These movies are better than a goldish and peanut butter sandwich. Quite frankly, they're WAY better. But have you ever even had a pb&g? I highly recommend it, though comparing it to these 2 masterpieces is probably a bit disingenuous. The sandwich is real solid, if you're a goldfish guy like me then the rare double-crunch-combo (crunchy peanut butter, because obviously) then this is a no-brainer. Slap some jam on there if you're feeling really wild and cut it diagonally because you're an adult and that not only gives you a better tasing sandwich, but it creates more of it. Don't ask how.
These movies are amazing and I'm so happy the beloved Dune series is getting the treatment it deserves though many of us feared it never would. I can't wait for Messiah, a few of those scenes are gonna be....tricky ones to portray. But if anyone can do it...Denis Villeneuve can. In DV we trust.

You are always going to get whining people, who just can't accept that the word adaptation is important to remember 😂. This was a great movie that took the spirit of the books and the message the author was trying to convey and made it into something that works for the screen and for this century.

@@geofthompson3844 yes I realize you’re one of those “adapted for a modern audience” types. Which has been a huge problem for film industry and luckily your view is a minority one and it seems to be hitting studios and companies where that ideology will be ditched. Sooner the better.

@@geofthompson3844 cause it’s a really good movie. Are you having problems following conversations? Zendaya and the changes to Chani are the weakest parts of the movie. But it doesn’t drag everything else about the movie down. The Harkonnens are also too cartoonish in their villainy but it’s a still an interesting portrayal with great performances.

While this 2 parter is very interesting, this version of Chani reminds me of a Lois Lane that dates Superman while publishing articles about the Kryptonian threat.

That’s a really fun way to put it haha. I think Chani’s growth lined up alongside Paul’s allows us to view Paul a lot moreso how Frank Herbert intended. I think it’s one of those changes that seems like it should’ve been in the books to begin with: watching her wrestle internally (and eventually externally) with watching Paul morph into something she dislikes rather strongly. A threat to the only thing she’s ever truly cared about, while STILL loving the man on the inside. I think Chani’s a CLEAR example of a change being made from the books that exclusively strengthens the source material.

@@corndogtalks I don't know where to begin. It's obvious to me that changes which break plot line, turn characters hypocritical or completely eliminate their strengths, weakens the story overall. I'd suggest reading the book about 3 or 4 times, take notes. Actually follow and plot Chani's journey and actions. She states her intentions many times and follows through. I think then you'll see the disservice to and weakening of the vivid characters and emotional stakes. I am 100% certain, Frank Herbert would be very displeased with this mis-characterization of Chani.

Could be construed as a miscast, I think of it more as just a change. Maybe an unnecessary one? I don’t think it hurts the story at all, but I typically dislike changes that don’t serve the story at all. This change doesn’t really make the story better at all so why do it? but at the same time at least it doesn’t hurt the movie.

@@corndogtalks It does hurt. it made no sense other than to pander. Movies can't show everything in books, but they don't get a pass on fundamentals. 1984's, for all the Weirding Module bit, had realistic sets and good casting. Not worse than useless sex changes.

@joejackson4627 Liet-Kynes's entire role in the book is to provide some info-dump and then brief assistance to Paul and Jessica to let them escape, then die. Being parent to Chani has no real bearing on the plot, let alo e which parent. So why is it so important to you if the character is male or female? It has precisely zero effect on the story, interactions with the characters, or what they do. The question is, why are you so offended by it?

@@keith6706 Plotwise. A "Chani and I are alike in losing a father to Harkonnens" How about asking the director why make a useless change than ask a fan why the uselessness is important? And no, if the character were female in the book I would've been just as bothered by it being cast with a guy.

I liked the movie but I really feel they dropped the ball with Paul's future visions of the famine his actions will cause. Somehow the emotional weight of that decision didn't really hit for me.

What do you think they could’ve done to improve that? More clarity, more time spent on it? Like I said: how the heck do you visually show prophetic VISIONS? How do you have him undergo a significant change all inside his own head? It’s tough to put on actual screen without maybe Paul narrating it to us? which I highly doubt would’ve fit nicely. I think a tiny bit more time could’ve been spent seeing him wrestle with his role in the most upcoming events, instead of always seeming like he knew exactly what to do immediately. A bit of time spent watching him struggle to do what he knows he must, type thing? + in Messiah he IS able to know the precise perfect thing for every moment, that contrasted with a less decisive Paul would be even more interesting growth

It is still impossible to adapt. The fact that they did all these changes, means the real Dune cannot be adapted.

All 3 meanings of the word 'adapt' support the notion that changing and altering is inherent to adapting, including the one specifically regarding film. I know what you're getting at, but the sheer act of changing this from a book to a movie IS, in and of itself, an adaptation, which requires at least some level of alterations. I think it's perfectly possible to adapt Dune as 1:1 as humanly possible, but the product would suffer because of that. The vast majority of book adaptations become worse due to changing and altering; I personally don't think Dune falls under that category, though.

