My teacher started us off on waterfowl, I hated the mallard I did with a passion, put so many holes in it, but the good thing about birds if sewn right you cant even see em and that bird was the best bird out of bunch that we did that I liked the outcome of LOL!

Great fleshing video. Was wondering what brand of scalpel you have and where you might of bought it. It looks really comfortable using it in the fleshing manner that you are using.

The last box of scalpel blades I had were no.22 and the brand was Lance. Ordered from local pharmacy. But I’m not a brand buyer. Every time I buy whatever brand they offer.

@@ArtofTaxidermy Sorry Ben. I meant the handle that you are using for the scalpel. It is pretty big and wide. Looks like you can have more control doing the scraping/shaving on the bird skin. Thanks !

What wire wheel, name brand, is that and size. I have a 4 inch fine, but the bristles do not seem to move as freely as yours, I notice the wire will actually bend a little while you are wheeling.

Well I’ve had mine for ages. But I bought the heavy duty machine that Mackenzie or van dyke were selling and I also ordered both kinds of wires they were selling at the time. One soft and one coarse. I use the coarse one in geese , turkeys and eagles.

When you sew it up what kind of needle are you using? Also is this the same thread and needle you use when you do the final mounting?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Most birds are sewn up with regular cotton thread ( make sure it’s not too thin to break that’s all ) and regular needle for repair and closing up.

What kind of problems will occur if we make it without completely removing the fat inside the leather?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
On a bird like waterfowls,,, fat layers are too thick and if you leave them behind then can get rancid and get smelly, they can leak into the fearhers and make the feathers greasy, or at least they can pull the feather quills by shrinking from inside the skin and mess up your grooming when the skin is drying. so I recommend cleaning it completely.

@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
@@Percy1800sDetective absolutely... I actually use the wire wheel on waterfowls, Turkeys and sometimes pheasants.. the rest is done by hand and a saw blade. I did everything by hand even the waterfowls for over 10 years, before I got introduced to wire wheel.

I have tried several low budget cleaning methods now and had similar experience as others, the fleshing wheel motor over heats and shuts down. Would you consider publishing any motor specs or maybe even a part number from that motor you’re using? McKenzie’s description is really vague and I’d just like to upgrade to a real motor as my stand and wheel choice I think are good. I appreciate your help.

What wheel do you use? I’ve shredded 2 wigeon already because the wheel I was using was too hard and rough and not soft. Where do I get a soft one?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
the softness of the wire and also the motor RPM is important.. look into Mckenzie or Van dyke taxidermy supplies. thats where I got mine.

hey I am doing my first duck and I was wondering what to do if I don't have access to a wire wheel what should I do. Also when I skin the duck out and dont have time to flesh it what should I do with it keep it chilled or refreeze iit or another option? Thanks!

@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, thanks for stopping by. .. I did mount ducks for years before I realized there is something called a wire wheel... I used a combination of scissors and wire brush, and some used broken pieces of hack saw blade and scalpel blade... have them all handy and give it shot. you can do it it just takes longer.. and if you cant finish it, you can either bag and fridge for a day or bag and freeze for whenever you get back to it,, you'd better not leave it for too long since there is no meat left in the skin and it can get dehydrated sooner. good luck

The biggest thing is being able to fit the wings back inside... if you are use to inverting the wings you shouldn’t have any problem , but if you like to leave the wing feathers attached to the bones then bigger geese wings might be a bit tricky to fit back inside.
