventually we found out that our door switch was not working and we spent less than $20 bucks and fixed the dryer ourselves! Not only did we save money, but we learned some important lessons about maintenance and upkeep and it built our confidence in terms of trying to do things ourselves.

Thanks for the comment, we appreciate it. The reason we don't talk about removing the thermal fuse is because it shouldn't be hard. However, if the connections were crimped by the manufacture, it may be smart to use a pair of needle nose pliers to wiggle the wires off. If this doesn't work, please refer to the repair help section of our website.

@locomojo04 That symbol is the diode testing symbol, an added feature to that continuity setting. Sounds like you have continuity through the fuse which indicates it is closed for continuity thus good.

Good tip on checking the dryer vent system for clogs. Mine is over 15-years old and I just had to replace my dryer heating coil. Since I had it disconnected, checked the vent tube and had TONS of old lint in there. I got up on the roof, where it exits the house, and again found tons of lint I had to dig out. I had to go buy a new dryer vent tube so also picked up a cleaner brush and, again, tons of lint found inside the vent tube going up to the roof. (Tip: Even after you think you have it all clean, use a leaf blower to blow from the dryer out and you'll be shocked at how much comes out.)

Ok thanks alot. It seemed good to me. Just trying to figure out a problem. I've tested element, thermostats, and fuse. Cleaned everything out, checked the exhaust vent. Tested the breaker, plug, and voltage at element. It is hotter now. Maybe it's as hot as it goes. The elements are red hot.

Hello I tested a fuse identical to the one you actually tested. When I put my digital multimeter on 'Resistance with Tone' and I get 000. When I put it on the lowest ohm setting of 200, I get a 0.7 reading. What I'm wondering is that my Resistance with Tone symbol does not look like yours. The symbol where mine is looks like an arrow with a plus at the end. The same symbol that's next to the 2000ohm on your multimeter. Does this mean my fuse has continuity and is good?

Ok Hopefully someone can help me.. I just bought a Multimeter and it's my first time ever using one. Well I was testing my dryer thermal Fuse at the lowest setting (200) And it had no continuity but once i upped it to about 200k 2000k It fluctuated to 0.00 So i'm not sure if I should replace the fuse or not?
@autumndawn3719
@autumndawn3719 6 жыл бұрын
200k and 2000k are very high readings, so smaller resistances will be rounded to 0. This is why you were told, specifically, to set the meter to the lowest setting.
