I love modelling and came to believe I was decent at it. Watching your work brought home the harsh reality that I am shit at modelling.

This is incredible throughout! I made an e-RC version about 10 years ago.. I forgot how painstaking these damn things are... Doing this via stop-motion really presents the hobby perfectly! Your eye for detail is appreciated.

Dang man! This is excellent video! I could watch your videos all day! The Storch is one of my all time favs. I built an electric 48" ish foam board Storch kit from Flite test and this baby will take off in 2 feet! It will fly with complete authority at a very slow walk speed, or hover in a small breeze, and then can go unlimited vertical! I have it equiped with flaps, ailerons, rudder, elev, as will as the most important part ... The Spoiler flaps on the leading edge!!!! Please keep up

This particular model from Dumas is a great flyer as we've had several club members fly them. Minute and a half flights are normal. Good show, Tom!

Remarkably and phenomenally, after discovering this new (old) re-emergence of 21st century freeflight historical replica aviation and modeling, I thought of the Storch, the most airworthy machine I've ever seen manufactured in such high production numbers and immediately and only used briefly and militarily and yet entirely too, a breakthrough in precision aviation - in any form. Freeflight plus the Storch airframe supplies and combines ALL the original designer knew and used. The freeflight/designer builder simply translates these seminal set of highly developed numerical relationships and applies these to the new mission of sustained freeflight, bounded here by reduction in scale and available material. And MORE! This delightful video is a priceless and peerless gem that wondrously shows and demonstrates the invisible, satisfactions available to every designer/builder/observer of such historical replication freeflight aircraft. A kick-ass Storch aircraft AND video come to life here, (like watching the time-lapse hatching of a chick from an egg) are marvelous products and productions combined! That's really hard to do and yet done here, outta the goodness of this guy's heart alone and irrational passion for the phenomena that abound in freeflight.

Head over to www.freeflight.org and browse through their technical section - check out the 'beginners' section for some great starter info. I spotted some obvious warping in the wing in the end section of the video. This plane will make a great static display but won't fly. I know, I've built my fair share just like it when I started out! Maybe this is redundant info and you've already learned this since posting, so forgive me if it's duplicitous. Some items to jump start building models that will actually fly: 1. Building board must be absolutely flat. Kits of various types are available such as steel plate with magnets, pin friendly polymers, etc can be purchase or use of foam insulating sheets on top of any flat surface (secure with tape) and work extremely well. 2. Make your own square jigs to ensure complete alignment of parts BEFORE gluing the fuselage, wing (and wing sections), and empennage. 3. Mix aliphatic glue with 50% thinner, brush on parts before placing in the jig, then tack glue with super thin 'super glue' on key parts to hold the entire structure together allowing the aliphatic glue to dry. This keeps the weight of the finished airframe to a minimum. 4. Lightly sand the entire structure separately before covering. If using dope, apply 50% thinned dope to entire structure, let dry, and sand again. 5. Pre-shrink the tissue coverings with a mist of water. It helps to place the tissue in jig similar to the old wooden tennis rackets used to prevent warping. Just clamp, mist, and let dry. Another technique is to wad the tissue into a ball, spread it out, and then mist; no need for a jig. This prevents warping of the wing and empennage after applying the tissue. 6. Build a very small wash out on the trailing edge tips of the wing. This helps stabilize small FF planes in flight. Use 1/32" to 1/16" scrap on a kit of this size. 7. Balance the finished project WITH the rubber motor in place. Use modeling clay to get the CG (build a jig!) on the plans correct before test flights. 8. Trimming is a process and a bit of magic art as there are many variables. The free flight.org site will have ample resources to assist in this part. When it all comes together, you'll have an even greater video subject to post!

First, Tom: My undying gratitude for this video. . .it's saved me from several mistakes and generally made my build much, much more pleasant. Secondary benefit: My 'puter is in the study and my workshop in the shed, so I got plenty of exercise too !! I think I did something stupid, but wanted to confirm. I am new to this and assumed the rubber motor should be only one loop, so I cut it and tied it off. No sooner had I done this than I realized it was probably intended to be doubled back so there would be a double loop. Am I correct?

What is instead of wood you could make those parts and all parts from paper? The landing gear wire could stay and also the prop and windows. It would be a complete paper aircraft. That would put this over the top model way over the top. The tops of others also. Great video and beautiful model. Outstanding craftsmanship. wc

When I built balsa kits years ago, I would use Elmers Blue school glue, which worked well. Doesn't seem to be around anymore. Noticed Elmers clear school glue... Same stuff , just different color ?
