Seems odd to criticize the lens for not being weather proofed since none of the other tilt or tilt-Shift lenses on the market are weather proofed. The lens also has an usual and very convenient way to shifting. Would have worthwhile mentioning that. But thanks for review. Helpful.

@@DustinAbbottTWI hi. Hmmm. I have the canon 24mm TS-E. It has no weather seals. The Canon website in neither the specifications nor features mentions weather sealing. Maybe 17mm and 24mm are different but somehow I would think Canon would mention this if so.

Thank you. I have the lens that I use with GFX 50R or 100. It works OK with some vignette and give the resolution of the 100 in particular it does not seem to have the resolution to keep up. On the other hand it is actually useful on the Fuji X cameras where the crop factor translates to a 22mm which is a nice spot to be. There the resolution is more up to par

That sounds like a fair assessment. I would say that even the 45 MP that I tested it on is pretty much at the limits of its sensor-resolving abilities.

I love my Laowa lenses. They're built like tanks and are really sharp and beautiful. I love that they're manual focus as well as I prefer the slower more methodical aspect of photography rather than taking 100 fps eye tracking stuff. I mainly photograph abandoned buildings and odd retro architecture with a Laoea 105mm f2 STF usually doing a tilt-pivot pano and stitching the photos together. Occasionally I'll do multiple panos at different focus levels and then focus-stack telephoto panoramas as well. Everything turns out very beautiful and highly detailed.

I'm working much with Shift-lenses in the Nikon F-system. This rather new Laowa lens is unparalleled with its image angle. The huge image circle is common with the Nikon PC 1:4/19mm E. The Nikon has some advantages because it has the tilting function (but this makes the lens bulky and heavy). It may be decentrated for 12mm (Laowa: 11mm) and this may be done in the portrait format without issues! It's sharp and ful of contrast with very nice colors through the whole field. The edges are simply marvellous if You've focussed correctly. And the edges are often very important! Small lighting sources inside buildings are not problem with the Nikon with it's nine rounded blades, here the Laowa may give annoying results with its ten-pointed stars. Vignetting of the Nikon lens is very very low, and the Distortion very reasonable, a bit more than 1%, that means that it is visible in architecture, but You have to look very closely. I don't have any issues with the unprotected front lens of the Nikon. That was a surprise for me. The Nikon seems to be better than the Laowa with its 15 mm and the Canon TS-E with 17mm. But in the important aspects, the image reasults of the Laowa are much more than only resonable: contrast and sharpness in the edges. Apart from it's bulkiness in weight and size, the price tag of the Nikon lens is even more bulky and more than the double the Laowa costs. But after three years of work with this lens: it's worth each pound, dollar oder EURO. Not to forget the possible biggest advantage in daily use: the electrical connection between lens and camera. But I consider to buy the Laowa in addition to the Nikkor because of the additional image angle I need sometimes. Thank You very much for Your review. It's

Thanks for the review. I have some opinions, 1. I think it is better the lack of contrast, since you get more options for color correction and color grading 2. In terms of sharpness, it is obvious is not going to have the best result since it is an angular lens and the distance from the object is very far, but with some tweeks in LR you can get more detail and constrast as you need to. 3. For the price, is an excellent option, in comparison of premium lenses like Canon TS 17 mm, and better than Samyang. 4. Also for the mm it has, it works perfectly in a APS-C sensor camera, as you get an 24 mm TS, perfectly for facades, and double height rooms. I've been reviewing for months the different options of TS lenses at an affordable price, and this is the best option as far .

Odd that laowa is still foregoing electronic coupling (or at least a little chip just for exif data) on their new offerings when they have already demonstrated that they can implement them successfully in the laowa 100 for canon ef. Still, they have a way of coming out with products that are usually somewhat unique at a good price point and thereby alone justify their existence. Now if only they could figure out weather sealing... Thank you as usual for your thorough and unbiased review. About to hit those 100.000 subscribers which is certainly well deserved.

Nice review of an interesting lens! I wonder why it doesn't keep up with the much cheaper Samyang 14 f/2.8 in terms of resolution. Maybe it's because the Laowa has a much bigger image circle than what the Samyang has. A couple of notes: 1. Sony's mount is E-mount (not FE, that's a designation on E-mount lenses which cover full frame). 2. The shift is measured in millimeters (±11), not degrees.

