+ErrorIam It's interesting to hear you say that; I've long had an impression of this theme as encompassing the span of a civilization's history...a promising, hopeful introduction, resolving to uncertainty as the melody begins, thereon evoking a whole range of conditions: triumph and loss, peace and strife, jubilation and despair. Eventually it all comes full circle and the cycle repeats itself forever.

Theres this eerie objective distance like in learning about typical human history, an understanding of patterns and cycles of history, no real agenda or sentiment, just "these things happened". And thats why I love this game, All of the sentimentality is what the player brings into the world. There are just these facts: Who fought with who, what minerals are around, what creatures exist together -- and its up to the player to feel how they will about it all. For instance, there is this great detail into the psychology of each dwarf and their piety, their loved ones etc. and what we ourselves superimpose is this idea that they are stupid/ get in the way/ just these silly dwarves and playthings. But we say that obviously because its a game, but also they get in our way, at the end of the day we are interacting with the system and wanting something out of them. Ultimately in our attempts to control the dwarves we are just re-actualizing history and understanding it better ourselves. We along with them are trying to tame the ecosystem they are thrust upon. And then when something we find noteworthy happens, we impose a character on those involved. Emergent storytelling!

+Batman Drinks Pepsi I can run through it all in my head, but whenever I have a go at it on the piano or whatever, I quickly lose my orientation. There are a lot of dissonant chords and off-kilter progressions that make it hard to follow intuitively. That's an interesting story you cited. Social commentary aside, there's definitely a similar hypnotic, alluring quality about this tune.

Sounds like how people treat how Dwarf Fortress is meant to progress. I honestly don't understand how people find the game so hard to understand, once I got used to the general principles and stopped going blind staring at the ascii it seemed blindingly simple to me.
@queenmedusa934
@queenmedusa934 8 жыл бұрын
Dante Torn GnomoP People find it hard to understand in the same way that someone without experience flying a spacecraft would find the controls of a spaceship to be hard to understand: they are faced with an overwhelming set of controls and options and have only a vague idea at best of what any of them actually do. Once they are taught extensively how the mechanism works, it's easy for them to work with it. You asking why people get confused about the controls to the game when you're perfectly acclimated to it, as a result, doesn't really mean anything. You looked through the controls, figured out how it worked, and learned how to operate it perfectly. People who don't have that same experience you do will obviously struggle and complain when the help they ask for that experienced people give to them boils down to "I don't understand why you have trouble, it's obvious to *me*" and "you're a faggot."

@GamerKilroy
@GamerKilroy 7 жыл бұрын
DF has a pretty much vertical learning curve, i agree. My friends gave up after only teaching them designations lol. Still, this amount of controls is NEEDED. The amount of stuff you can do in this game is astonishing, and even if a skilled player can quickly use the correct command to check what he wants to check, a newbie won't. Yet, once you master the commands, the game is all about careful planning and prevention. Also, the embark is pretty much the core decision of "difficulty". I often find myself starting in a very difficult place (Terrifying, Glacier...) or with a horrible embark team and resources (Minimalist start, only one dwarf working...) to get a greater challenge. Still, it took me several years to be able to do so. For new players, even making the fortress survive (booze, food) is kinda difficult. Avoiding tantrums is another problems, cause most new players either do not expect that, or underestimate the threat of a tantrum spiral. They say practice makes perfect, and it is true. After a lot of years of play i can safely say i can tackle almost everything in this game. Still, the game WILL find a way to f*ck you up, trust me. No fortress will last forever (Steel webspinning FB with poisonous breath i'm looking at you), and will eventually fall. The game gets easier the more you play it, as normal. Just look at games like Dark Souls, for example. The first time you play you die over and over, and the 50th run you quickly demolish most bosses without even taking a hit. The challenge in this game, after you have mastered the controls, comes from the player himself. Having to manage so many things quickly becomes habit, and if no problems appear, easy. That is why expert players usually try to have more "Fun". So, the main difficulty is the extremely step learning curve and insanely high complexity. Once you learn those two, it's up to the player to decide what challenge he wants. Even as an expert player, i've found myself starting in a pacific area with plenty of resources only because i wanted a calm fortress. So it is up to us to decide the difficulty, and there are no scripted ones like "hard" or "easy". That's what i really love about Dwarf Fortress.

There's just something about the music in dwarf fortress that's so...indescribable. It almost seems strangely morose in a sense. The clearly home recorded sound quality with the ever so gentle white noise is a crucial part of it, i feel. It sounds like the restless dreams of a poet from a hundred years ago.

As a classical and electric guitarist of 11 years, I must say that this piece is beyond brilliant. If this were published on Itunes it would get alot of reputation with the classical musicians. If only this song were put out there more it could be something many professional guitarists play.

This song was my first exposure to the genre of "American primitivism." When I first played DF as a high school sophmore, I remember being struck by the hypnotic finger-picking in this song. This song always reminds me of the very moment you embark on a new land, both nervous and excited. As your 7 starting dwarves dig out the meager start to a hopefully grand fortress. By the time you're 7 hours in the music is completely blocked out of your mind. So this track is only on my mind in the beginning.

When I started to play Dwarf Fortress I fell in love with the music in the game but began to grow tired of it after having it loop for 6-8 hours a day. I began to look for similar music, first starting out with stuff like "medieval guitar" and "celtic guitar" until I finally found classical guitar. I began listening to the greats while I played, Segovia, Paco de Lucia, etc. I fell in love with the instrument. Now 2 years later I have begun lessons. Thanks Toady for inspiring me to create beauty.

Man, it's so refreshing and a major relief to see a freeware game have actual good, well-crafted music.
