Fraserburg is one of the smallest towns I have ever travelled to in the Northern Cape South Africa. It also has a big church. Unbelievable to think how these small places can survive in the modern world. We tried to see Dinosaur footprints! #dustbugs #travel #southafrica #fraserburg #offroad

@@DustBugsTravel The only thing missing from this video is showing us the scenery before you get to the town. The outer environments are usually much more beautiful than the dusty towns. I see your new videos (like your Prieska videa) does that very well, thank you!

Those Corbelled houses (03 :40) are fairly commonplace in the Karoo.

We had no idea even what corbelled houses were when we visited Fraserburg. 🫣, We have since seen a few dotted all over the Karoo. Looking back now, it's so clearly a corbelled house and a fantastic speciment at that. 😁🛖 We find them fascinating structures.

Been dipping back into your earlier videos - all are great - however, the happy chatter between the two of you in the later ones definitely adds something extra special! I cannot tell you just how much I’m enjoying your travels with you both - thank you 🙏🏻

Thank you so much, you certainly went far back. This video was part of our very first trip and Sonia wasn't totally on board with the whole vlog thing yet. She was certainly born with the gift of the gab, so warmed up to the idea very quickly. It's nice to hear that you enjoy our endless chatter, we sometimes wonder if we'll ever run out of things to say! 🤣🚗

Wow, thanks for the trip down memory lane! Was there during my high school years in the boarding school. It's a fact that the farmers keeps the towns economy alive.

Great to come across someone else who has been to Fraserburg! I approached it from the Williston side, it was mainly a dirt road and I was a bit apprehensive as a woman on my own, as it was over 100 kilometres, but I was impressed with the level of maintenance of the road and didn’t pass even one other vehicle! I am surprised you didn’t see Fraserburg’s iconic ‘pepper pot’, it is a national monument and is a quaint hexagonal tower, painted white, which has served initially as a market office, and later as a dominee’s office, a magistrate’s office and a library. It has a bell and that used to be rung to announce the nightly curfew in apartheid era days, so it is historically pretty significant. Next to it is a Karoo rock garden, full of typical Karoo plants and most of them were flowering when I was there in November. The pepper pot and garden were off down a side street so I suppose it isn’t the easiest site to find, though I think I glimpsed the pepper pot behind some trees in part of your video. I didn’t see the corbelled house, but the night before my visit to Fraserburg I stayed over in one on the Osfontein farm between Loxton and Carnarvon. Wow, what a fantastic experience, it was the highlight of my trip, and well worth a visit. Very comfortable accommodation too! From Fraserburg I went on to Leeu Gamka through a spectacular mountain pass. It was a most memorable day.

We probably missed much more than the pepper pot, but it is never our goal to visit or show every place of interest, it is simply impossible since there is so much to see in every place. Your trip sounds like a fantastic adventure and we love it that you took on the gravel road from Williston to Fraserburg. 🤩 It's a wonderful part of the Karoo. The fact that there are so few vehicles on that road is both daunting and fantastic at the same time! Thank you for sharing your story, we're sure you made some wonderful memories.

We left South Africa 40 years ago and really enjoy travelling with you guys, thank you for taking us along. We were a bit concerned that your travelling partner was rather quiet for part of your trip ( hope Sonja is well). 😀

Thank you, it's great to have you along! 😁 You must miss South Africa terribly sometimes. This video was part of the first trip that we documented, so Sonia (my travelling partner and wife 😍) was still getting used to the idea. She is still super camera-shy, but you'll hear hear her a lot more in our recent videos, there are almost 200 now for you to enjoy. 🤩 We appreciate your concern though. 😊

I travel quite extensively due to my work, and the Karroo is my favorite region of the country. Like you, I am always on a time restricted itinerary. I also hear from the residents of these quaint and characterful places that it's a pity that more people don't visit them. BUT the interesting places mostly seem to be closed or operate according to strict time limits, which few seem to be willing to accommodate. So sad. Thanks for your wonderful videos. I enjoy seeing these places through your lens.

I was there 2 weeks ago. Stayed 3 nights. I live in C.T. Sadly a very high unemployment rate. Fascinating place nonetheless. I know 2 ladies that own several properties there. Bargain prices, on huge plots.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
We saw how enormous those plots were, right nextdoor to where we were staying was one like that too. Even space for a tennis court! I hope they get buyers who are able to invest in the town and create some employment opportunities. We were there on a random Thursday afternoon and the town was quite lively with activity. You're correct, it is a fascinating place and I'm sure you got to exploring quite a bit of it during your time there. We missed out on the dinosaur prints just outside of town, but will keep in mind for a future visit. 🦖

Wonderful to see a town where a church is both the biggest building and in the centre of town! My mom spent most of her childhood years in the Karoo and they were all active church members. She also has great memories of the starry skies over there. Hope you got to see that too during your stay!

6:55 - Is that a chapel? Just wonder why such a small place would need two houses of prayer. Unless maybe two different denominations that don't like to share space.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Жыл бұрын
It certainly does look like a chapel to me. It's not uncommon at all for small places to have two or more churches, usually at least one for the English community and at least one other for the Afrikaans community. We've been to towns where one church serves two denominations, but that's not common at all, at least as far as we could tell. Each congregation seems to prefer to have their own dedicated church building. 💒😊
