Demo of the Maxim Semiconductor DS2401 Silicon Serial Number IC.
We review the datasheet, and then demo a really neat gadget, the Dallas Semiconductor / Maxim Integrated / Analog Devices DS2401 Silicon Serial Number IC.

I'm only finding the DS2401 on DigiKey's website. There is currently an eBay seller in China that is offering five DS2401s in the TO-92 package for $3.53 with free shipping, that may be the best deal out there.

In making reproduction battery packs for an old Mac PowerBook and I need to read the serial off the ds2400 in the old pack and then I want to copy it to a ds2401. Can you provide some arduino code that can do a write?

Good question, I don’t know how to overwrite the data in the DS2401, or what NVM technology they are using, so it may not even be possible. You could probably use one of the simpler PIC microcontrollers to reproduce the functionality of the 2401, and you could obviously write any s/n you want into that. Sounds like an interesting project

@@NetworkXIII do you think that ALL of the battery packs have the same serial number that Apple would have programmed onto the the DS2400 or do you think that the serial number on it is just the default that is on the DS2400 from the factory so each battery has a unique number? In that case I could just purchase a batch of them and be done and no need to read or write them. What I do know is the Ds2400 is required in the battery pack. If I try to power the laptop up without it it won’t boot. Once I connect the original DS2400 then it boots right up.

⁠@@sideburnApple likely buys them in lots where a sequence of unique serial numbers are already burned into the NVM, that way they don’t have to worry about programming them.

@@NetworkXIII hmm well these are from the 90’s. I guess the only way to find out is to try a. Of the shelf 2400 and see how it goes.
