The area of Dunrobin goes way back to Freskin de Moravia, a Norman who helped both David I and William the Lion regain control of the Nothern Highlands. Earl Robin was the founder of this castle in 1275, which looked very different than the Dunrobin Castle we know today. Although it has transformed from that time, the castle still holds his name Dun in Gaelic meaning Fort, and Robin, being his name.
The 5th Earl ended up marrying Princess Margaret, daughter of Robert the Bruce. The Wolf of Badenoch lived here as well. A wildly brutal man who is known for terrorizing many of the Highland lands.
The 2nd Duke of Sutherland inherited the castle in 1841, who then had 8 children. This gave way to the massive expansion of the castle. Most of the French Chateau styling came from 1845 by Charles Barry, who was a master of the Gothic Revival style. Charles Barry’s success at this castle is what influenced the men who built the tower of London to be what it is today. When Dunrobin castle was finished it was three times larger than it had been 6 years earlier.
The Castle was used as a Naval Hospital during World War I, and a boarding school from 1965 to 1972. It overlooks the beautiful Moray of Firth with a path leading directly to its shores.
It is the most Northerly of Scotland’s castles and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms and has been continuously inhabited since the 1300’s. Home to the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland. Visitors are allowed to take a self-guided tour through some of the 20 rooms in one of the most extravagant residences in the Northern Highlands.

Hi! Welcome to the Culture Trekking Community! My name is Janiel Green, a Physician Assistant, Scuba Diver, Dog lover, Photographer, and Videographer! I love to make people smile, am known for not beating around the bush (unless it is in my garden). I also tend to say it as I see it before my brain can tell me its probably not socially acceptable to do so. My spirit animal is a Sea Turtle, I hate mushrooms, and don’t trust a man who lays on the romance too thick.
I love to travel the world, connect with different cultures, and find sustainable adventure. I have explored the most off the beaten path places, and cultures throughout the world. This year I’m taking you along as I explore my hometown, UTAH! From Anasazi Ruins in Southern Utah, to the High Uintah Mountains best waterfalls and camping locations.
Life isn’t always easy, and I have had my fair share of heartache. I have been through the thick of it with those internal battles we all have. Now I’m completely dedicated to inspiring you on the inside to better explore the outside and find beauty between the lines of the contrasts of life. I’m so excited to have you here! Be sure to subscribe to your social media channel of choice right here & see you soon!

Yeah, pretty crazy story about the Navy helping put out the castle fire. They just happened to be in the harbor, and because they treated so many of the Navy men within the castle, they came and helped put out the fire....essentially saving the castle.

It does indeed, but I feel like anywhere in the world you look ancient past, 17th, 18th, 19th and even the 20th century - every single one of us has a dubious history. It is always a conundrum of mine, to make the people the castle is giving jobs to now pay for the sins of the past, or appreciate how kind and what a wonderful time I had while I was there. It is a hard decision really. Yet I can walk through a museum like Auschwitz, hate what the Nazi's did, but not hate Germany. I don't know what the answer is....

@@CultureTrekking In your defense, i just bought a book about the connection of Flemish immigrants into Scotland. Freskin was a Flemish knight and the forefather of the Douglas Clan and one or 2 other mayor clans. Also many other clans were founded by Flemish migrants, like the obvious Flemmings, Morays, etc. I believe it's also in their wiki. I'm a bit of a history buff you see :D Since i did the West Highland Way, i fell in love with your beautiful country! Only the haggis, that's too much for me :P Awesome video and keep up the good work!

Also at the time, the county of Flanders bordered Normandy. And William the conqueror was married to the daughter of Count Baldwin of Flanders. So I believe it's a common misconception. No harm done! ^^

The Earls of Sutherland are ancestors of King Robert the Bruce and William the conqueror as well .

I had to laugh - the family 'still have cottages & other houses in the area' - which means they too consider this place of 179 rooms to be a ridiculoua monstrosity to actually live in ! How sad - there are 'apartments' in the building that some family members live in. Ok so as a block of apartments I can see the point - but really apart from that why in anybody's imagination did any of these landowners build such huge places ? 179 rooms - you could not walk around them all in a day !!! I am quite sure I know which side I would have been on in the French Revolution era ! It's quite beautiful of course, but as with all of these giant houses - a total 'look at how wealthy I am' construction is how they came to be built ! Grrr !

Yeah, it was mostly for their staff to live and have lavish parties where guests could stay. But really boils down to pomp.
