My rescue Dutch Shepherd choose me! I’m his mom! He had already been to 3 other homes b4 ours, no one could deal with him. But the 1st time we met he came to me & stayed with me always like a shadow-(I call him youngest son because he’s super protective of me) so are my 2 other real sons! Best dog I’ve ever owned & sweet to his family. He comes with me everywhere & no one bothers us. 🌹🐶

Thank You sooooo much for this video. I recently acquired 2 Dutch Shepherd girls / sisters. Now reaching 5 month. Every thing you described here is absolutely true. I had all kind dogs all my life. And most of all how this Dutch Shepherd is so affectionate and loving and smart. I recently restarted back yard chicken . A few days ago one of 3 month old dead Ayam Cemani chicken was brought by these girls in front of the garage. I thought somehow they have killed perhaps when it flew out of the 4 foot fence. I was disheartened and chided them. But then when I went coop area in the back of house there were black feathers scattered all over outside the coop and found a dead hawk near by. Gathering what might had happened ..... how sorry I was chiding my beautiful Dutch shepherd girls. 😓😓😓

She had a bit of a stubborn streak. Very food motivated. I do not know what I will do when her time is up But until then ?....Shear ENJOYMENT!. This was a great video. TY!

i had this puppy wander up to me a a park one day.. bout 8 weeks old.. the vet didn't even know what breed it was. i had a car pull over one day and ask me was it a dog.. the long legs, long ears, and grey brindle coat..she was at least 12 when i learned she was a dutch shepherd. we bonded immediately.. you will never see another athlete like a dutch shepherd.shewent everywhere, 10 years after she passed people still asked me about her.. amazing doesn't even due her justice loving doesn't either,, if you are an active person, and want your eternal soulmate they are a dog or you.. if you buy plenty of basketballs and frisbees you will have a chance i was deeply broken hearted at thee time she came up to me.. the park was full of people, im sure she knew i needed her even at 8 weeks

Dutch Shepherds are not a "new" breed at all. In fact they are the oldest of the three Western European shepherd breeds, and are depicted on 17th Century Dutch paintings looking exactly like they do today. World War II almost wiped them out but careful breeding and laying down strict rules revived the breed although even today they are still not as common as German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois. It has to be said that the growing interest in the United States, especially in the past decade or so, has played a huge role in bringing the breed back centre stage. American breeders have gone to The Netherlands to acquire the best Dutch Shepherds they could get their hands on and are now breeding some of the finest "Dutchies" (or "Hollandse Herders") you could find anywhere! It seems clear that the US will play a major role in the long-term survival of the breed. Their astounding innate intelligence takes some getting used to. It can make them rather wilful and unpredictable if not kept under control.

I agree, I rescued my shepherd under the impression he was German, a smaller leaner one (he was still young at the time). He was a lot more wild and had traits that weren’t like my previous gsds, Then randoms we’d see out and about kept saying he was a mal and even though I knew he wasn’t one I was hearing it so much that I started doubting myself so I got a dna test. When I saw that he was half Dutch, I’d heard of them before but didn’t know anything about them, so obviously I went into full research mode and my God did it ever explain so much!! I wouldn’t trade my boy for the world 💙 I couldn’t imagine a full dutchie though! Hats off to you all! As you said, I can definitely see the same thing happening with the ds as did with the Belgian mals.

This video is very irresponsible. They're all of these wonderful things but they forgot the most important thing, 99% of people will never be able to give them the time it takes to train them, nor will they ever achieve the ability. Sure mine is perfect for me, but that's my life, and it's a full time job. Anything short is not only unfair to them, but again...99% of people will never have the dog they saw on youtube. Shame on whoever made this.

