One Piece is really freaking long so it's very easy to forget stuff. Considering how often old characters are brought back and past events are referenced, it can definitely be a problem. I can't tell you how many times I've found myself wondering "Who the hell is this???" or "When did that happen???" lol. It does make One Piece very good for rewatches/rereads though. The amount of foreshadowing is insane and can only really be appreciated by experiencing the series a second time.

My take on Luffy vs Ussop altercation and escalation of the situation is that both have their own well deserving point of views. And at least in the circumstances it has started, Ussop should be given the benefit of the doubt, even though Luffy took the Right decision, and Ussop was acting irrationally. But both of them were going through deep stuff in their heads which escalated the situation. The fault was with the situation not anyone specific, as Luffy and others have already went through the shock, grief and acceptance of the situation, by the time they met Ussop and told him the info, where as Ussop was directly handed with the bad news in a blunt way without any apparent second thought nor remorse, which fed into his inner struggle and insecurities... Especially considering Ussop's connection with the Merry and his insecurity of being useless and guilt of losing the money. Ussop was never given a fair chance to digest the situation and think it through. And Luffy's casual, straight-up nonchalant emotionless instruction of abandoning the ship... Didn't help the situation either... And Ussop's own denial of the situation made it worse. On top of all this, Ussop's insecurity of being useless and guilt of losing the money.. weighed in on him. But still everyone on the crew except Ussop took their time, discussed with Iceberg to come to a conclusion that Merry is a lost cause, as even Luffy was initially in denial. Ussop was never given a chance to got through this and was expected to accept the instruction upfront... no questions asked, Especially expecting a person like Ussop who is specially connected with the ship and relating his own situation in comparison to the ship... is absolutely not fair. Ussop saw Merry as a crewmate and not as a ship and his insecurity of being useless and being left out, kicked in, when it was decided to oet go of Merry as its no longer fit for the Voyage. Also, the fight escalated to that extent not because of Ussop alone, but it has both parties involved. We can't put the whole blame on Ussop nor say Captain said so, so everyone must follow. Even though Captain is the decision maker and that's how it works, Luffy was never a dictator, and everyone voluntary accepted his leadership and his instructions as they trust him. But Ussop is surely acting irrationally, but the situation is also as intense and drastic. Of course Ussop was acting irrational, of course Luffy didn't do a great job of breaking the news inspite if his intentions, of course Ussop then got all riled up as he felt he was the only one who cared fir their dear crewmate, Merry.... It's a big messy complex situation. And then Ussop started saying stuff which he shouldn't have as he was hurting that has snapped it for Luffy. But while handling such a sensitive situation, especially with a person like Ussop who is close to the ship, one can't expect him to agree immediately right away... and at least should've given him time... especially when he was in a state where he is trying to shoulder the entire blame ofMerry getting damaged, them losing money so Merry can't be fixed, him being weak, imperfect, useless, etc etc... Luffy didn't want to hurt Ussop anymore so, he didn't drag it, but Luffy still did rip the bandaid pretty roughly by not giving Ussop any time to digest it. That's a pretty drastic way to receive a shocking news and act sanely for anyone. And Luffy also didn't want Ussop to feel bad and guilty about not being good enough of a shipwright to safeguard Merry's structural integrity or losing the money. And Luffy has this intention but avoids mentioning it and just casually says to Ussop to let go 9f Merry, as He was trying to make it feel not a big deal for which Ussop might feel guilty about,... But it did have quite opposite effect in Ussop.. making him think that they don't care about Merry or Merry is getting discarded as it's Useless which might happen with himself (Ussop) being useless. It goes lot deeper than what we expect. I can't say Luffy is at fault as well, as Luffy himself is hurting and Luffy didn't want to show his weakness outside, as he is acting brave to keep everyone at ease and do the right thing as the captain to protect his crew... And make Ussop not feel guilty about it. And Luffy was fighting with his fear of losing his friends (if Merry breaks) while battling his own urge of denial to the situation and be responsible and protect everyone. Luffy was also going through a lot of stuff in his head. No one is at fault. It's the situation. However, Luffy should've been a little less blunt or casual about it... Or give the news in a little more sensitive way .. That wouldn't have caused this much escalation. Though it's not Luffy-esque to do so. That's also there... And Luffy only conveyed the info as not a big deal as to make Ussop not feel guilty about it all... And unfortunately THAT was approach was the wrong one especially for Ussop who is feeling emotionally betrayed for them letting go of the ship, an valuable but injured crewmate... Also, Ussop didn't disrespect his captain right away. Luffy got riled up as Luffy's own internal struggle got over his emotions and Luffy said pretty harsh things which hurt Ussop. If Sanji wouldn't have stopped Luffy, Luffy was almost about to ask Ussop to leave.... So, when the situation escalated Luffy said stuff which can't be taken back and they did cause a significant damage which lead to Ussop leaving and then challenging a dual. I personally can't say anyone is at fault, as both are right in their own way... And one can't expect any sane person to act sanely just after receiving a shocking news in a blunt, nonchalant, insensitive way... they obviously will need some time to digest, which Luffy didn't give Ussop, as ... what I feel is that Luffy himself is on the verge of it and he wouldn't have been strong if it was delayed any longer, and Luffy couldn't have been as decisive. So, Luffy was mostly trying his best to get it over with as quickly as possible, without breaking down and lose his way as a captain... But that was the quite opposite mindset necessary for someone as involved with Merry as Ussop to get onboard. It's an unfortunate incident which snowballed out of control due to overflowing emotions. That's it. And it's beautiful character writing and very natural escalation... Providing the most heartbreaking moments.. how Oda sensei handled was brilliant.

