The story James Best told was he wanted a dressing room. No one had one and he just wanted one that everyone could use rather than having to change behind props. The producers refused and he left the show resulting in the "sheriff of the week". It was Sorrell Booke that finally went to the producers and told them he couldn't play off any of these actors they were bringing in and to get Best to come back. Best and Booke worked very well together. They loved sitting at a read and would just improvise off the top of their heads and a lot of that would end up being on the show.

These opening variations from season 2. First it was Ben Jones as Cooter left temporarily over rather about being clean shaved or with a beard. Then James Best as Roscoe left over not having his own dressing room. He was mostly forced to change in the men's room. His character Roscoe P Coltrane left for the Police Academy in Atlanta for more training.

I remember watching these variations as they originally aired and being a little freaked out by the sudden changes to the opening without Cooter and Roscoe. But overall they were welcome changes and added some nice variations to the already familiar opening scenes.

The biggest mistake was bringing the show back to California full-time after some of the S1 episodes were done in Georgia. All to save money. No wonder there were internal conflicts from S2 onwards & cast members disappearing for variable amounts of time.

The General Lee also saw all episodes but 1 season 1 Mary Kays baby they drove the blue Plymoth entire show :-) Dukes of Hazzard my all time fav show never gets old watch em on CMT

Sorrel Booke was actually a very accomplished actor and highly educated, graduated from Columbia and Yale. Spoke 12 languages fluently and dabbled in several others. Nothing at all like Boss Hogg. Also wasn’t nearly as fat, wore padding to look that obese.

I loved the new Daisy Duke Part with her in that low cut outfit, when the singer talks about flattening the hills. LOL and the part where she kicks Boss Hogg from her bed. I seem to remember that part. something about he returned to the wrong bedroom. it was funny. sh looked great in the nitey.

I actually liked Sheriff Grady Bird. He was Sheriff, for two weeks.

u know the scene where Boss hogg got ran down by the police car that was actually rosco in the driver seat but they replaced him with enos in the intro u see here

@snoops71 As with Ben Jones, there was a dispute with the producers, this time involving the shabby dressing room accommodations, which were barely livable. Again, this was eventually resolved, and Rosco returned.

Sheriff Lester Crabb did not either, I don't remember the actors name but he was older. I have the series on DVD so I could look it up or google it.

@snoops71 James Best had also been upset about there being no dressing rooms on the set either.

James Best had those issues with regards to the lack of dressing room accommodations and such,but Ben Jones didn't,or as far as I know,he didn't.

I heard about James Best not being happy with the scripts, but I didn't know Ben Jones had problems, too. What was wrong? Did they want the show to go back to its original format, before it became "kid friendly"? So, was Dick Sargent set to be the permanent replacement for Roscoe? I've seen the episode he was in. He was pretty funny.

I was 7-11 years old when DOH aired every Friday night. My favorite part was the smooth intro either the bass guitar and the jump from the underside of the car.

And Dick Sargent, formerly Darrin Stephens, God rest him, isn't helping matters.

Dick Sargent & James Hampton were both well established actors and either one of them would have been suitable long term replacements for James Best.

i absolutely refuse to this day to watch this season because of James' departure. he was my favorite on the show and if he wasn't there, then i had no reason to watch

I'm wondering right now....... Who was in charge of editing that particular season intro? All of those intros for season 2 of TDOH show “Boss Hogg” munching some spare ribs as he addresses some side business. Besides i don't remember any episodes with Dick Sargent (from “Bewitched”, of course) replacing James Best as the County's sheriff. Did i miss something there? #PleaseConfirm

@snoops71 Ben Jones left for a few episodes because of a dispute over the producers over whether Cooter should have a beard or not. Since the end result was Cooter being clean-shaven, I guess this is what Ben Jones wanted, while the producers wanted him to keep the beard. As for Dick Sargent, he was actually in 2 episodes, compared to just one for the other Rosco replacements, so I guess you could say he was the preferred choice.

The second Sheriff was Lester Crabb (Clifton James) the second wa Grady Byrd (the late Dick Sargent from Bewitched) and the fourth was Buster Moon (James Hampton from The Longest Yard). The first one was his idiot nephew Hughie Hogg (Jeff Altman)

Ben Jones cause he wouldnt shave . And James Best Rosco missed few cause they wouldnt give him his own dressing set. John Schnieder missed couple episodes in season 3 and 6 ba ba black sheep and couple season 6 they should him at end of 1 was just luke of course season 5 bo and luke both left but came back I looked it up other day Boss Hogg and Uncle Jesse and Waylon are only ones who was on every episode of all 7 seasons of The Dukes of Hazzard dasiy missed to catch a duke season 3
