Dutch might've genuinely loved Arthur as a son, but Arthur's value was reliant on how useful Arthur was to him, at any time; his value being more important to Dutch, ultimately, than Dutch's earnest feelings for him (as a Parental figure). Dutch realizes this mistake at the end, when it was far too late for him to do anything about it; he walks away, in so much shame that he leaves Arthur to die alone. [Arthur, for his part, was simply satisfied with getting John out, convincing Micah as being the rat to Dutch (Dutch abandons Micah in all endings), and being able to die (in peace from both of them, with High Honor) free from any disillusions about his Life.] Arthur was his Col., he made newer gang members feel insecure, so that they always performed their best to prove themselves; he was the most reliant/dangerous gun, and Protector and Enforcer of the gang. Once Arthur was captured: then later became *visibly* sick, specifically: Dutch willingly sacrificed him; because it was an atmosphere where members had to constantly prove their value. It's when Arthur becomes *visibly* sick, that Dutch becomes distrustful of him. [Narcissists can love, but it's not a love of value to anyone.] It was only when he saw just HOW sick Arthur was at the end (on Death's door), that Dutch realized how severely he fucked up this time; this time, he sacrificed more than he was able to bear.

Yup, the whole thing about being able to buy land out west but Dutch turning down last minute without a clear reason, personally I think Dutch never would’ve been able to settle into a quiet low profile life, whether in Australia or Tahiti, what he wanted was an eternal war against his philosophical enemies, ie: the government, the wealthy and just about anyone else he disagreed with

Subscribed. Excellent narration, editing and opinion well thought out. Dutch mirrors Arthur in reverse (if you go down the redemption path). While Dutch loses it part by part, Arthur goes in reverse, both facing important choices. Only the difference is Arthur's choices only affect him, Dutch has a gang relying on the person he projects to them.

I personally believe that Dutch Van der Linde was a man with a strong sense of honour amongst thieves and that he did genuinely care for his 'family' of outlaws. However, I ALSO think that he definitely had a side to him where he uses the gang more as a tool than as a family. There's his brain and heart and then there is his NATURE which is brought up heavily in the end of the first game. Dutch started out as a man who cared about Arthur, John, Hosea and pretty much everyone else that joined him. He took pride in his honour. But, again, he still always had that darker more selfish side to him. The nature of an outlaw. Over the course of the end of the Van der Linde Gang, we see a man who is fighting a war within himself. A war between his honour and his NATURE. However, he cannot win this war before the end of the gang when time runs out. As the world closes in on him, he makes more rash decisions. Decisions that he starts making with less thought and more of his instinct - more of his NATURE. His NATURE is to be selfish. When he starts tuning into that nature of his, his sense of self and morality start to slip. With Hosea gone, his one moral compass, as well as the whole world chasing him from every corner and the stress of knowing that there are doubters amongst the gang, any charismatic leader would start to slip under these conditions. Micah starts to encourage him to give into that nature. That's what Micah and Arthur represent within Dutch. Arthur represents Dutch's morality and honour. Micah represents his selfish nature. I also find it convenient that Arthur gets the sickness by doing an act that is selfish and corrupt for the gang. As Dutch starts to slip further and further into his nature, Arthur starts to die and becomes less and less relevant to Dutch. Micah however, the one who represents his selfish outlaw nature, starts to gain more influence and power over Dutch as Dutch starts to listen to him more. Think of it kind of like Arthur and Micah being the angel and devil on Dutch's shoulders, except the angel's voice is getting weaker. By the time Dutch decides not to go rescue Abigail in chapter 6, Arthur, the representation of Dutch's morality, is completely ignored by Dutch, no matter how much Arthur begs him to listen. We can also see this whole 'angel and devil' thing visually represented in the cutscene as Arthur and Micah are both on opposite sides of Dutch. Micah encourages Dutch to give into selfish nature and Arthur tries to pull him back and remember morality. We can literally see an argument that Dutch would be having between his devil and angel. Micah (devil): "Without John, she's just bait." Arthur (angel): "So are we just going to let the boy be made an orphan?" Dutch: "It-It ain't like that!" Arthur (angel): "Then what is it like?" Micah (devil): "I wanna live, cowpoke! I still got the choice. Dutch... it's just a girl." Dutch: "... you're right." Arthur (angel): "Dutch...!" Dutch: "It pains me to say it, Arthur... but he is right." Arthur (angel): "DUTCH!" And, of course, the devil wins out and Dutch gives into his nature, literally leaving his angel - his morality - behind. When Arthur dies, we can see that Dutch still did care for him. Just look at his face. In that moment, we can see a pained look on Dutch's face. When Arthur says "I gave you all I had... I did." Dutch says "I..." but says nothing further. It's left up to the player to decide what he might have said. Would he have said "I'm sorry?" Or would he have said something else? Dutch can't admit that he did wrong, that would be straying away from his nature. The truth is, Dutch probably knows he messed up. He knows that a lot of what happened is his own fault. But how can he admit that to himself? He is a man that, in his eyes, can do no wrong. It is everyone else that has wronged him... even if he knows it's a lie. Another battle between his morality and his nature. But we can see that Dutch did in fact love Arthur like a son, but Dutch fell to the devil's influence. Instead, Dutch decides to just run away and not look back... He can't admit fault. That's against his nature. This is exactly what Dutch describes in his ending monologue in the first game. He says that he "can't fight his own nature and he can't give up to stop fighting." Dutch himself is a paradox. By the time of the first game, he abandons all morality and has given in fully to his nature, kind of symbolised by him wearing a red shirt like Micah did. But never forget that Dutch did have love in his heart, love for Arthur and Hosea and his gang, but the devil and Dutch's corrupted nature stripped the love away from him. The question posed in the second game is whether Dutch simply fell to insanity or if he was always this way and was just putting on an act the entire time. I personally believe it's both. Dutch Van der Linde cared about his gang and cared about his morals and sacred code. But he always had that darker side to him, as it is in his nature as an outlaw. What happened is that, as Dutch started losing that sense of morality, his nature won out in the end. Once an outlaw, always an outlaw. That's Dutch Van der Linde.