Merphy will mention this but the reason luffy came off strong was because 1. He didn't want usopp to blame himself for not getting the merry fixed since he lost the money, it was his way of being considerate 2. Iceberg called him out on being a bad captain because luffy(just like usopp) was being emotional and wanted to keep sailing the merry. After iceberg told him you are a bad captain for putting your crew in danger like that, that's when he decided to act like a captain and put his foot down. This arc does a lot for luffy as a captain and the strawhats crew in general.

It's easy to point to Usopp in the argument, but Luffy is also dealing with his insecurities. He nearly lost to Foxy. He did lose to Aokiji. Yeah, we see Luffy's initial reaction to the ship's news too and by the time he's telling Usopp the news, Luffy has already had time to process that information. Usopp at that moment hasn't at all and is basically having the same gut reaction that Luffy had: "You're lying", "Just fix her, we have the money". Luffy hates the fact as much as Usopp does but he is unable to convey the same message that Iceburg gave him and things just escalate really quickly.

Oh, man. Coming from someone who grew up in a fishing town with a shipyard, finding out Usopp KNEW they were sailing on a ship that could sink at any moment since Skypiea was the infuriating part from my perspective. Again, I come from a town where boats are a genuine part of the family, and we cry and mourn for them, but Usopp here was willfully putting his human family in danger, three of whom cannot swim at all. I've actually seen ships sink because of improper maintenance, been to funerals for those lost at sea... So that bit hit really close to home for me.

When Luffy first heard the Merry was done for in the shipyard he reacted the same way Usopp did. But he's the captain and needs to make tough choices to protect his crew. And then Usopp was projecting a bit of himself onto the Merry. He doesn't feel useful enough to the crew. They were feeling very different things when they fought. A sort of underlying thing I dont see alot of people touch on with why Luffy had to be so stern towards Usopp was not just over the ship but also the fact that he always calls himself the Captain. Its why I love the line where Zoro says, "We're not kids playing pirate," if they're gonna really be contenders for the One Piece & a respected pirate crew you cant have a crewmate undermining Luffy's position as the leader even if it is a joke/lie. Its like introducing yourself as the manager to a client at your job in front of the actual manager.

