By turning a blind eye to the origin of the ingots that arrive in the country, the United Arab Emirates is indirectly supporting a dangerous and unregulated industry. The OECD is calling for much stricter rules.

Let me play the devil advocate since all the comments are for the illegal trade of gold we have the same problem in sudan where the militias/current dictatorship are in the charge of the gold mining industry while instead it should go through the finance ministry because any export should be done via this ministry so that the profit can benefit the citizen of country providing much needed welfare, construction etc.. When you limited or no government oversight all the profits goes into the pockets of the corrupt rather than the citizen The natural resources of a country should benefit all of the national citizen rather a small subset of them

This is completely false. In Sudan you can go mine & search for gold. Nobody will stop you. You only need a special export permit if you want to export your gold. But you can always sell it locally, for a similar price to global price.

I have tested a lot of gold that comes out of Dubai. There 24 karat comes out at under 22 karat. Be very cautious to by gold in Dubai.