I feel like Dutch would've saved Arthur at that point, Arthur is too important to both him and Hosea to just take that hit, plus he wouldn't let Colm take another person who he loves (at least at that time) away from him He was likely "thinking of a plan" or just didn't know/realize what was going on; there's a camp interaction you can have with him afterwards where Dutch apologizes (and sounds genuinely sorry) that the whole situation happened, and Dutch genuinely thought everything was fine
@joeboah6040
@joeboah6040 11 ай бұрын
Dutch and Micah didn't know what exactly happened to Arthur after that encounter. After Arthur goes unconscious, Dutch and Micah most likely flee the scene since Colm doesn't want a parley. They however notice that Arthur is not coming, he's missing. You can assume a lot of things then, the Ol'driscols might have ambushed him on the road and killed him, or maybe they captured him, maybe he left to pick up some ginseg. I am sure Micah told Dutch that Arthur is dead and that there is no hope for him, Dutch conflicted was most likely thinking of a plan. As you said, he didn't know what was going on. If Arthur didn't manage to escape, there are 3 scenarios. 1:The bait succeeds and the members of the Van der linde gang who came to save Arthur are caught. 2: Dutch is convinced by Micah that it is a trap and decides not to go. At which point Colm most likely just gives Arthur to the bounty hunters considering he has a 5000 dollar bounty. (Fairly unlikely scenario) 3: The Van der linde gang manage to defeat the bounty hunters(or pinkertons we don't know who Colm would call). And they rescue Arthur.

I doubt Micah telling Dutch that would've worked, Hosea (and/or John) would've seen right thru Micah because he knows Arthur wouldn't go down that easy and would tell Dutch that, Micah's lies and deception work when they do on Dutch because Dutch has no one to turn to who he trusts (since Lenny and Hosea are dead and they are the only other gang members he confides in@@joeboah6040

Mmm, idk. I don't think Dutch knew initially but I feel he knew something happened to Arthur and just chalked it up to collateral damage. Like "Damn, they got him...oh well, that sucks". Very apathetic. Remember their plan was to meet up at the fork no matter how the deal went. If Arthur didnt show at the fork, as was their plan, that should raise concerns. It's one of the first moments we get to see that Dutch's loyalty to Arthur is not on the same level as Arthur's loyalty to Dutch. The whole reason Colm said he kidnapped Arthur was to lure Dutch in because he believed Arthur was that important to Dutch. Had something happened to Dutch, I have zero doubts, Arthur would've searched and went after the O'Driscolls. Dutch's apology to Arthur, once Arthur got back to camp on his own, seemed like someone who knew they were in the wrong for not, at least, attempting to save a loved one. Arthur reads this and has a feeling of doubt for Dutch's level of reciprocating loyalty and asks if he was ever planning to save him. To which Dutch responds "of course I was". However, we know he didn't actually do anything. To me, Dutch came off incredibly disingenuous to Arthur.

@@Ghost_of_Cantinas Agreed. I do believe that Micah might have kept telling Dutch that Arthur is dead and that there is no hope for him, clouding Dutch's judgement. Who knows, this might all have been a ruse set up by Micah cooperating with the Ol'driscolls. I do agree with everything you said here though.

God of War was an amazing game, especially after the previous ones. The story was brilliant and overall just an incredibly enjoyable game. However RDR2 revolutionized the gaming world. It set the standard for future open-world games. There is so much to explore and even after my 6th playthrough, I still find new things. They're both spectacular games, yet RDR2 was far longer and had more of an emotional attachment towards its players, I'm not saying GoW2018 was bad by any means as it was a brilliant game, however it's competition far outweighed itself.
