A very impressive clear video, thanks. Several interesting comments below, for example more moving parts to wear out and more expense for the customer.

It's also another part that wears out quickly, can't be resurfaced, and it expensive to replace. When these things wear out, they're absolutely terrible to drive.
@AnIdiotAboard_ Жыл бұрын
Yeah but on the other side of the coin, you can go aftermarket, and get a DMF built to outlast the car, which i happen to have done to 2 cars, did it to a DM02 2.0 Tdi she did 350,000 miles on the DMF and it saw way to many clutches My BKD Audi has an aftermarket job, its now on its 4th clutch and last time the clutch was done, the DMF was only ezhibiting about 4mm of movement, WELL WELL within tollerance and easy do 220,000 MORE miles. So thats half a million miles on 2 DMFs............ And its cheaper yes, way more money to buy, over a grand for the audi, but it saves me £400 to 600 every time the clutch is done.

@electric7487 Жыл бұрын
Or, you could simplify things a lot by using single-mass flywheels with bigger counterweights. The worst vibrations are attenuated with great effect, and the extra cost and complexity of a dual-mass flywheel can be done away with.

Would be much easier to use a hydraulic fliuid dampner harmonic balancer . Would be cheaper to replace as well as less moving parts. I guess an enginers job is to over complicate everything.

Does anyone know if cross-plane cranks have the same vibes problem?
@snivesz32 Жыл бұрын
Yes, although all cranks still have 4-cycles, only 1 of which is the power cycle, so you still have torsional vibration.
@electric7487 Жыл бұрын
On a V8 engine, a crossplane crank is not much worse than a flat-plane V8. But a four-stroke crossplane inline 4 is terrible from a torsional stabdpoint.

I am curious why this is a problem NOW after decades running cars without them ?
@nikolak9494 жыл бұрын
because EU wanted less emissions, and manufacturers responded with smaller but more powerful engines for bigger and heavier cars (compare engine/weight/power/co2 in Golf 4 1.9 TDI and Golf 7 1.6TDI)... and voila.. shit happens... if we had same amount of emissions as EURO 3 or 4 and engine sizes around 2-2.5l per block (I4 or I/V6) there wouldn't be a need for higher power for normal cars, only for performance oriented versions.

This garbage cost me $5,500 dollars because 2 different mechanics could not figure out the random jarring vibration coming from chassis of car during deceleration. I replaced all my bushings on car to find out its this piece of s%*%. I ordered a single mass performance to replace it. I figured it out from research on Internet. Does tuning an engine reduces the lifespan of this flywheel since the curved radii of the bearing tracks are now not in sync with the torque profile? Or does it just make a less smoother ride because the harmonic resonance frequency is changed?

Mercedes in f1 gets 52%-55% thermal efficiency and getting 65% is not that impossible (CCGT could get 80%) Plus with an engine you can do the assholery of making 140 decibels of noise, you cant do that on EV

Just because the ICE is at a disadvantage here compared to EV, it doesn't mean that people should stop try improving what we have and throw it away. There is a ton of cases where thqt ICE is still favourable. Tell that to the construction, mining, drilling operators. Tesla is good to own in california to drive to In-N-Out, but the world is bigger than that.