@@denisedaisy3357 So hard to say, especially because the specific blood line makes so much of a difference. My Dutchy came from a police line, very high drive, slim body, and is more assertive/aggressive than any other Mal we've ever met. Similar to the KNVP lines, they bred in the "guard" breeds like the different types of bulldog/pitbull. Same goes with the smaller working line Malinois. Her line was then bred with the 50% super Dutchy and a "full" Malinois to diversify the gene pool, which is pretty standard practice. But that means they come with not only the herding blood, but also the guard blood, an intense combo. I've done all of the bite work, scent detection, hunting training for fetch, agility, and adventure training that any top level working dog would be taught (except all combined into one dog), but the attitude was the biggest challenge, for my dog, with her specific blood line. Dog reactivity was a serious issue, even being socially and environmentally conditioned every day from 7 weeks old. We've done drive development through the roof, but switched ALL prey drive over to tugs, balls, and other things, so she can be right next to a squirrel or rabbit. But she still doesn't care for other dogs, and it took hours of work every day until she was 10 months old in order to get a handle on her going ballistic towards other dogs while on a leash. Not all are like that, but with her genetics, it's a miracle we got it under control. As for her waiting, it always takes a long time and lots of conditioning to get a high drive dog to wait for you without barking and being anxious. Mine waits in my truck for me all the time, and will just sit there quietly, but I'm not sure in what situation she'll be waiting for you. I would never want her to have to wait if she wasn't contained inside a car or home. The bike thing is great, but if you get one that wants to kill all other dogs, like my sweet girl, then you'll need to make sure you completely crush that challenge at every step of the training, which will be very exhausting and very challenging. That being said, I'm a trainer, and I never would have been able to do it if I were relying on another trainer to guide us, no matter who they were. BUT my girl was the highest drive pup of the whole liter, and came from a long line of biting dogs...so be careful who their parents and family is, and pick the right pup. Mine was "the playful one", even with all of the high level training she's had, most of the work was getting her to just be "normal" or something close to it. And now, she's a legend, but she would have been a total disaster if she wasn't "the trainers dog". You have experience with a Mal, so if you have the time and the know how to train working dogs ( which they need no matter what they do just to not be insane), and you can afford to commit your whole life to them, then it may be a good fit. I think Mal's are less likely to have guard instincts, and may be less work in terms of reactivity. Dutchies are more "muts" and the chains are a little looser for trying to create superdogs by determined working line breeders, but you won't read that anywhere. If you do it, I wouldn't pick the "playful one" from a working line, and if it is a working line, make sure they're not trying to create the ultimate apprehension "bite dog". I love my little partner, but when she gets excited her teeth chatter loudly and her whole body shakes...very intense girl! Good luck

I completely agree. First of all, replace the name with Belgian Malinois and the information is basically the same except for color. Most people have NO IDEA what high energy means and how much exercise and daily training for mental stimulation they have to have. If the average owner thinks they can train this kind of breed with a regular collar and treats they are in for an unpleasant surprise and possibly dangerous situation. Sure there are some top level positive only trainers who can but, get real, the average person can not do that. If I don’t work my girl, a 2yr old Belgian Shepherd, (GSD X Belgian Malinois) because I’m busy or tired or sick..omg, she nearly climbs out of her skin she is so hyper, so, no matter what, she gets that play and training time. I absolutely adore her, she is perfect for me but you have to have the time to put in the time to have a great Shepherd…German, Belgian or Dutch.

They require a lot of exercise, training, mental stimulation, and time. Most people should not own the breed because I guarantee it’s more work than they are willing to do and they will end up trying to rehome the dog.

Helping loved ones get theirs settled, with some scary stuff here and there. Year and a half rescue neutered, very skittish and hyper. Bit everyone at least once, including kids. Finally starting to get better, but still unpredictable. Reminds me of inbred German Shepherds that ultimately get put down for viciousness.😢

Actually positive reinforcement hasn’t worked with my Dutchie. Having walked her 6-7 miles a day morning, noon and early evening and using positive reinforcement and lots of treats hasn’t made her a better walker. She pulls, is easily distracted and reactive to other dogs. The one thing this video didn’t mention is that DS can be quite stubborn. I got my girl from a trainer at 8 months when my vet contacted her former Vet he felt my DS should be on meds. So my vet made up a list of good shelters that I could take her too. I couldn’t do that nor did I want her to be on meds so I kept her. I used praise, tons of love and treats and yes my vet has acknowledged some improvement but our walks remain a battle and my vet still wants her medicated for visits. So I am glad you had success with your DS using praise, treats and love but for some of us it is not that simple. Did you know many people return their DS between ages of 1-2. I am taking her to a trainer who uses variety of methods to help me help her.
