"I did as much as I could do at that time in my life ... I tried as hard as I could and I couldn't do better"
- Dustin Hoffman in 1971
Interview by Milton Hoffman from the Pacifica Radio Archives
Hear more from this rare interview: blankonblank.org/interviews/du...
We came across this rarely heard interview with Dustin Hoffman recorded in 1971. It's such a thoughtful, unrushed conversation from a Hollywood icon when he was just a few years into becoming a star. He was still catching his breath and asking the questions that so many of us wonder when professional careers and a family life are beginning to take shape.
Even though Hoffman was only 33 at the time of the interview, he said Hollywood already viewed as an old timer, part of the establishment. This despite the fact The Graduate, Hoffman’s breakout film, had been released a few years earlier. That was followed up by his role as Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy -- the X rated film that won an oscar for best picture.
Listening to this interview tape, we were drawn to this idea of the struggles that pop up between different generations and the questions one confronts internally as he or she gets older.
Enjoy. Here’s Dustin Hoffman like you've rarely heard him before.
CHOICE QUOTES
"When I was an adolescent it was a very, very painful time for me. I had a lot of trouble in school."
"I grew up on the coattails of an aggressive society. I carried a knife taped to my leg. I never used it, but it was there"
"when I was an adolescent it was a very, very painful time for me. I had a lot of trouble in school."
"'I'm walking here. I'm walking here.' That wasn't in the script. That was an accident. We were walking across the street, and a cab came by and threatened to ruin the shot. At that moment, I was not Ratso, I was just myself trying to save the scene."
"I've tried to bring out unattractive aspects of me in roles that I've played, and sometimes achieved that. I can't apologize for anything I've done."
"I've just been around three years. I'm thought of as a veteran. I'm no longer a newcomer. I'm kind of establishment I guess."

These videos are an art! And not just for the animation, but more for the insight of the people being interviewed at that particular time in their lives that they are being interviewed. It's quite beautiful!!!🌹

he might not like it but he really is a different kind of actor, never cared bout fame or fancy suits on the red carpet only playing roles that brought out parts he might not even know about himself and he indeed throws himself completely for each and every one of em

Hadn't heard that interview. I really love the one he did on "Tootsie" where he says he realized how many women he hadn't made connection with, simply because they weren't attractive. He looked near tears at telling it. Maybe if you revisit him ;) thank you.

I love this series ever since I saw the video with Luis Armstrong. I like how you animate, the interviews you pick and how much you respect you give to these incredible men and women while having fun at the same time. Do you think you can do interviews of Businessmen and/or people influencial in the computer industry (the late Nintendo ceo Satoru Iwata has some interesting interviews, so does Bill Gates, Shigeru Miyamoto and Gabe Newell) Movie directors (Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock), Artists (Andy Warhol and some people that I forgot) and some more of my favorite musicians (Layne Staley, Dave Mustain, Chuck Schuldiner and Freddie Mercury). Thank You!

Thank you producers, I'm really enjoying these a lot. You could spend a lifetime just on the interviews of Studs Terkel, which would be great… I can't wait to hear who's next. Will there be interviews of people whose names are less notable'? There's eons of a world filled with fascinating minds and stories sadly the advent of recording is mostly a late 20th century thing. Have you checked out archive.org? Granted, you are finding these by investing the time in some great archive work. It's a bit reminiscent of 'Lost and Found Sounds' …which I also loved. I'll just keep enjoying and living vicariously through your work with is clearly sheer pleasure, too. Dang, I should have gone into radio production! Thank you, again.

How do you figure that? He's been nominated for Oscars a million times, won two, was considered one of the absolute top actors of his generation, and was pretty much the first of his group to really "make it", first in '67 with "The Graduate" and then '69 with "Midnight Cowboy". If all he had ever done were those two movies, we'd still be talking about him.

This interview is probably in relation to the movie "Who Is Harry Kellerman And Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me"?, in which he plays a rock star dealing with celebrity. (Taken with Jack Nicholson's "Psych Out" where Nicholson plays a bass player with a pony tail, playing at the Fillmore, you get two of the greatest actors of their generation not being very convincing as rock musicians!).

"Celebrities" don't have anything meaningful to say today. For the most part, they don't give interviews, make music, movies, or art that actually expresses any of their ideas or opinions. Everything about being a celebrity today seems so superficial and backwards compared to what's said in this interview from 1971.

Hahaha “It’s sad that there were tradition oriented people” really weird. I see it now like I’ve never seen before, these people look at others who live how they’ve settled in their time and they pity them. Imagine if I thought I knew what was best for everyone better than traditions, the ego is absolutely mad! Whoa! Just think of how any people died to make a single individual and all that time, pre objective science, mankind had been pursuing a sort of trial by fire to produce the best ideas. Many died in the service of this and the stories, philosophies, cultures, and traditions established a framework to keep a culture alive! “What a poor excuse for a life not having sexual freedom was” what makes you think that these people were such slaves to their traditions? What makes you so sure that although less sexual gratification may have been a result, that these people of the old time didn’t have meaningful lives?? Sex is as old as tradition itself and is at the very core of a human being. I wouldn’t be so sure that just blowing the whole damn infrastructure out is such a great thing. The law of conservation of mass dictates that matter is neither created nor destroyed, I can’t help but feel as if that same principle may apply to the dimension of tradition.
