Why didn't I enjoy this movie? The biggest problem with this movie was the rendition of Chani. This version of Chani is everything that is wrong with female characters today. She was stupid, petulant, one dimensional, non-feminine and just out of place and annoying.

Could I also bitterly complain about when in the movie Jessica vomited … Jessica, a Bene Gesserit, could not control her bodily functions and actually vomitted!!!!!!!!!🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I was instantly worried from that moment on!!

Bruh!!!!! You are not lying about that one. She was weak in both films. She didn't have that much screen time so I could overlook a lot of her reinterpretations. Bene Gesserit can turn poison into wine but this chick can't hold down a happy meal.

I thought the change to Chani was actually smart. The movie, much like the Lynch movie, was conveying Paul as the "Great White Hope". I thought a sharp contrast had to be drawn to make sure the movie doesn't become that. Having his intimate partner at odds with his ascension helps correct the narrative onto the path of a faux messiah starting an atrocious war.

The book respects the intelligence of its readers by being far more subtle so we slowly come to the realization ourselves , the transition from hero to tyrant is therefore insidious as it often is in real life where both the population and outsiders realize far to late!!!

Would you say the same if it was instead Stilgar who had been skeptical of, and eventually opposed, Paul? It would still be the same radical change from the book, and serve the same narrative purpose.
@tgj251

@@gabrielmeth4844 No, i wouldn't say the same. Stilgar and Chani were the ones drawing that contrast. One being the zealot the other being the doubter. This was adapted to convey this message in movie form. Book doesn't have a time constraint.

I don’t think race will be what is now 20,000 years in the future. Phrases like “Great White Hope,” have no place in a discussion of Dune.

It's ok if you didn't pay for this "bullsh**", I paid 8 times to see it and I bought the blue ray, so it doesn't matter. What bothers me is people like you who lecture people pretending they (really) understand the book. A thousand people can read a book and you can have a thousand interpretations of that book. That's the beauty of reading. This is Denis Villeneuve's interpretation and frankly I find it to be an amazing one. I invite you to make your own version of the book into a movie.. I'm sorry but I believe it would suck.. Movies need good directors, which you are not, to make something people will enjoy, and it needs to make money too, that's just the reality of it. Like it or not Dune 2 was a success on all front. You may not like it, but you're in the minority on this one. By the way I don't think you know the definition of the word feminist.. unless criticizing religious beliefs is considered feminism...

Cool, you liked the movie so much that you paid to see it 8 times. I’m glad that you enjoyed it. What I don’t understand for the life of me is why my opinion matters to you so much? This video isn’t a lecture, it is an opinion. You liked it, I did not, no harm done and end of story. At the end of the day we are both sharing our opinions publicly so why is that you have a problem with “people like me” opining about it because based on your response it is clear that if I loved the movie then I would be one of the “people like you…” instead the “other… disagreeable…” person that you’ve described based on my opinion about this movie. As far as the definition of feminist…. Look to the modern iterations of it and how it is practiced and you we see the masculine implementation of feminism as was described in the video.

Thanks for coming. Early on and throughout the video I stated that Chani ruined the entire movie so why would not be lamenting her 20 minutes in. Are you complaining that I stayed on subject? The bloody war that you are talking about was the Golden Path that Paul did not fully see and was avoiding. Leto the 3rd took up the task that his father avoided and thereby became the true Kwizats Haerach and took the form of a mutant sand worm for 3500 years as God Emperor thereby setting humans on the Golden path as a tyrant and avoiding human self-destruction. None of that happens unless Paul and Chani has children.

