Crying over a boat is a rite of passage. Welcome aboard! Enies Lobby truly hits different. But I assure you, this story only elevates as it goes on. Oda is a freaking genius. Did you catch the fact that the Aqua Laguna tide is connected to Long Ring Long Land? The water level goes down over there and rises in Water 7. Just a neat little world-building nugget. And also, Sogeking/Sniperking's identity has never been revealed. It's one of the biggest mysteries in One Piece.

Lucci's comment of wanting a certain idiot to learn a few things from him is referring to Spandam, who is an incompetent leader that Lucci is stuck under. Sanji's line to Usopp after he saves him from Jabura is not talked about enough. Him saying "I'll do whatever you cannot do,and you do what I cannot do" hits me right in the chest. He knows that Usopp was always a vital member of the crew, that he isn't just not useless, but quite literally the only guy that could save their friend's life. So impactful. Couple that with his line to Chopper in Water 7 that " a man forgives a woman's lies",because he sees that Robin is hurting just as Nami was when she was lying to herself and others in Coco Village, his infiltration on the train, his amazing one lines to Jabura, and he pretty much becomes the coolest guy alive. I have some probles with how Oda will treat him later, but here he pretty much cemented himself as my favourite in the crew. Also,it's very fun how,in a subversion of shonen tropes, the straw hats don't all fight their favourable "matchups" at the start, but Sanji,Nami and Usopp all have to tag someone else in in order to keep fighting for Robin. This does so much to add to their companionship, their synergy, and even the desperation of the whole ordeal. Chopper's fight is especially brutal, and the fact that he doesn't want to become a "monster" in front of the people he loves again, but ends up doing so because Robin needs them,is the peak of character moments. So good.

Just having a Devil Fruit doesn't necessarily make you a strong user/fighter. It's the way you apply your ability and your creativity with what you can do that makes a mediocre ability like "turns your body into rubber" into a strong ability. There is really nothing more to it at this point of the story other than Luffy getting more used to his powers and thinking about how to solve a problem (him being too weak to just punch through every enemy).

Mostly agreed 😁 the Dwarf Kingdom section (which is all I'll refer to it as so our boy doesn't get spoiled), although there were necessary plot points, could've and should've been handled better or even by going in a completely different path and set of characters to take care of the hanging plot threads before getting deeper into one of One Piece's longest Sagas. It damn near felt like filler content if it weren't for the fact that it carried a few necessary plot-lines forward.

@thedoctor3528 yeah, the Tontatta. It was my response to the statement saying "it's 'full speed ahead' from here!", when there are so many examples of "Run Piece" yet to come even though every major Saga usually ups the ante and somehow 'overall' surpasses the one before it, there are always moments like the Tontatta stuff that pop in and kill the pacing a little too often. I love and appreciate the lore exposition, monologues and world-building very much, so it's not that I'm one of those "fight freaks" that can't be bothered with story-craft. But, among any of the remaining time-sink, filler chapters/episodes/arcs, it is, and will likely always be, the Tontatta which I am completely unable to abide. Just one of those things that many readers, beyond myself alone, find completely grating.

@@iviui2d3i2i mostly meant "full speed ahead" about the summit saga, naturally the story slows down after 597 because its a restart of the story but it quicly gains pace back up with end of punk hazzard. Not only does Oda write backstories really well, but he chooses when to do them way better than anyone else I can think of. Many stories front load backstory and use it to establish the characters stakes and values, but Oda does that through "present day" events first and then drops the back story just before an emotional beat where either a deeper understanding of what we already know or a subversion of expectations will add an extra punch.

Luffy does briefly explain how he thought of Gear Second and Gear Third (they're that way round in the Japanese, not Second Gear) - when he lost to Aokiji, he thought of ways he could fight harder. He copied CP9's technique for moving fast by watching how they did it and just doing that himself. If you watch the 7th film, The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle (a film notable only for the music and the jiggle physics), there's a non-canon scene near the end where he unintentionally uses Gear Second for the first time.

A really great minor detail that you pick up on with re-reads is how much Oda will seed tiny pieces of dialogue that, when given context later, actually tells you a lot about the world. For instance, in Alabasta, one of the navy soldiers mentions that Robin got her bounty at age 8. The justification that the soldier has heard for this was that she "took out 8 battle ships at age 8." However, now that we know what happened, we know that one of the comanding officers at the O'hara buster call was actually the one to sink those battleships, because there "might be scholars hidden amongst them". This, obviously, didn't make it into the paper or become part of the world government's narrative, instead, the idea that Robin, the last surviving scholar of O'hara, was the one responsible for those sunken battleships, thus further justifying a 79 million beri bounty. Just one of the many ways that the world government is always trying to weave the narrative that they are the sole thing standing in the way of the world turning to absolute chaos when they're own violence and depravity is comstantly being used to fuck over not only pirates, but normal and otherwise peaveful folk all throghout the world.

The panel of merry arriving at enies lobby had got to be one of the most euphoric satisfying moment in all of fiction ever. I just love how everything in the arc was alluding to Merry being left behind, and the crew having to be more serious and Usopp feeling like he has to be "more than a friend" to stay in the crew. And Robin wanting to die. While those two things are ultimately correct, Oda then flips them on their heads. Robin being so desperate to live and what was it that saves the crew in the end? Usopp being Luffy's best friend, and the Going Merry.