Honestly, I can't speak for anyone else, but I was much more on Luffy's side in the Usopp/Luffy argument. Like, I can sympathize with Usopp and see where he was coming from, but given what Luffy was told about the state of the Going Merry by the shipwrights, his decision to get a new ship was unusually logical and thought out from him. Granted, he definitely handled the argument with Usopp about as poorly as he possibly could, but his underlying reasoning for his decision was pretty sound. Also, don't forget that this couldn't have been an easy decision for Luffy either. He thought of the Going Merry as a friend as well, but he recognized the limitations that the Merry has as a ship and decided that thebbest5corse if action was to leave the Merry behind. Couple this with his realization that he's been treating the Merry poorly by not having a proper shipwright thanks to the evaluation of Merry's state by Galley Law and his newfound feelings of inadequacy as a result if his outright loss to Aokiji, and Luffy's dealing with just as much, if not more, turmoil at this decision than Usopp was. The both of them accidentally triggered each other's deepest feelings if fear in that argument, with Usopp being afraid that he would be left behind when he was eventually determined to be "too weak" to keep following Luffy due to Ludfy deciding to leave the Merry, and Usopp triggered Luffy's fear that he isn't a good enough captain to keep his crew (including the ship) safe with his talk of hiw the Merry needs their help and they shouldn't abandon it. They both pressed the exact right buttons to accidentally trigger the other's insecurities. But I fall on Luffy's s8de of the argument because he's trying to make the best decision for his crew, and he has no reason to doubt Galley Law when they tell him that the Merry is done and taking it out to sea again will result in them all sinking. Edit: I know you eventually recanted on the Usopp/Luffy argument, but my statement here was more about what I was thinking and feeling in the heat of the moment, not looking at the story via retrospective.

Maybe add an overall portion to the end where you'll talk more about the arc in it's entirety, even if you dabble in that during the last part(s) of your reactions. Fun fact, this saga is also known as World Government saga by some people. Which fits since it does open up your understanding on the World Government.

I personally didn't take sides during the Luffy vs. Usopp fight... it really felt like being a fly on the wall watching a family fight and it felt so uncomfortable and emotional for me. It was almost this feeling of... should I be seeing this? It was so gut wrenching and emotional. I could see both sides and it just felt like I was watching a tragedy unfold. But it was interesting to hear your initial take on it and how you changed your mind after hearing what Franky said. Love this format!

The best way to understand Luffy during the Usopp argument is calling back at Iceburg's line when Luffy said he'll sail with Merry believing in her, "I'm amazed, and you call yourself the ship's Captain?" That line hits Luffy hard, because Luffy is still young and impressionable, he takes things face value which is why people can easily lie to him. Especially when it came to someone older who knew what he was talking about like Iceburg seriously questioning Luffy as a captain, similar to Vivi back in the beginning of Drum Island. So like Murphy said he was trying to not be emotional and level headed as a captain should be, aka his usual cheerful self. Usopp's sense of insecurities can be seen beforehand after the fight with Aokiji where he goes, "Are we gonna fight guys like that in the future? All I did was run away."

Nice to see a fellow Usopp supporter. I believe no one had bad intentions, but Usopp was insecure and Luffy didn't manage telling the news well. I think it was as tragic as it was specifically because it couldn't have happened any other way given the circumsrances, and it's hard to cope with that

Great format. Both work; vlog as you go= more fresh, after the arc= more hindsight. It's fun having your reaction as you're in the middle of it, like you siding with Usopp. It shows that it was well written and compelling enough. Luffy was sad but was able to make peace with moving forward, which is maturity and leadership. Usopp had a more personal emotional attachment due to being Kaya's gift (from his island) and having repaired it all along. He's also a very emotional guy overall who values loyalty and bravery a lot. He's a coward and a liar because he values these ideals so high that he doesn't feel worthy of them. And remember his dad left him and his mom died. So he's basically a guy who was alone a lot of his life, which tanked his self-esteem and made him feel guilty for his circumstances. His challenge is overcoming these emotional wounds and accepting himself. Abandoning the ship is part of abandoning his own self, his link to the past, and accepting to move forward. The creation of an alter ego is a good way to approach a difficult issue that cannot be dealt with frontally. It's a transitional state to allow the shifting of a situation and transformation of the self. Also very comical and oddly on point that Luffy doesn't recognize him, because he has become different.

