The reason why he is fat is kinda horrible, his name is Themberchaud and he was living with dwarfs as a living forge. The thing with dragons is that they get stronger with age and the dwarf knew how dangerous he would be, so they kept him fed and fat so he would be easier to kill (Cant fly with his weigth )when that happened. TLDR : Dwarf Kept him Morbidly Obese to be able to kill him once he grow to powerfull

I busted up laughing in theaters when I saw this dragon. Because I could imagine a D&D campaign where kids are sitting around a table and the DM is like "AND A GIANT RED DRAGON APEARS!!" and slaps a fat plushie toy on the table. "umm.. sorry i don't have a dragon mini for this encounter, but I do have this McDonalds toy" and then the characters experience THIS in game. brilliant.

His name is Themberchaud. He once had a... arrangement with the dwarves that lived in the mines that are his lair, and they fed him so much this is the result. I _LOVE_ him!

I love the fire sparking and not being actual flames to show what happens when the DM wants the dragon to breathe fire but can't get a 5 or a 6 on the dragons turn.

Thembershard can't make fire breath anymore, he can make the gases but he has to have an external source to ignite it

It’s even better when you learn the lore about red dragons you see a large chunk of the time they spend awake when they’re not rampaging is coming up with contingency plans for if their lair is ever invaded and once it is they’ll pick a plan at random that applies to the situation and they’ll go all in so they can spend the minimum amount of time thinking during the fight so while some people complain about how dragon chungus here just acts like a rampaging animal I actually really like that they kept him to this in the Lair cause it’s 100% in character for red dragons

Yeah, ignoring the fact that he's so big it's easy for him to trip, hence him tripping over the fallen chain and log rolling over the edge. This whole chase was the most exercise he was permitted to get in centuries.

I enjoyed that he used his bulk to his advantage so much. The penguin glide, the tipping of ramps, the roll on the side, he uses that mass with his attacks, rather than having to fight against his own portliness and adventurers at the same time.

for the record: the dragon is like that because it spent most of it's life locked up by Duergar (dark dwarves, one of the traditionally evil-aligned subraces...they LOVE slavery) fueling thier forges for them. That he lived long enough to outmaneuver the dwarves (they kept trying to bring in red dragon eggs that they could hatch into more managable replacements. he kept manipulating his captors into killing them off to prevent his own demise) and escape is actually a testament to just how cunning, intelligent, and manipulative red dragons can be. but of course he's portrayed as lumbering brute for comedic effect.

Some movements are comedic (like the struggling wings); though I will say I like how the dragon was still treated as dangerous. Other than a couple of fearful snarks, the protagonists still treat him as incredibly dangerous, and Thumberchaud does show he can still move like a battering ram the size of a house.

@@marcoelhodev The nice thing is, he was both. He's slow and clumsy, but his very size and mass makes him a rolling sliding disaster to human-size creatures. And he was smart enough to use his bulk to his advantage.

Its something i liked about the film. As a non-dnd player, I was able to enjoy the film without feeling i was missing out. But i felt there were a few things, like this, that were references within DnD that players would get. Another example was when Edgin was listing off their adventures together to Holga, it felt like some could be classic campaigns.

How? How does a dragon get that fat in such a deep, dark dungeon? What are the chances that adventurers would often wander there for him to snack on. If anything, a skinny underfed dragon would make more sense if you find one in a dungeon.

@@justinguyos5476 Themberchaud got pudgy because a group of duergar (deep dwarves) gave him food offerings as payment for keeping their forge alit. However, this led to them overfeeding the dragon, resulting in him being extra pudgy.

What's up with the dragon's firebreath? 1:53 It first breathes gas, then ignites the gas with a spark like a gigantic lighter. I thought this was a clever touch.

Themberchaud demonstrates just how intelligent he is all throughout this scene. He regularly uses his own weight to his advantage, letting gravity and momentum propel him faster than he would be able to move normally. While his D&D stats indicate he can't fly very far, his normal movement and climbing speed are the same for a normal red dragon despite his bulk, and that's how he manages it.

I think my one big complaint about the movie is it doesn't portray dragons as the intensely intelligent, egotistical talkers that they are in dnd lore. It would've been cool to see they party having to try and talk their way out of being eaten instead of just a chase, and convincing him to eat the thay undead guys.

True, although in fairness to the film, Themberchaud’s a red dragon, and they’re notoriously hard to negotiate with.

It’s certainly something they could have added (they do any more movies and hopefully it’s something they’ll do more if) but I will note one thing; why would Themberchaud negotiate in the scene? There’s nothing either the heroes or assassins could really offer him that he couldn’t do or take himself. The only value they really have in his eyes is as lunch

I kinda hope that the black dragon from the flashback, Rakor I think, appears in the next one looking for the crown. Black dragons are totally nasty and throwing that level of evil onto a dragon will remind people that dragons can br movers and shakers in this world too. But I do love the Themberchund here. Not every dragon needs to be taken super seriously, and Themberchund was exactly what this adventure/comedy needed.

When I first saw this, I said ‘oh it’s a chubby dragon!’ And my friend replied with ‘no it isn’t that’s just how big dragons look!’ To which I then replied ‘ it has a bearded dragon face!’ Ya know how you can see how chubby they are based on the size of their neck? Then this absolute CHONKER fully emerged and we were all ecstatic that I was right!

So this gave me a damn Overlord Flashback. Sometime in season Four we get to meet the frost dragons. Out of the many children the Male dragon had, he had one son that was basically obese just like this dude.🤣🤣🤣 But he was a shut in book worm which is why he gained so much weight. And bc he always read in a dimly lit room, he had to wear glasses due to his failing eyesight. Ironically enough, he survived being killed bc he knew so much and that ended up benefiting his Majesty Ains Ool Gown.

@@KingSpades The Duergar used him (and previous red dragons) to power the forges in their city Gracklstugh. They captured baby dragons and would keep them obedient with food and treasure, and when they grew too old and powerful (and started thinking they should be in charge) they Duergar would kill them and install a new dragon. Themberchaud was able to escape before this happened to him, and a lot of this can be played out in the Out of the Abyss D&D 5e adventure module.

Also, Themberchaud the dragon isn't new to D&D, it is an original character from back in second edition. There are a lot of things in this movie that were throwbacks to older editions and I love it.
