His son Prince William was the only Royal to have a diplomatic career and flew his own plane to Tokyo, Japan a 16 hour flight. He was the most interesting royal, he looked like a movie star, was very intelligent and spoken many languages. Ironically he had to end his Civil Career and a woman he loved because of the monarchy and because Hus Father had suffered a stroke. He died at 29 years of age in a flight competition on August 28, 1972. Prince Charles named his first son William in his honor.

It is amazing that someone who died at the age of 74 is the "longest surviving" anything. The men in that family tend to die young, while the women (e.g. Victoria, Elizabeth II) live "forever."

Interesting fact about the Duke's widow...like Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, she also lived to see her 100th birthday. Amazing that two women who married brothers both survived for over a century.

Yep Princess Alice passed away in 2004, 2 years after her friend and sister in law, the Queen Mum. Queen Elizabeth was said to be very saddened by the passing of her last surviving aunt. Her uncle the Duke of Gloucester was the last surviving child of King George V and Queen Mary of Teck and had been a loyal and supportive younger brother to the future queen's father when he was King George VI. The Duke of Gloucester's older son Prince William was tragically killed in 1970 and his young cousin Prince Charles named his own son William in his honor and memory.

No, I don't think he has been in the military. He is an architect by profession. He was the youngest grandchild of King George V and is now 76. He has a lovely Danish wife, Birgitte van Deurs (m. 1972-present), Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester. He represented Her Majesty at the burial of King Richard III in Leicester Cathedral Richard, of the House of York was also Duke of Gloucester at one time.

I think his older brother, William, did have military training. William was expected to get the dukedom, but died before his father. Hence why Richard has it. He’s done well. Both he and his wife carry out their duties quietly and aren’t known for scandal.

From what I had read, the Duke of Gloucester would have been Regent for then-Princess Elizabeth had she become Queen while still a minor.
@rickardnyberg4899
@rickardnyberg4899 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's very likely. According to the Regency Act of 1937 (wich is still in force) the closest adult in the line of sucession (The Duke of Gloucester) would have been appointed regent in her name and the closest living relative (Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) would have been appointed her legal guardian... Interestingly in 1953, the government made an additional law that stated if Prince Charles would come to the throne as a minor, The Duke of Edinburgh would become Regent in his name. He would have been appointed Charles' legal guardian anyway , but the government didn't trusted Princess Margaret very much so they made sure Prince Philip would be acting as regent too if he was still alive. That law ceased to have effect when all 4 children of Elizabeth and Philip reached adulthood.

@@shirtless6934 Margaret was old enough, being 22-23 at the time, but she wasn't as serious as her sister and had even less education (the Queen had at least studied the Constitution and some history). Margaret was not exactly known as a nose-to-the-grindstone kind of person. And it would have been a long regency (in 1953 Charles was 4--5, so at the VERY least we're talking 10 years). I can't see Margaret wanting the job at any rate.

Not quite hidden away. I know The Lost Prince was very good, I've got it on DVD, but it isn't the whole story. According to a documentary a few years back Prince John regularly saw his parents and he also saw the families of people who worked in the royal households and had friends amongst them. One person in the documentary, someone who had known Prince John when they were both children, was very upset by the way The Lost Prince misrepresented the situation and was adamant Prince John was not shut away. He was even seen in public with family members many times and the royal archives has photos to prove it. Epilepsy wasn't understood in those days and a seizure in public might have been received badly by the public at that time, but it isn't quite as black and white as saying Prince John was shut away and ignored by his family.

The Duke of Gloucester's Funeral was not a State Event. Except for the military procession through Windsor and the televised service in St George's Chapel, it was all private. The Queen allowed some parts to be public to aknowledge uncle Henry's long life in public service under 4 monarches. We don't know what type of Funeral Service The Duke of Edinburgh will have. Rumours says he has requested a Private Military Funeral at St George's Chapel (much like this was) but it's all unconfirmed rumours by journalists.

Prince Philip has already made it known that he wants a private funeral: I think he will have something along the lines of Princess Margaret's funeral in 2002. My feeling is that he would want to spare the Queen from having to go through a public ceremony at such a time. He is a down to earth man. I think a private funeral would be appropriate for him.
