Watching this scene as a kid, it was merely a goofy and funny moment. Now as an adult, it is a legitimately touching and emotional scene even with the humorous hyperbole. This is a scene of two friends who decide to bank it all on a gamble, a one way trip into the unknown and where Harry decides to put his own desire on hold so he can help his friend fulfill his own. As silly as the movie is, it is actually a great portrayal of two true friends in a world where such people are a rarity.

I still remember vividly seeing for the first time that moment (4:00) when Jim Carrey turns toward the camera and says with such heartbreak, "I'm sick and tired of having to eke my way through life... ." When this move came out, I knew him only from wacky Ace Ventura and The Mask, yet here he was bearing his soul better than many "serious" dramatic actors. It was and is simply an astonishing scene -- beautiful in its absurdity and candor -- not to mention a goldmine of hilarious one-liners for teenagers to endlessly repeat.
@johnnygunzfilmbuff78214 жыл бұрын
Jim Carrey is a good method actor. Watching that scene when he talks about how he's not happy with his life. It shows Jim Carrey could be dramatic actor if he wanted to be.

He's tired of having nobody - and from the movie, he marries Lauren Holly and that marriage lasts about a year, and then she divorces him. Hollywood is FAKE - and so are the people working there. Jim Carrey is an innovator and comedic risk-taker. Sometimes he is so bonkers and off the wall, it shocks people. He also deals with Manic Depression. Something his partners have had a difficult time dealing with. Let's pray he survives Hollywood's culture of fake and plastic people and finds his true soul mate before the all the "women that instinctively flock like Salmon of Capistrano" are out of reach!
@MatthewdePaula3 жыл бұрын
@@moiseshernandez9624 Agreed. And I'd go so far as to say that Daniels is underrated in the entire movie--or at least he was by me when I was younger, having been so dazzled by Carrey. Now I totally get his brilliance.

This movie is a classic and does something that most modern comics fail to do: make us care. Modern comedies mostly suck and are filled with unlikable, unrealistic characters that could get shot halfway through the movie and we wouldn't give a damn. Harry and Lloyd are idiots but they're overall decent guys who are believable (yes trust me, I've worked with the general public for years and there are people I've met who are indeed as dumb and even dare I say dumber than these two). There are a handful of serious moments that establish the characters. So many great classic comedies do this, whether it's Coming to America, Planes/Trains/Automobiles and Dumb and Dumber.

@tjchillot3 жыл бұрын
Jeff Daniels said in an interview that Jim Carrey had to fight to get Jeff Daniels in the movie. The studio wanted another comedian, but Carrey felt another comedian would just try to show him up, always try to be funnier. Carrey wanted an actor, someone who could help build up moments like these. The studio, not wanting to piss of the then highest paid actor, reluctantly agreed. But they weren’t going to offer Daniels the part and just let him have it. They began shooting the Aspen Scenes first and gave Daniels a weekend to find his groove with Jim Carrey, the studio sitting back and letting it happen but having replacements on standby. Daniels, obviously, knocked it out of the park and we got the classic we all know and love.

There is something really touching about this scene. They are in a deep enough shit already, but Harry is willing to sink even deeper for the (quite literal) one in a million chance of Lloyd becoming happy. That's love. You know, things like that. Lloyd may be a lovable goofball, but he is DEFINITELY an asshole.

This is my favorite scene of the whole movie. It's the moment where these guys become underdogs and you really get behind them. Even though the main plot of the movie is to return a briefcase (and Lloyd to find love) it's much more than that. It's about these guys trying to start their lives over. Harry and Lloyd hit rock bottom. They had no money, jobs, and lived in a shitty apartment. Aspen was their promised land, sort to speak. Even though the movie is filled with mindless humor (and damn good mindless humor at that!) it's moments like this where the heart of the movie really shines. I think we all had moments where our lives aren't where we want them to be, and the idea of packing up and leaving is really appealing to us.

just the sheer mood established by Loyd falling to his knees, the fact that he was betrayed by an old lady he considered to be trustworthy, and the breaking point that he and Harry reach when they realize that they are losing the battle of life at every turn. man it’s a very deep moment for them which is what makes it such a believable turning point in their story.

I love how he says this is the last of our money so only get the essentials. So he chooses booze as the most essential, then when he gets back carrying nothing, Harry is expecting booze, so they were both on the same page about essentials haha 😂

One of the most poignant scenes in cinematic history,this establishes our bond with the characters as status anxiety/social anxiety is something that resonates with all of us.The yearning to love and be loved,the fear of the future and frustration with the present,everyone has felt these emotions and Carrey brilliantly portrays this in a truly heart breaking scene.A classic for the ages!

It was said that when Jim Carey said ( in the movie) “I’m sick and tired of having to eek my way through life.” That actual tears were in his eyes
@ScottDaddyMac2 жыл бұрын
From the 4 minute mark to 4:30 mark, you knew that Jim Carrey was a damn good actor that could absolutely do dramatic roles. I remember thinking that the first time I saw this movie in the theater. Then it alllllllllllll goes away during his insane sobbing into Harry's chest. lol What a great movie.

Gosh that part where Lloyd goes to the window and says he’s sick and tired of everything. Man. What a powerful piece. Definitely not what I was expecting from a brainless comedy. This had heart and emotion. Although this movie was really stupid and funny this scene nailed an emotional string within me. It snapped and now I return to this scene years later. Wow. What a piece of art

Thinking of Jim Carrey's past it is no surprise how he perfectly delivered the part. He actually talked of his own life there. No acting. I am so happy for the hard working man.
