Stu, this is one of the best video on tires out there on KZfaq right from the horse's mouth. Crucial information. As always, you make our riding even better and safer.

Another great video that goes into detail. Some remarks: Grip between a Rubber and Rubber surface contact is greater than Rubber and Road. So road that has been ridden contains more in-bedded rubber from previous use and offers better traction. As tire temperature goes up the Adhesion (attraction between dissimilar materials) with the road goes up. Yet the Cohesion (attraction between similar material) of the rubber material goes down (tire becomes greasy) at elevated temperature . The cohesion vs temperature and the adhesion vs temperature are not entirely linear relations. I would expect that the rubber contains additives to achieve more linear relation in order to make the tire more predictable in its traction behavior. But this is probably at the cost of maximum achievable grip used in street tires.

Thank you. Really great video. Didn’t know about some of these things even after watching countless traction videos over the past 4 years

Very informative and useful this is. I've gone from Pirelli Super corsa to Michelin Power cup 2 for track and the difference is like night and day. Michelin are the best!

Very informative. Thanks. The one question I had was how tire pressure affects the keying and adhesion of the tire. For instance on a super hot day would you increase the pressure a bit or bring it down a bit to promote or maintain grip? By how much? Maybe next time.

Good to see the numbers for tire temps, I measure with my infra red device but didn't really know what the numbers mean. I get around 140 after a mountain ride.

Laguna Seca bit me from cold tire crash. Heat in left side of tire is easy. Heat in right side not so easy. Was in race tire rubber so when they get cold from chatting it up in the pits. Best put some respect on cold race tires. Otherwise get checked off.

Yup, on a cold day the tire can cool off pretty quick just waiting to get out onto the track. Because Laguna's surface is so smooth you need to get a lot of heat in the tires for them to grip well.

Great presentation. While tire air temp isn't the same as its carcass temp(s), they are related and thus would be good info to know. Why do TPMS systems as in the S1000RR (used at CSS) not give the option of reporting the tire air temp through the TFT? BTW, a clockwise track will have 360 degrees more total in right turns than left and the opposite on counterclockwise track directions.

Some racebikes put temp sensors in the fenders pointing at the surface of the tire and can record the heat on the left, center and right. You could do this on a production bike as well. I assume they don't due to the cost vs perceived value to the average consumer. Same with sensing tire temp through the TPMS, I think they could easily do it, but it might not be valuable to the average consumer vs the cost.
@bernhtp
@bernhtp 3 жыл бұрын
@@stumanrides Thanks. My point is that the TPMS sends the temp already. It's just not displayed anywhere, but would be a good proxy for how the tires are generally warming.
@stumanrides
@stumanrides 3 жыл бұрын
@@bernhtp if the display shows the tire pressure, you could use the rise in pressure from cold as an indication that the tires are warm. On the track, in general, you look for a 3-5psi rise.

@@stumanrides The perverse thing is the RR's pressure display normalizes for tire temp and its changes.