I think that Sanji line "A real man forgives" was more for his friendship with Robin and Nami because when you go back to Nami's betrayal to the crew. Sanji was already learning how to read Nami's actions. Like he and Luffy didn't believe that Nami could kill Ussop. She was lying to herself and I think Luffy and Sanji could tell that she was pushing them away. I think that also is one reason Sanji respects Luffy and one reason why he kicked Luffy here because after all that after Nami finally asked for help they ALL got up to take down Arlong park. It's really a poetic story how lying to yourself can be called out

Lemme introduce you to the "Did I just cried over a fucking boat?" club. We all suffer down here. Also, Luffy had to act with the safety of his crew being the priority. He IS the captain. His priority is his crew while Usopp's priority is to keep something he got from his home village. Luffy also just went through a traumatic event of almost losing Robin since he couldn't defeat Aokiji. And to be fair, Usopp did provoked him in the heat of the moment, they were past the point of crewmates' quarrel at that point. It's about a crew member doubting his captain's decision in regards of what is best for the crew.

I definitely like this format because it's really fun to see your raw feelings on things cause you and I were SO FAR on polar opposites at the start of this arc. I've never been a fan of Usopp so I was SO GLAD to see him go and was 100% with Luffy on this. I was sad to feel like we had to leave Merry behind but I understood the severity of the situation. But to get to see the progression of your thoughts through the arc was a lot of fun, from your guesses that some were on target some were way off (and the memes you kinda intercut validating or shaming yourself were great).

I think Luffy's attitude at the beginning of his argument with Ussop was partly him trying to help his buddy to not blame himself too much, but I think there's more to it. I think the other half is that Luffy is trying to convince himself that his decision to leave the Merry is a good one and not as emotionally devastating as it is. But as soon as Ussop accuses Luffy of making this decision too lightly, bringing into question how much he actually cares about the Merry, that Luffy's happy-go-lucky mask falls away, because now he can't hide how painful this decision actually is for him. He can't stop those emotions he was trying to suppress and deny from flooding in, and with a vengeance, and it only helps to fuel the blow-up between him one of his best friends.

For me, the Luffy and Usopp fight is so understandable from both points of view, and that's why it's so painful. I can see every bit of Usopp's self-doubts and relate so hard, and Luffy trying to be a leader who can't really handle things like this with the care that it deserves because he doesn't, at this point, I think, understand how much Usopp fears being a disappointment. Also, it's extremely difficult not to say, well a lot of things! Hang in there. Be happy you didn't have to read this as it was published. That was kind of hard, haha. You were not supposed to see who the CP9 were! Everyone is shocked at that point, it's such a great reveal. And don't worry about being wrong, getting that immediate emotional reaction is great, it's a reminder of what the rest of us felt when getting to these same parts. By the way, I never really think of Water 7 and Enies Lobby as two separate arcs, and one of the reasons is that Water 7, as you noted, doesn't really have a climax. Edit: This format is great, I like it!

Your perspectice on Usopp vs Luffy is so interesting to hear! When I saw TotallyNotMark's blind review, he was pretty neutral. He said neither of them were wrong, and that this conflict felt natural. He didn't really take a side, because he agreed with both of them. Then Books and Tropes' review was the complete opposite of yours. She totally sided with Luffy, and was upset with Usopp. Part of that was because she wasn't attached to the Merry, but also because she thought Luffy absolutely made the right call and Usopp was the one that went way too far. I remember earlier on that you typically prefer darker and more bloody manga (or something to that effect). So I was really expecting you to side with Luffy. Take the cold, logical approach. But it was a really pleasant surprise to find that you are entirely within Usopp's corner. And you thought that Luffy was the one that went way too far. Personally, I take a similar stance to TNM. It was a nuanced conflict that felt very believable. I felt very strongly for both Luffy and Usopp. Because the Merry is more than just a ship. And yet, Luffy absolutely made the right call. But either way, I love seeing these different perspectives on this same event.