@@corndogtalks That’s what I mean, the changes were not done right. Means it is still too difficult to adapt. Jackson made changes to LOTR but they were mostly done right.

No, it certainly wasn’t. I hope I didn’t say it was at some point throughout the video, I don’t believe I did. A few times I mention that one of the BEST things these movies have done has been picking and choosing what to adapt 1:1, what to cut, and what to alter. The books as they exist were always considered ‘impossible to adapt’ for multiple reasons, and trying to do the whole thing 1:1 would be disastrous. Lynch more or less did that.

Aw man, me too. Just not nearly enough time to do it all when it’s movie’s vs TV. I’ve long said my ideal picture-perfect adaptation model is you do the movies as per usual, 2-3 hours make changes as you see fit etc, PLUS an animated project that is shot for shot line for line word for word, just a perfect 1:1 adaption in animation.

@@corndogtalksYeah it was. It was a FAITHFUL adaptation of the books. Denis adapted it how he saw the book, he adapted it how Frank would have wanted. It isn't a carbon copy of the book but that isn't what faithful means. He told Frank's story in the way it should be told. It's epic. I can't think of a single thing it got wrong.

DONE PERFECTLY!!!!!!!....Cue Borat hand bounce .................NOT!!!......... it wasn't a bad set of movies but missed the mark in the end as a Dune adaptation. They cut out Alia form the story! The idea of that character is so creepy and one of the best parts of the book! They left out so many details all around. I'm of the opinion that the book could have been given justice in a 8-10 episode season on HBO, but at this point who would bother. The book has been adapted 3 times and the Sci-Fi channels version is the best adaptation however the low budget and limited technology in 1999/2000 didn't give the mini-series any shelf life.

Okay, I agree that it is an epic well produced movie and a good story. But it is what I call Dune adjacent not Dune or what if Dune. Once you have read the book and see this movie. It is nope not Dune of the book. Dune the movie is an alternate universe. Several key things are missing or just wrong. So as a stand alone story it is great. Best and most expensive fan fiction ever. The best adaptation ever done was a low budget version made by the science fiction channel in the 90's I think it was. It was a mini series and done exceptionally close to the actual story. So in closing the new movies are with out a doubt worth the watch, however they are only mostly Dune, they are not Dune it is far more complex and involved. Production and presentation - 5 Stars. Actual story - 2 1/2 stars. If you have read the book you will know why. Great fan fiction.

I have read the books and I’m inclined to disagree, while fully acknowledging they do leave more things out than your average ‘great adaptation’. I’m curious your thoughts on what specific elements you felt were lacking to make this a truer DUNE as opposed to just a cool sci-fi story? As has been stated innumerable times, the themes, concepts, and character arcs within the books are incredibly hard to translate. So hard in fact that many (including Villeneuve himself I’d reckon) would argue they’re straight-up not worth adapting. You make a super compelling point, I-and likely many others-would love for you to expand. Not many people claim it was a masterfully made movie(s) while still not succeeding as an adaptation to Dune itself.

As I said it is a well done movie. But it basically ignores the Guild which are major players in the novel. The movie basically portrays Chani as just some determined Fremen woman which really diminishes her, in the book she was so much more. That is the impression I get. There is more here but I don't wish to go farther here. Atomics to threat the spice production was just lazy writing. (But this is a pet peeve on my part. The threat of atomics is so cliche.) The actual threat used in the book was far more insidious. Paul's sister being in the womb the whole time means the events of movie happened in 9 months. This time scale makes zero sense. There is so much more. When I line up things side by side the newest rendition comes across to me as an alternative universe Dune, but Not Dune of the novels sorry. The best adaptation I have seen was the TV series. Very low production but fairly spot on for story. So in closing I will say this is just my personal opinion and it is no more right or wrong than yours. The ultimate purpose of movies is to be entertained and I was. So in that respect job well done.

How so? I think they added some depth to Paul and Chani for sure and didn’t sacrifice *too* much in service of that? There’s obviously the large time gap between now and Messiah so the way characters feel IMMEDIATELY upon concluding Pt 2 doesn’t have to line up precisely with how they feel at the start of Messiah.

@@corndogtalksSpoiler Warning for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet. How about the disagreement after Paul's announcement that he would marry the emperor's daughter. In the book Chani understood that it was just a political marriage, and that she was the one Paul loved. Or how Jessica and Chani were friends at the end of the movie. Or how they removed Alia entirely.

Open your eyes, this was the worst movie in decades. Everything wrong with the books DV repeated in this movie. The villain was a Mary sue, the hero was not an anti hero, getting on worms is super easy if you just do it off camera, no lasers to protect the pool of souls, nukes conveniently placed a few blocks away and the desert people didn’t see them install a giant vault in a mountain?! Come on, this movie was garbage.

Maybe you are afraid of a guy like that, but I'm not because those dudes are cowards. And even so, why was he harder for Paul to beat than Jamis was for Paul to beat? Why do you think Jamis was shown to be so utterly horrible at combat while fighting a completely inexperienced Paul?
