There's two major reasons to turn raw lumber and raw boulders into stone and wooden blocks. It multiplies them, and they're much lighter, and thus much easier to haul. Telling a stoneworker to carve a marble boulder into blocks gives you four marble blocks. You could use one boulder to make a marble wall or floor, OR you could carve it and get four for the price of one, since MOST things that can be made with raw wood and stone can also be made with blocks. Not quite ALL things, but MOST of them. Blocks are also lighter, so dwarves haul and build with them faster. If you want to build above-ground structures, or if you want things to color/material match in rooms, making blocks is a must.

I believe the multiplication is only for the stone. Wood just becomes lighter and makes nicer looking structures, compared to logs, when processed into blocks.

Pig iron was the name given to the iron produced by a particular method of smelting, where the iron in question was poor quality or mixed with other minerals to create imperfections. Many cultures in the medieval times did not have access to high quality metals like the Japanese or the ancient English. Its a really interesting idea, that this is where the common myths of unbreakable or magic swords come from, most having been crafted out of purer materials, or even accidental carbonization that leads to basic Steel

@@daiko3733 ancient Japanese metallurgy was amazing; using some of the worst materials available, but offset with a mastery of geometry and physics, to be able to produce massive blades that lasted a while if swung correctly, top notch. their skill only got better when the Dutch began trading, but that came with the downfall of most melee weapons as a whole as Samurai rushed to buy Muskets

Some things you can/should do when it comes to your tavern and dining hall is some stockpiles, bins and chests. A stockpile for all your food and drinks so the dwarfs don't have to go up to get it, then down to eat it over and over again. Then another stockpile (which doesn't have to be big at all, like 2 tiles) for all your mugs. In the tavern, there should be a chest which will fill up with mugs as well. And of course a tavern keeper to serve all your dwarfs and visitors.

I tried to get back into Dwarf Fortress with Classic - both vanilla and the Long Night total conversion - before getting the Steam version and I've had to come to terms with the fact that my eyes aren't what they used to be when I played practically every day in the 0.3x days. At least I can live vicariously through AA's gameplay without the chance of eyestrain

Around 9:00 : no, you're not going mad. Limestone blocks were definitely visible in the list before, and they did not appear when you searched. Seems like a bug.

With cage traps, any friendly unit will not trigger it, unless there is web on it or they get webbed by a beast while they are on the trap. Forgotten beast can be captured if there is web on it or they get webbed by a spider while standing on a trap.

Falling at least two levels also stuns them, which temporarily removes trap immunity. Thus a pit trap onto a cage trap works to capture forgotten beasts

"I thought we'd be doing better in this series" I mean... how? What's your measure of "doing better" in a game you admit you don't even really know how to play? Do you even have a goal in mind, that you feel you haven't been able to meet which is why you'd feel like you'd be doing better? Because, anybody who's played DF will tell you, there's no *point* to the game. There's no win condition. You'll... literally just be here managing your manlets until the heat death of the universe -- and in that regard you are succeeding.

Honestly? I prefer watching Dwarf Fortress from someone who is still learning, like me. I was watching a guy who had been playing for years and was like "you need to build your fort like this because x enemy can do y!" And I would rather find out on my own.

FYI, limestone is sedimentary, not metamorphic. You're probably thinking of marble, which is a metamorphic rock formed from limestone.

One complication with your archery training might be uniform clash: woodcutting, hunting and mining (which you have everyone doing) labours have their own uniform. This complicates using squad uniform, so disabling those labours from military dwarfs could help. EDIT: Archery squads can also be all kinds of messed up no matter what you do currently (and historically). Personally I'll stay away from them in the current version.

Hematite can be both metamorphic and sedimentary. It is also an accessory mineral in igneous rocks. This information brought to you by Google.

i can think of two reasons your archery stuff isnt working point a. theres a bug if you put arrows in barrels just have them on the floor they dont go bad point b. you might need an arrow stockpile in the barracks

Advice for Dwarf Fortress newbies: First, you can't put off FPS death with processing power.* Unless there have been significant changes to the Steam version (or the standard version since I last played), don't think to yourself that you love this game and use it as an excuse to spend a bunch of money on a better machine to let you go bigger. I've read blogs & forum entries about people who've tried that, and they report negative results. Your problems are pathing, stockpiling, efficiency, and work-flow management. IIRC, pathing is what kills your FPS; the other three are what causes nothing to get done in spite of good FPS. (Other FPS killers include dirt, wear & tear on clothing & equipment, and animals. Puppies & kittens are a good, reliable source of meat; a breeding stock of dogs & cats will save a lot of headaches, but you have to keep track of their population.) Second, don't do experiments, big maps, old worlds, or anything like that. Just do small throw-away forts that you abandon quickly. Then make a new small(-ish), young(-ish) world, because the game tracks every named/significant entity in your world and it will quickly eat up processing power. I'm still newbie and I've probably put in a couple-thousand hours over the years, playing on and off, and I can assure you that *new embarks never get boring.* They don't feel like grinding; they feel like lottery tickets, because _this one may be the winner!!!_ Stockpiling is what murders small, beginning forts in my experience. Third, if you want a stop-gap to keep your dwarfs from dying of poverty, gather plants, make food from them, and sell them in rock pots. It _feels like an exploit,_ but when you think about how much people pay for a few pennies of food expertly prepared in a restaurant, you'll understand that the added value is justified. You can use this to buy things like clothes, weapons, and armor, while you work out how to actually manage a fort. Fourth, if you play in worlds just old and big enough to have ruins, you can usually send out dwarfs to gather some reading material. This is a way to gather some library material at essentially zero cost. This is another trick that feels like an exploit, but you've got bigger problems when you're learning the game. *Beyond some minimum. I could rock a ten-dwarf fort, at twenty dwarfs it would have problems, at thirty I'd have to abandon the world and start over. The computer I was using was average when it was made in, like, 2007.
