We are dedicated to showing you both the good and the bad times throughout this renovation. Today’s video is no exception. Resealing the RV exterior was a monster project! From start to finish, this project was challenging both mentally and physically.
One reason why it was so difficult is we needed to completely remove and clean off the old silicone sealant before we replaced it with a much more impressive and durable product. The old silicone was crumbly and brittle and came off one speck at a time. When you have to remove every inch of silicone from around each door, window, light, and every nook and cranny of the rig, it’s a test of perseverance and patience. 28 feet never seemed so big!
The new product we chose to replace the silicone is called OSI Quad*. It's a multi-purpose SOLVENT BASED caulking that has excellent flexibility and weather resistant properties. We highly recommend because it is very easy to find and is relatively inexpensive (approx. $6 a tube at your local home improvement store). If you are looking for a more clean look to your rig, definitely go with the CLEAR color! The white was very hard to work with and may look better on an all white RV.
*Make sure that you use this type of caulking on the EXTERIOR ONLY. This product does have some strong fumes until it fully cured and should only be used in a well ventilated area.
We've also had a few people asking about the natural bug spray (non-toxic) that we used for both ourselves and the dogs. Here it is...
1/2 cup distilled water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
50 drops of essential oil - We used a combination of tea tree, lemongrass, and rosemary (You can also use lavender, peppermint, or citronella).

Wish I saw this sooner. Quad is a awesome product, used it for years installing residential Windows. WD-40 on your finger will make your lines smooth when you wipe the excess caulking off, you can mask off everything with a 1/4' gap away from the seams and get a nice line that way. Always pull your tape before anything drys, immediately after you're done with the area.

Yeah, looking back, we totally should have done that :-( bummer. #newbiemistake for sure! But, it does do the job that it was intended to so that's always a plus haha.

usually spraying it with soapy water and either use a finger or a teaspoon to force the caulking in the groove and smooth it at the same time putting painterstape on both sides and pulling it off right after smoothing and then go over it with the finger / spoon again gives the straightest lines

Thank you much for the video! We are currently dealing with water coming in through one of our hallway windows in our Tiffin. I was looking all over for how to seal it and some people said they didn't recommend caulking and some did recommend it. But after seeing this I will caulk it for sure, I think I might take your approach and just do it all at one time also. Thanks again for the vid!

Sweet! It's a tough job but well worth it! Make sure to read all of the comments and suggestions on the video. Lot's of people gave us some great "hindsight" information on how to make it look more clean (taping off a quarter inch). We definitely still recommend the OSI Quad, though. It's awesome stuff! Good luck with the reseal!

Don't lose heart I had to reseal my RV and as a single woman it was my first time attempt. The hole I cut in the sealant was a little too big and if I had cut a smaller hole I would have had more control and when smoothing it afterwards it would have made a thin line not a wide crooked one. So I had the same trouble and just want to say I love your WHO CARES LETS DO IT! attitude. I need to replace ceiling paneling and wall paneling from roof leaks and after seeing the great job you did I can't wait to jump in with both hands. : )

For silicone sealer, dish soap and water is it. I caulk tile lines in "portable" spas. Also, milk jugs cut at many of the various curves available, make a trowel of any geometry. Acetone as prep cleaner. Use one small bead of sealer, forcing sealer into crevasses and touching both sides, with trowel dipped in dish soap solution. Painter's low tack tape can be used as a clean outside border on flats (can be used on corrugated walls with practice; touching tape to undulating surface).

yayy haha love these videos!!! I jst bought a vintage .camper and we had our first summer rainstorm here in Florida annndd we have few leaks around the Windows and door... I've waterproof wood stained / killzed all the wood, ( to kill the mold n to jst to protect it in the mean time ) Now I'm preparing to locate the leak, reseal the window and Dicor the roof!! The foundation of it is pretty solid so hopefully from more of ur videos and some help along the way. I can find the things I need! So far I've discovered the Etnernabond Tape,Dicor sealant and many other recommendations for products!! Your videos have made me smile and feel so inspired, thank you so much!! All the amazing insight for the newbies has been truly knowledgeable! I'm grateful for to have found ur. channel!! Best Wishes and Safe Travels!

Cut the caulk in a small hole at the right angle. Use less, finer lines and be very gentle wiping it with your finger. I like to wear gloves and wipe finger on a paper towel to keep clean. Working in small sections and smoothing as I go. I watched a video from a professional and a lot of experience. Practice makes perfect!

What I do when I do caulking is use painters tape. I put it around my work area. Then you can put your caulking on smooth it out. Then pull your tape off and you'll have a nice edging on your caulking.

Next time take some masking tape and place it about a 1/4 inch from where you want caulk. Caulk your seams and remove the tape. You'll have nice clean straight lines every single time. And plain water would be better than soapy water.

I watched all your videos a year ago when I first subscribed, and now that we are up to date (as of Nov 2017) and you are no longer posting weekly videos, I decided to go back and rewatch your renovation videos. It's kind of amazing how much you did given how little you knew at the time. I am curious to know how your sealing job fared. You both beat yourselves up too much over the caulking at the time and I wondered how well it actually sealed your RV. Did it manage to keep the water out of your home?

Put an arrow bead of cocking down take a spray gun with soapy water and remove excess the soapy water will not allow it to stick to any area that originally hadn't touched. An auto body shop can show you this quite easily if you're not sure. A little goes a long way. Make sure to use the right product as well. Manufacturers haven't sealants list specific to your model and areas that need to be sealed multiple products. one product does not do the job for everything