The characters all behaved so realistically here. You can tell Luffy was doing everything he could to avoid being straight with Usopp. He didn't even want to speak the words. He didn't want to tell Usopp that the Merry couldn't be repaired. In that scene I could feel Luffy fighting himself internally while Usopp was freaking out, and in the end it simply came down to Usopp not respecting the decision of his captain, which is something that can't happen in a Pirate Crew. If people stop respecting the captain, it's GG

Haven't watched all the way through yet, but I want to say something in regards to the little "Nope I'm dumb" graphic that pops up around the 11 minute mark. I truly hope that is said in jest and you don't actually feel stupid when your predictions are wrong. One Piece is DENSE with information, both open and hidden, and on your first read it's incredibly hard to pick out what's important and what's not and how exactly it all fits together. I LOVE seeing people try to speculate about things like this, and sometimes they come up with ideas that don't pan out but are still really cool that I find very interesting, if nothing else in a "what-if" sort of sense. So please don't stop speculating and don't put yourself down too much if you're wrong, that's all part of the fun for me as a watcher of you and you as a reader of One Piece.

I'm actually a bit in between you and Merphy on this. I think Usopp feeling somewhat irritated by Luffy is perfectly valid as well, as they both struggle through some other personal stuff here that explodes around the Merry but isn't soley about it and because they are both a bit stuck in their own struggles right now they "miss" each other on meeting at an understanding. Usopp clearly struggles with his own insecurity, he lost the money, he couldn't get it back, he failed as a shipwright keeping the Merry intact, he is the "weakling" and he is scared that the crew could abandon him because he isn't useful to them like the Merry and will also be "discarded". (Something that is interesting about Robin btw that also ties in here: she keeps calling everyone on the crew by their roles, but Usopp is simply "longnose" which is maybe just another reminder why he feels useless and not with a clear purpose on the crew). And then there is Luffy's side and that's where I strongly will die on the hill how important Long Ring Long Land is for the buildup to this. Because Luffy is starting to worry that he is "failing" as a captain and I think the seeds for it are started there. The Foxy games suddenly got real seriuos at the end when Luffy realised him just agreeing to these silly games was putting his crew at risk. He could have easily lost a crewmate there because he as a captain made a choice for all of them that another crewmember would have been put on the line for, and he almost couldn't fix this with strength alone. This is followed by being completely helpless against Aokiji and almost losing Robin. Then in Water 7 Usopp asked for Luffy's protection when he had the money but Luffy got distracted and Usopp ended up hurt and then initially he wants to just stubbornly keep the Merry and Iceburg calls him out on (once again for Luffy in a short amount of time) putting his crew at risk and being a bad captain for doing so. So I think Luffy is trying to be the "good" captain, he just doesn't fully know how yet and Luffy is convincing himself as much as Usopp in the argument still that this is what needs to be done. But both just also aren't used to seeing the other that way. Usopp in the moment doesn't recognize the change Luffy is going through and I think Luffy also doesn't fully see the issue Usopp actually has isn't really just about the Going Merry. In a way it's extra tragic because they both worry about not fullfilling their roles for the crew and try to protect the other one from being subjected to respectively another reckless decision by the captain on Luffy's side and a useless crewmember that makes more trouble than it's worth on Usopp's side. It's why the fight feels so real and tragic. If they didn't worry about letting the crew and each other down, they woudln't even fight, but in the end the fight is what pushes them apart.

I don't really understand how anyone could side with Usopp in this arc. He was 100% in the wrong here. Luffy cared about the Merry just as much as Usopp did, but he was taking responsibility as captain and making the hard decision. Usopp made thoughtless accusations against Luffy and completely disrespected him as captain. Luffy wasn't being a jerk, he was just putting his foot down and refusing to tolerate Usopp's selfish and delusional behavior. (Edit) Glad to see you changed your mind. Still, I don't think I've ever seen anyone side with Usopp even at the beginning.

I think its a multiple of things. Luffy is still young and he's hurt leaving Merry behind too but it's the adult thing to do. It's the captain-like thing to do. Usopp is also young, has insecurities, and cares deeply for the Merry. He's also in denial of how badly Merry was damaged. Usopp definitely needed a more gentle announcement of the plan but it also showed how much he was disrespecting Luffy as a captain. He didn't trust in Luffy as much as he should've.
