Scotland is said to have some of the most concentrated land ownership in the developed world. It’s estimated that fewer than 500 people own half the country’s privately-owned rural land.
But how does land ownership affect our lives and is it important who the land belongs to?

I can see why Scottish people would feel nervous at the least at the amount of outsiders "owning" Scottish land at least those outside GB and N Ire. At least the Danish guy wants to preserve it tho.

"Preserve" it from serving the daily needs of the local people, which forces those people to import goods from overseas (which additionally causes pollution from the shipping involved) and work in low-wage jobs because they can't live off the land. Land doesn't rightly belong to anyone. It belongs to everyone, equally. Everyone should have a stake in all the land and be given the profits caused by the bounty of both nature and social cooperation. That would encourage entrepreneurship, conservation, and stewardship throughout the population, and realize the dream of automation giving us free time.

Go back 500 years(or wherever and whenever in history) and you'll find a divide between people living on the land and people who 'own' the land. Always been this way, most aristocrats are foreign.

Kevin Morgan The Scottish did win in Braveheart. And it would have made a difference if they lost. Ireland lost all its land in similar conquests and look at the horrific famines that happened has a result of it. Scotland was able to join the U.K. as a proportionally equal partner, that’s why they were wealthy in the 1700’s and 1800’s and that is why they are still there today unlike Ireland.

it's better to have lots of land in one portfolio because dividing up the land can be very uneconomical and not environmentally friendly.. just drive through rural ireland and you'll see why.

@@Artur-hg1qg yes but by the time it would be regulated enough so that prices couldnt be given up and there was 1 house per person there would be no need for landlords, the only thing they do is make passive income of people who just want a house ot live in, maybe if they rented out a bit of their own house to a temporary guest but forcing someone to pay for accommodation for what could be their entire life doesnt seem good. by buying up properties to rent to people you are not providing a service but simply making yourself into a middleman so you can make money off people. idk

@Kes Montana Well, I was told a neighbouring field was going up for sale in 6 months time, but it was snapped up by a wealthy landowner before it even went on the market (2 weeks after I was told about it in fact). So it's not always a case of having ourselves to blame - not when pieces of land can change hands before locals have a chance. So much for this land act.

The people of Scotland are legally sovereign and so sovereigns legally own the kingdom of Scotland. Which is why there is no English style law of trespass in Scotland and people have legal right to roam. There are, of course conditions to the right to roam. Personal privacy is protected and that means you cannot roam in close proximity to a dwelling and you can trespass on such as railway lines and MOD property but I suspect these have more to do with personal safety and danger. It is a modern law that no private person can clamp or two away a vehicle parked on private land and demand payment for its return from the owner as they can do in the Kingdom of England. It is probably like other legal matters - full of grey areas.

Its a work in progress. The highlands are pretty sterile, it shouldn't look as it currently does. There should be more biodiversity, broad leaf trees and animals but the land is kept barren for sport shooting by the few who own the large estates or littered with non native Scandinavian pines for timber that support hardly any animals. There is a land tax being debated in Holyrood at the moment that would slowly tax the rich per acre of land they own making it a poor investment to continue to hold money in large land ownership here. We then get first rights to buy land back for those of us who live here full time and we can return en masse back to our highland homes making it anew :)

Are you forgetting that Scotland voted majority remain? The SNP wouldn't be campaigning for remain if Scotland voted to leave. They do what the people vote for, simple as that. technically, yes... I think she is the World's largest. It's all technicalities though. The Crown, is ultimate landowner, or Crown Land. The Monarch at the time made a deal with Parliament to hand over revenues in exchange a fixed civil list payment which is now the sovereign grant I think.

This BBC is pure propaganda. Surprised they did not mention Trumps golf courses. Most of Scotlands land has been in the same family for hundreds of years. Isle of Skye for example. The MacLeods of Skye built their castle over 800 years ago and have lived in it ever since. Fought every since war and battle there has ever been. They own that island and no communist socialist SNP government can take the land from the rightful owners.

This has been like this all over Europe for centuries. The Monarchs and Oligarchs owned all the land and used the peasants for slave labor. That's why many Scots and other peoples fled to America where they could have their own farms. In Canada, a dominion of the Monarchy, the Queen owns 89% of the land still today. I think they call it crown land or something of the sort. Anytime they cut timber from the land, they have to pay the Queen.
