Finishing My DIY Rooftop Tent | Overland Truck Camper ep. 7
In this episode of the DIY Overland Truck Camper build series, I finally finish and mount the rooftop tent that completes the entire setup of this DIY truck camper. I also sew the fabric for the canvas of the tent portion of the camper. After sewing for the first time, I can say that it's not my favorite form of craftsmanship, but was extremely necessary for this project. I ran into a few issues along the way and came up with solutions to those problems as they came up. Hopefully you enjoy this one as much as I did. It was crazy finally seeing the camper start to come together. In the next episode of this series, I'll be doing all of the finishing touches to make this Overland truck camper complete.

Hey man, love your videos, but just wanna say it is really REALLY hard to watch with all the fast paced spinning you do with the cam effects. I don't even get motion sick but it actually starts causing a little ishiness in my stomach. I either have to fast forward or look away until it's done and that sorta defeats the whole point. Keep the videos coming!

@@SatyrGrey Thanks a ton for your feedback on the new timelapse style. It seems like most people are really enjoying it but for some it makes it difficult to watch. I definitely see and understand both sides of it. I think I'm still going to use this style but keep it to a minimum and use more close up real-time shots as well as regular timelapse footage. Thanks again for your feedback as I keep testing out different filming/editing styles

hey buddy, you will probably have to make a loose sliding piece for the 2nd part of the bed surface, as opposed to having it fold out, since you don’t have a rounded top which would accommodate the path of a fold-out piece (it will hit the straight hard top piece & not fold all the way over unless it’s way smaller than the stationary piece) -- whereas you could make a sliding piece which is the same size as the stationary piece. maybe you don’t need it that big, though, since you still need to leave room for the area where you’re going to climb up to get up *into* the bed : )

love your builds. If you sew eyelets to the inside of the canvas sides, you can make a bungee with hooks so when you go to shut it the sides will naturally fold in to help with the bunching of canvas getting in the way.

I am a seamstress, I am glad you took in account for extra allowance before cutting. I think you did a great job, for your first sewing project. 👍👍👍👍such a great inspiration. Is the fabric waterproof or don't forget too. If you have to waterproof it, test a piece of the scrap fabric to make sure it does not stain. For the damage to the fabric, cut some of the scrap fabric larger than the damage area, there are many products at a sewing store you can attach the scrap to the inside wrong side facing in as a patch

I love your ingenuity. One thing I would recommend, is the next time you build a tent, put he solid panel on the inside of the netting, with the two connected at the bottom. Add in some 6" tails of the solid fabric at the bottom and then you can open and close it easily from the inside, roll the solid part down and tie it out of the way.

Awesome job, and you put zippers in, ON YOUR FIRST SEWING PROJECT. MAN, GREAT JOB! One thing I would recommend, is that using butyl tape around where you put the fan/vents in the top, and where the pop-up tent sits on top of the camper frame. I didn't see you install any, but that could have been deleted in editing, but I didn't hear you mention anything about butyl tape either. It's not that cheap, but if you want a water-tight seal, GUARANTEED, butyl tape is the way to go. It's pretty easy to work with, and seals between the surfaces perfectly, filling in uneven surfaces like magic, and seals any screws or mounting hardware you use at the same time. Now if you ever have to replace it, like if you had a manual vent fan and upgrade to a larger one, or an electric one, it's a you-know-what to take off, but you won't find a better product. It's most commonly used in RV's, but a lot of DIY van builds and camper conversions use it too. Did you use any kind of waterproofing on the tent material? That's something you're gonna need as well. What kind of material did you use? Regular tent canvas, or maybe duck canvas? This video just gave me a great idea for my SUV conversion. I have a Rendezvous that I love, and with the back seats out, I have an area that's 4 foot wide and about 6 1/2 feet long, but it's only 4 feet high. I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with a way to put some more headroom in it, and I think I just figured out how to do it, thanks to your video. Can't decide if I want to do the single sided raise for the pop up, or have a dual sided that would give me 6 feet of standing room almost the full length of the cargo area. Looks like it's time to go back to the drawing board for me, (well, a digital drawing board using Google SketchUP), and get into some serious engineering. LOL. This idea would save me from needing a different vehicle, like a cargo van or box truck, I wouldn't have to tow anything, and I would still have pretty good aerodynamics since the pop up wouldn't be very much higher than the original roof when driving, while giving me the headroom I need when parked. Can't thank you enough for this idea!
