I love your reviews way more that Tom Vasel"s ones because your English is way more non-english-speaker friendly (specially when hearing and not watching), Tom's reviews are 500 km/h spoken and I always get lost in the middle. Keep the good work!

Thanks for the review! I really like how these games leave so much room for customization and house rules. I should point out, too, that canceling an encounter with experience points has been in the game system since Castle Ravenloft.

The best (and in some cases only) reason for buying these sets is that there are very few ways to get a great supply of cheap miniatures for your real D&D/other RP system game (the dungeon tiles may be of use, too, your mileage may vary). They paint up decently with some prep work (not quite as well as, say, Reaper Bones, but they're even cheaper per unit), and you get a fair number of the "common" enemies needed for many campaigns. If you like minis for your D&D campaign and need a source of cheap ones, I'd say that alone makes the price tag ($50ish for ~40 miniatures) well worth it, even if you never play the actual board game as intended. They are WAY cheaper than buying the pre-painted WizKids sets that D&D proper is putting out, and you KNOW what you're getting with these (and in the case of ToEE, they're the exact same sculpts as in the Tyranny of Dragons set, just unpainted).

Sorry to hear that. I got quite a lot of plastic monster minis from games like these that came out in the 1990s.

Hey Nick a potential correction here. I ALSO thought you needed to be adjacent to the trap to disarm it. (it does makes sense the way you said it). But the BGG rulebook guys got out there and are telling us that you need to be ON it to disable it. I like your way better but felt compelled to share what I heard. Also I seen you used my picture from BGG. My kitchen table has made it to the youtubes! I thought that was pretty cool. I know it’s my image because I custom built an insert for it in the picture and the map was hanging off the table. Very cool! Thanks a lot for the review!

Interesting. I noted that they are using "advantage" which is a 5E term. And seeing how the box art has the 5E font and lettering, this would make sense. I have Legend of Drizzt, which is more 4E based.

Recently bought the starter box for 5th edition, and have had a really hard time finding mini figures, buying this box, mostly for the minis and the tiles., but also for some more "casual" dnd gaming. :)

I put aside Castle Ravenloft for much longer because it wasn't what I hoped for and got it out for solo play in 2020 when home for the pandemic. One review said it was too hard, but I found if I didn't keep my two heroes on the same tile (and had the Cleric) then I could win all the scenarios except the last in at most three tries. I needed three heroes for the finale against Count Strahd, the vampire.

I think the main problems with these games is that the story lines are really lame (the monsters just come out at random and start chasing the player characters) and there is no room to go above level two. That said the minis are great, and I think that you can take these games and modify them some. If you had a level-up scheme, maybe some ability scores to do checks against, lengthen the distance ranged attacks can reach, and had a town with people you can interact with then you can use the combat system as a way of shortening encounters so you could finish a mission with 2-3 encounters plus role playing in 2 hours. So it could be made into a sort of smartened-up version of the board games or dumbed-down version of D&D that could give people who have little time a chance to do a simple fantasy RPG.
@sandal_thong86312 жыл бұрын
I don't mind a _constrained_ board game version of D&D (don't like "dumbed-down"). I liked Dragon Strike quite a bit, but the rule that the DM wins if even one character dies makes the game less fun. It should be he's telling a story and maybe even on your side with an NPC? Although I'm told AD&D players hate that. Maybe you could do something like that.
@VioletDeliriums2 жыл бұрын
@@sandal_thong8631 I played AD&D. We had NPCs (sometimes otherworldly ones) that we worked with or for, and we didn't detest story. Although there are many good things about newer editions (such as the combat system of 5e), the problem I have with it is that it is not as challenging. The PCs are superheroes, so the players don't really learn how to survive. And there are far too many player supplements -- the DM is left with nothing to really help them build their chops, and only more problems when players who buy all the latest books want to throw some new class/archetype or race in with all sorts of superpowers that throws the balance of the game off in a way that further limits the DM's ability to present an actual challenge. Yes, you can make things hard in 5e, but it takes a very skilled DM to make that happen -- and WoTC is really not very helpful in supplying DMs with ideas they can use to improve the quality of the game.

