We're back at it again for round two of RV carpet removal. Today, we learn how to rip out the carpet around the toilet and stairs in our class c motorhome. We also have a tough time accessing the carpet in the cab area of our e350 because the driver's seat won't budge.
Toilet carpet is gross. BUT...it will be worth it in the end :) In future videos, you'll see us install beautiful hardwood floors that we recovered from the trash!
We're also surprised to find out what color the carpet used to be back in 1989. It's crazy what aging does to the color of carpet!
RENOVATION TIP:
Always wear gloves (learn from our mistakes). Use a hammer to get leverage when trying to remove stubborn carpeting around the stairs. Keep in mind that manufacturers really like to tack and glue down the high traffic areas (which is a good until you try to remove it). So bring your game face when starting this project!
A few reasons why removing carpet in an RV is more difficult than removing carpet in a house:
1. RV manufacturers install the carpet in the rig FIRST and then install appliances, fixtures, drawers, cabinets, etc. ON TOP of the carpet. This means you have to either remove every appliance that's screwed in and glued to the walls and floor or do what we did - use a carpet/utility knife to cut around the cabinets and appliances to get the carpet out.
2. Glue, tacks, and staples are used to fasten the carpet to the plywood subfloor.
3. You're doing all of this in an extremely small space.
You can do this! Good luck and happy renovating!

I've taken up carpet before and it is a tedious job. You guys figured out all of the correct tools and techniques. I have used a flat head screw driver under the tack/staples and then the needle nose pliers to pull it. And buy a LOT of blades for the knife.

I just started on my 87 Toyota Odyssey and you 2 have a lot of the same issues I have so your videos are really going to boost my confidence. I have never ripped one of these apart myself and have no resources to rely on out here, the hubby has stepped back in fear, :LOL! I will be spending many nights viewing the vids as that's my free download time. Happy Trails you 2!!

Use a large flat bar to take up the carpet that has too may fasteners in it. Or a crpte stretching chisel. Must faster.

Did you guys have carpet under the shower? Or did you just cut around the shower? I’m currently working with carpet under our shower. (gotta love the 90’s) with the amount of mold we’ve found just in the bedroom, we definitely want to get under there and replace with marine plywood to prevent any molding. Any suggestions or tips will be appreciated

I ripped out carpet in 2 mobile homes, what a job. The carpet was laid before the walls and cabinets were ever placed. I acquired a carpet knife used by the pros. Made life safer and easier. Nice heavy duty pliers and hammer where my option to help ripping it out. A zillion tacks and staples must have added 100 lbs to the place. What a mess and lots of very hard work. There is nothing funny about it for sure. Will never attempt it again. I loved the laminate replacement, so easy to care for.

I have a 1994 class A motorhome do you have any detailed videos or input that I can absorb information wise and what to do about my step into the RV area I only have one door you step up on the menu step up again my batteries are underneath there's a panel that slides out with metal but the actual area for the door entry I'm a loss for ideas I'm a mechanic not a carpenter a lot of people are doing the entire floors but they kind of leave what they did for that area out plus when you get up to the my passenger and driver seat area see you have a class c RV everything's black well where my seats are they're raised about 6 in up on a wooden platform and I got a very unique contoured dog house what kind of ideas can I take and use for the material I can put on the dog house and the front of that raised area you know the vertical what do I put there I'm lost and I'm asking a lot of people a lot of questions and nobody's responding I can send pictures if you need to what I'm up against but here in 2 weeks I've already pulled my carpet out I'm replacing the entire sub for I'm not taking everything out I'm cutting around a lot of things but I'm putting in new stuff for wood and then I'm putting in a floating floor wood or plank flooring so the entryway and the captain's chairs area I'm kind of scratching my head going or what do I do please help and I hope my messages are readable cuz I don't proofread my messages so if there's words in there that don't belong I will read verify what I'm trying to ask if you respond lot of people aren't responding oh well have a great day

omg carpet by the toilet. Just doesn't sound like a good idea. No way to wipe up that if someone misses. Or honestly even know if they missed because the carpet would soak it up.... yikes.