Omg. I love this. But you know what? For me, you brought something new to the Usopp Water 7/Enies Lobby character growth analysis I’ve been trying so hard to search for and create. Therefore I must say, despite Usopp feeling like he has to be more than a friend to stay in the crew, I think his pursuit for meaning and purpose was important, because things were starting to change. The seasons were starting to change. And Usopp could still be a friend of the crew, but even he knew that things were getting a bit (a lot more) serious (he just didn’t communicate it properly and Merry having to be done away with manifested into something extreme and ugly). Usopp couldn’t be just a friend. He had to embody the purpose of a sniper and crew mate (on his own terms). Or he wouldn’t be able to keep up. He wanted to have something to show for and prove himself, and he did. Yet, overall, friendship won in the end despite a lot of resistance towards the idea of friendship. It was a lot of head over heart. And man, making those hard decisions hurt. Even when Zoro wanted Usopp to apologize, I think that was under the guise of asserting power roles and what have you, but maybe it really all went back to friendship and how Usopp hurt everyone’s feelings because of his actions, and Zoro really felt that, and couldn’t forget (Usopp was a friend to everyone). Usopp leaving for good would’ve destroyed everything. On top of that Robin was so resistant to the idea of friendship as well, and as you said it is what saved the day. (Okay, okay. I’m done. Your comment just inspired me. And there were other players besides Usopp. I know that 😅).

One Piece becomes increasingly more unpredictable. Making erroneous conclusions and predictions comes with the territory. I’ve been wrong about so many things, especially when I’m missing context and that’s completely acceptable, only difference is that my feelings and experiences are not under intense scrutiny on KZfaq. Watching someone experiencing this story for the first time and how they react to it as greater context is reveal, is why I watch reaction video. I think you’re doing a great job of expressing yourself in the most objective way possible and that is so great to witness! Love this

i love how at the end of zoros fight with kaku he brings up what paulie told him to tell cp9 " You're fired" and kaku seems somewhat remorseful of their betrayal. Wishfully he laments losing the job by stating that it's such a hard time finding work as an assassin, to which zoro says the fantastic line of "try a zoo"

Robin is my favorite character and "I want to live" is my favorite moment in the series. It makes me wattery eyed just thinking about it. And then everything going on with Usopp (my second favorite character) and culminating with making me cry over a drawing of a boat. The whole Water 7/Enies Lobby experience is just so fantastic.

The Gears are just applications of Luffy’s Devil Fruit power. When he first met CP9, he realised they were fighting by temporarly forcing their hearts to pump out more blood at once, allowing them to exhibit greater speeds (The Shave technique). The problem is they can only do it for a fraction of a second, since their hearts wouldn’t be able to withstand the strain. Since Luffy’s heart is rubber, he can abuse this by pumping up an outrageous amount of blood through his system, to the point that his temperature gets so high that steam begins coming off him. As Lucci calls it, it’s basically doping

that's wrong though. Soru is kicking the air repeatedly, it has NOTHING to do with pumping blood. Only Luffy's ability relates to that, there is no connection between soru and Gear 2.

Just wanted to mention that after the Thriller Bark arc is a film called Strong World. It was co-written by Oda himself and is confirmed to be canon. Now, you dont really have to watch this film if you dont want to (i still recommend it, its solid), but i do suggest reading the tie-in Chapter 0 at least. I think you can only find it in English online if youre okay with that.

When he says: "What it means for the Straw Hats Post-Enies Lobby, they are going to be the most wanted people in the world, maybe of all time, like above the level of someone like Roger" at around 14:00. As always, you're picking up on a lot. I love how close some of your theories are to the main fan theories we have on these subjects even in the current arc. One of my favorite things though, now that I'm rewatching the anime, is how many times I'm seeing foreshadowing on some of these mysteries. There are characters that much later on you find out they likely know the answers to all of it, and now rewatching it there are so many cryptic lines they had that make a ton of sense.

Talking about Merry, Did you catch the connection between the ghost thingy that fixed The Merry back in the Skypiea? It called "Klabautermann" and it's based on German folklore, I think? (CMIIW) As quoted from One Piece wiki: "A Klabautermann is said to be a water spirit (or fairy) that dwells in ships and is essentially an incarnation of a ship that has developed a life of its own due to being well loved and cared for. They are normally considered to be only a legend among seafarers." So, the ghost thingy that fixed Merry in Skypiea was Merry fixing herself so that she could help her crew travel the sea a little bit further. And, yea.. That made cry more when I re-read and watch the chapter/episode again. I mean, Oda-sensei how can you do this is beyond my mind. She's just a ship. A sheep. A ship sheep. tehee Thank you for your content though! I can't wait to see more of your reaction of more to come and seeing people (*esp you) reacting to it for the first time. Enjoy the voyage, nakama!

Ennies lobby is one of the best arcs in One piece. I really like your way of questioning things and making connections, not because you are correct, but you have the right mindset to go into this series!! The model in Robin's flashback is most likely not the solar system, but the One piece planet (it does have several moons, probably) and I've always thought the person Lucci refers to when he says "there is certain idiot i would like to hear that" is Spandam (meaning he would like him to see how a real "boss" should act) at least that's my headcanon.

2:38 all gears of Luffy are still his rubber ability. In Gear 2 Luffy pumps his blood which makes his metabolism faster making him fast too and loose energy faster, which is why he is hungry after using it. Because his internal organs are rubber too the extra fast blood flow doesn't make his body to burst.