Hey Dustin. as always nice review! I'm not sure you can attribute the lack of an auto-correction profile to the lack of electronics in this particular lens. The Canon 24mm TS-E, for example, will report back its identity to Adobe Camera Raw, but there is no option for an auto-correction profile because the software would have no way of knowing to what extent the lens is shifted (or tilted on other similar lenses that have that feature). Perhaps the RF tilt-shift versions will be able to report that information back to calculate a profile? Also, I'm not sure that weather sealing is an option for this type of lens due to the nature of how it works. I suppose you could moisture seal the connection at the lens mount but the lens itself is full of holes, so to speak to allow it to shift.

When I take picture, I notice in the Live view, that what I shooting is shaking when I press the button release and the image is not sharp. In order to prevent the shaking, I had to desable the In body stabilisator! Do you have any idea what is the problem? Looks the the Laowa lens does not work when the In Body Stabilisator in 'On'. The lack of electronics could be corrected fairly easy way - but you have to get the extra electronics from either Russia or Ukraine. In that sense, the most sensible option is to buy that lens in Nikon F mount because that would give you the best option for electronics: - you can get the Nikon "F" Lushnikov-chip and use FTZ adapter for Nikon Z (I think, there are also smart adapters from third parties) - you can get a simple Nikon F - to - Canon EF ring and use a similar Lushnikov-chip for Canon. That will allow you to use Canon EF - Canon R smart adapters, also Canon EF - Nikon Z "Fringer" adapter and similar ones for Sony. Unfortunately there won't be transmission of actual F-stop electronically and you are still limited to the aperture priority. At last, but not leats: with Megadap adapters you can transform this lens into an autofocus lens for either Nikon Z or Sony, same limitations as above (but the EXIF data won't be automatic as in the case of Lushnikov adapters). I am lucky as one of the guys selling Lushnikov electronic is just over the border, in Ukraine (a one-day car trip is required). Mukachevo has a neat medieval castle, always worth to check out and local vineries as well. Great thumbs-up, just ordered one LaoWa, there WAS (ROFL) one used in France for 900 Euro, with Nikon F mount. I have a Canon 17mm TS since a while and Nikon Z7 (with Fringer adapter). An other thing to underscore: while using a TS or Shift lens seem to be redundant (there are quite a few software systems which can correct the "keystone" effect - some like GIMP are even for free), this is not an option for movies or panorama. Besides, of course, there is always some image quality reduction. A good article is here: www.cameralabs.com/laowa-15mm-f4-5-zero-d-shift-review One more thing: the most common LaoWa Shift lens option is "blue ring". These lens have five-bladed diaphragm. There is an other option, called "red ring". These lens have a diaphragm with, if I recall, 11(?) blades. Better "Bokeh", but so-so "Sunstars". Really-really the last thing: buying a lens with Nikon F mount makes also sense because there are cheap tilt adapters. So you can transform it into a tilt-shift. The issue here is that a proper tilt-shift lens should focus beyond infinity (see the Canon TS-17). In the theory, nothing would prevent any manufacturer to make a tilt Nikon F Leica M adapter. In that case this lens would be the only autofocus lens in the world (due Megadap adapter). This option would be limited to Sony E and Nikon Z at this time, there is no such adapter for Panasonic "L" or Canon R yet.

For landscapes stopping down gives you the standard DOF, but I find I like to use F2 for the Bokeh which is rare on such a wide lens Tilt shift would be nice, if I knew of just a tilt shift add on for Sony mount in between the camera body and lens I would get one

Dustin, it's not 11°, it's 11 mm. The Laowa is ONLY a shift lens. If it could tilt, you could talk about "degrees", but you keep on repeating a serious wording error. Not good.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I tried to find out before. No luck. So, good you know about 😁 On some videos I've seen a text like "he/she meant...whatever". Might be an idea.

Eleven degrees of shift? Really? C'mon. Everyone who has ever used a tilt-shift or a shift knows they're marked in millimeters. The tilt/swing functions on those lenses that have them - those are done in degrees.

Hmmm, and yet the company that made the lens has made no objection to my coverage of this or their MSC. It's not that you're wrong (you aren't), it's just that you're condescending.
