Technically they are. In this case one of the gentlemen cranking actually arranged this music (so is the ‘noteur’), so these are his books we’re hearing. In a mechanical organ, it doesn’t just “make it up”; the arranger or noteur “plays” the organ via the medium such as pinned cylinder, cardboard book, paper roll, computer data etc.

That was brilliant and proves that old technology can handle any music at all. How on earth you both managed to synchronise the organs is amazing. I cranked a Verbeek organ once and I know that the speed of cranking affects the tempo of the music. How did you manage to keep it all synchronised? Brilliant anyway!
@theorganguy
@theorganguy 4 жыл бұрын
When you get the chance crank two Raffin organs with a buddy... personally I like to have at least partially visual help when playing synchronized... but generally you do it in the same way you would play an instrument in the orchestra/band: by ear! As long as everyone sync-ing up agrees on what the tempo of the song is supposed to be, you play that song... these days there is a lot of bluetooth synchronization going on... but as long as there is a book or a roll in play, no such cheating!

Plot twist: it was all recorded with MIDI in advance and they're just crank-syncing for the camera! Haha probably not, but I'm curious how this was recorded with such a nice stereo image... where do you even put the microphones? It sounds like at least 2-3 mics on each organ.

@@drewsquickfix It's certainly possible but I think the lack of background noise isn't necessarily proof. It could be reduced to -60 with a good noise profile and gated as well. Or they could have something like a piano mic on the inside! Either way, somebody put some work in to make it sound good, and even if it is a MIDI sequence, that's no easy task either!
@theorganguy
@theorganguy 4 жыл бұрын
Just to clear it up: you are not listening to a MIDI recording here (such things have happened on youtube already tho as well) but that is indeed the sound of these two organs. There *was* MIDI involved in the process of making the two organ books, tho!

Hurrah! What a wonderful melody! I congratulate one who programmed the melodies in barrel organ. Even some clocks marked the hours of the day by playing melodies on built in barrel organ just before or soon after striking the hours. Such clocks are known as pipe-organ clocks. Nowadays music-box, chiming clocks and pipe-organ clocks are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks because they contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board of sound chips connected to speaker. But nothing can beat the real music-boxes, barrel organ, pipe-organ clocks and chiming clocks.

You don't even need people to operate this machine.
@andrewbarrett1537
@andrewbarrett1537 Жыл бұрын
For some street organs this is true. For others, they at least have manual draw stops (the knobs on the side of the case) where a person is needed to manually change them and so change the sound of the instrument. Larger instruments can operate them automatically. Also, while most musical arrangements for these take into account a steady cranking speed (so, rubato is cut into the music; for example Gustav Bruder’s arrangements for German fairground organs which change the length/ratio of holes to achieve realistic rubato and a variety of tempos despite a constant cardboard speed), the arrangements Patrick Mathis has made here save cardboard at times by having “pauses” in the music, for the grinder to take a break before starting again, rather than just have a large passage of blank cardboard pulled through the length of the pause. Only a well made organ in good condition can stop and then start back up immediately like that and have the bellows generate enough air in a short amount of time for an instant start. Also, the grinder needs to be musically aware. This is why most old and new mechanical organ arrangements have rubato cut in if wanted, because the arranger doesn’t necessarily trust the grinder enough to do much besides crank at a steady speed, and change the stops.