And yes "zesty" stomp out of room was an eye roll moment for sure. Thank you for adding your perspective as a reader of the material.🔥👏🏾🔥👏🏾🔥

Zendaya was poorly cast and poorly written as Chani. And I know everyone loves Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica. Who while encompassing the fierceness of Lady Jessica, she lacked the regality. And what’s with the Princess Irulan, one of my favorite characters in the book, being The Reverend Mother’s best student? Irulan was a middling Bene Gesserit at best, which is why I love her

The way i see it, most of the fremen rituals were cut because of the movie length. Chani change was nessesary in order to make us see the tyranical and manipulative dictator Paul really is. The change of her character is as well the reason for the other changes in some of the characters dynamics in order for the movie to make sense. Someone this close to him rejecting his actions really cracks his almost godlike persona and gives us different prespective to his character.
@deadsetanime7102

That’s fair for people who have not read the series. I would even agree if Villenue took a softer approach to Chani in having her resist while staying in character. In such a way her personality could have been preserved as well as being the voice reason against a charismatic tyrant. Paul however, though manipulative, was not a tyrant in book or movie. His problem was that he didn’t go far enough because of his reluctance and Chani was central to that. Such is why Leto III took up the mantle and became the tyrant.
@bigsmalltanker
@bigsmalltanker 26 күн бұрын
@@deadsetanime7102 Although i mostly agree with you, Paul is an oppresive ruler. It can (as well as almost every real historical event) be debated if his actions were for the greater good or not, depending from how far away in the future you look at the events. No matter all that, fact stands that he spread tyranny towards his enemies. I also agree about the softer approach to Chani, and my theory is that in the future, as a part of her character development, she will become more alike Chani from the books, probably not supporting but understanding Paul's actions. The main reason i love Dune is because of it's ideas to not trust heroes/leaders, follow your own judgment and that more often than not, power is obtained throughout hurting people. I think the first two movies are a good start and really hope that Villenue will manage to fully convey these ideas in the third movie.

That's true, Villanueve has even said so himself. But was it actually necessary? The issue here is that it's inconsistent with his approach to the first movie and what seems to be his general philosophy - trusting the audience. It's as if he's suddenly stopped trusting his audience while making Dune 2, as if he thought we wouldn't be able to infer from Chalamet's acting or the overall tone of the movie that Paul was becoming a darker character and that this ending is not, in fact, a hero moment for him. The changes to Chani's character didn't serve to underline that point - they shifted the narrative focus, thereby detracting from it. A crying shame, really, because Chalamet absolutely nailed the transformation and the vibe of the ending was almost perfect. And they robbed us of that very poignant moment between Jessica and Chani (as Deadset Anime mentioned), Jessica's iconic quote from the books which is absolutely essential to both of their characters.

Great review Deadset! Got a lot of folk butt hurt in the comments lol. I enjoyed the film for the cinematography but yea Chani had too much of an independent role in this film compared to the novels. In the novel she was supportive of him throughout his campaign to become Emperor. They took a lot from Paul’s story to build up Chani. Also check your email and let’s set up time for the book review of “The Man Who Cried I Am”

Race and gender swapping Liet Kynes and cutting the relationship to Chani, totally destroyed the basis of Paul and Chani’s bond. Both their fathers were murdered by the Harkonnens

Diversity of thought among the Fremen is entirely believable. Skeptic Chani serves as a moral compass in relation to Paul's transformation into a powerful leader. She loves Paul, knows the dangers in worshiping him, and hence rejects the religious fanaticism that surrounds him. In the end, she's heartbroken not just by Paul's decision to marry Irulan, but also because he ended up taking advantage of the Fremen beliefs in order to gain power and vengeance, after telling her multiple times throughout the film that he's no messiah. Paul left Chani in the dark when it comes to the decisions he ended up making, so her reactions are understandable. After taking the water of life Paul says, when referring to Chani "she'll come to understand, I've seen it". Which means that she'll come to understand and be on his side. They'll get back together, possibly during the holy war, and this deviation from the source material won't affect what happens in Messiah. "History will remember us as wives" sounded good when the book came out in the 60s, but now it's kinda cringe. Movie Chani is an actual character now, instead of a stamp of approval for Paul's actions. If it bothers you, then you can always go back and watch the submissive one who only says "I love u Paul" in Lynch's Dune. Stilgar is not a buffoon, he serves as a comic relief in key moments but ultimately his fanatical devotion to Paul is heartbreaking. The Bene Gesserit are not robots, Jessica only breaks down a bit when she's alone but she's never a damsel in distress. The only way audiences can know how easily they regain their composure is by allowing them to see their emotions. Also, Liet Kynes' race isn't specified in the book.