@@VioletDeliriums I only played D&D once, and didn't know what to do. I watched a video and I guess I was supposed to get a job at the keep and gain experience to level up. Then put together a party (since it was the DM and me, they would be NPCs) and travel to the monster's lair. And if I failed we would start over. Does that sound right? I did play GURPS as a fantasy adventure campaign, but I was just along for the ride, and my character's DX was so bad I couldn't hit so was pretty worthless, except the time I grappled so ST came into play! I saw GURPS Vikings were on the order of superheroes. So it depends what people want. If they want a challenging or exciting adventure then they need an advanced character. If they want something where they have to level-up then they should avoid combat because they can die easily.
@VioletDeliriums2 жыл бұрын
@@sandal_thong8631 Well, the challenge in AD&D was surviving the low levels. It was so much harder than in today's version.

Thanks for your good pronunciation, as esbegan has already stated. I bought a box; but I found that the three Air Cultists are missing, two of the green tokens are wrong, the back of some tiles is sligthly green gray instead of blue gray ... maybe it's too big to be too good. Drizzit was better. As I found no customer care eMail, I sent a snail mail to Wizards asking for the three Cultists, and I'm still waiting for an answer.

@@giochiepassatempi That was my experience with getting a wrong ship in Merchants & Marauders: the game company sent me the correct one when I asked. Same with a game that promised something like 200 WW2 figures but maybe had 175. I think those were the only two missing pieces.

I'm wondering which game to get with Ravenloft. This one has a village, but all the characters are the same. So I won't get a paladin, but could have two fighters or two clerics in the party, or have one character choose from two sets of cards, assuming they differ.
@Suzumebachigr8 жыл бұрын
I am debating on buying this one recently. I would HATE it if anything was missing, i find it very inappropriate for a board game to happen....also i really want more depth than what this game offers...but i have no idea what else should i look at....any ideas? We are 3 ppl wanting to play board fantasy games like this....but a little more deeper fightwise and storywise.

If you want for a more RPG-like board game, look for Descent 2E, up to 5 players, one of the players is the Overlord (like a GM). I played a lot with my group of 4.
@sandal_thong86312 жыл бұрын
@@luiz92 I've played Descent 2E one-on-one and two heroes aren't strong enough for a party. So I can see maybe 4 players or 5 players with 3 and 4 heroes, respectively being winnable.

I feel these games would be much better received if they didn't have the burden of the Dungeons & Dragons name attached to them. It's not an RPG, it's a brutal dungeon run for your pals to gather and have some co-op fun against the game, which for some groups is much better than having the poor forever DM having to play the Overlord in Descent because nobody else wants to be the antagonist.
@sandal_thong86312 жыл бұрын
When I didn't like Castle Ravenloft, someone suggested Descent so I got that. It was very antagonistic: DM vs Heroes; rather than a DM telling a story. I did two campaigns, first as hero, second as DM and the DM had such an advantage as the adventures continued that there was no way for the heroes to come back. I guess I was looking for a constrained D&D-type board game like Dragon Strike.

As to your first comment, I thought having a demon altar on one of the handbooks was asking for trouble. But they said the negative publicity helped boost sales! And the suicide bit was a lie, as was the idea that it was an intro to devil-worship. They also said people wanted more dragons, since it was in the name. I wonder how things would have been different if they called it "Dungeons and Demons." I think that's why the movie sucked because they had to have multiple dragons!

The main problem I've seen over and over again is that there simply isn't enough *game* in these games. Move, Monster appears, fight monster, move again. Over and over and over with very little variation. There is almost no depth to the gameplay and it makes them, bluntly, monotonous. A good comparison is how weak these games seem stacked up against the old Doom boardgame for instance.
@sandal_thong86312 жыл бұрын
Without a GM/DM there's no way to have alternatives like talking to an NPC or searching for secret passages.
