holding that mono really payed off! i think in your position i might have been impatient and spent it on a city a bit earlier, putting a target on my back and taking away robber attention from black. thinking about it, i really like your line of play and obviously that level of planning ahead is one of the reasons you are such a strong player! i bet your opponents were convinced that mono was a VP. also, as always, the video turned out great. pacing and animations were on point! :)

19:45 DyL had been stressing about Black connecting to get Longest road, but DyL could easily build two roads and block Black from ever connecting. (and also give himself a good chance at longest road later). At the very least force Black to buy two extra roads and reduce his options for a place to build a long road. Maybe DyL doesn't care all that much about Black's road and was just trying to get Orange to spend on roads. If that was the case, it would be nice to give a heads up to the viewers. (DyL doesn't want to race for Longest Road, but blocking Black from connecting isn't a race. Again, not blocking him only makes sense if his real goal is to make orange buy roads, and it would be nice to be let in on that strategy)

He should have played mono then he could get 3 roads plus enough for dev and if road doesn’t get taken he wins next turn by playing knight

I’ve noticed a big part of his strategy is table talk getting other players to do what he wants. It’s usually what sets him above everyone else, but occasionally someone comes along who won’t cooperate and he struggles a bit more

He does tell the chat at 20:46 "I can take it myself, but I don't wanna race. And the reason is because we know for sure that black has the longest road (he says as his mouse circles the top of the board)" Black has strong wood brick in addition to a lot of room at the top of the board.

I am curious as to why you did not try to trade for a brick at 19:30 in order to build to roads towards the 5-4-10 to keep black from connecting... and at the same time set you up for longest road yourself. In fact, I think I may have even considered porting the sheep for another brick in order to do so. Turn would've been 2 roads and then a dev card - if that dev card was a knight, you just use your monopoly to get road materials and you only need 2 roads to win.

Great thought! Should’ve considered this more. I think this is a perfect line as long as you can get the knight, but not getting the knight can make your life miserable as you now need to save again for another city. With that said I wish I considered this line more during the game, but I ended choosing the line I thought was the safest.

brick mono should have brought you at least 5, so you could have built 3 roads and still buy 2 dev cards

At around 19:40 another interesting play to consider is buying a dev card and then mono brick/ore depending on the dev. The brick mono gives you at least four roads so you can stop black from connecting and get to 8/9 depending on the dev and can City/Knight next turn to win. Mono on ore could give you dev + City. Also gets you to 8/9. Obviously you pull ahead and become the target but nobody else has Knights and it stops anybody else from winning the next round. Any thoughts? Also it gives you outs for other devs as roadbuilding will help keep road and yop means flexible resources to extend road or city. Edit: ah nevermind continued watching.

At 11:23 I'd go for a Dev card. Much more likely that you would go over 7 cards than get 2 5s.

Would be nice to have some kind of icon pop up that lets us know if what you said is for the table or just your external monologue

Pause... I think here you buy a dev card... Your 8-brick is blocked and you have no brick, so a knight would be nice to move it off of there... You would also need two 5s to roll in one orbit to get a city anyways... At this point it's probably a bigger priority to claim the 10-3-11 in the middle and get to the 3-1 port on the 5-ore, rather than upgrading to a city... Without the 3-1 port, the extra production of upgrading the 8-5-10 doesn't matter as much as it would when you have the 3-1 port locked up... Once you have the 10-3-11 and the 3-1 port, you should be able to upgrade to a city rather quickly with double settlements on the 5-ore and 11-wheat, along with the flexibility of the 3-1 port... Holding and trying to build a city would just put you ahead and make yourself a target, without advancing your game all that much, and without having the 3-1 port first it would make it more difficult to deal with being blocked and robbed...

I would hold for a city because it's very likely the development card wouldn't get much value since you already have a monopoly card and also a knight wouldn't bring you far because you probably won't get blocked that much because orange is already at 4 and black is doing good too. Also it's not very likely you have to 7 out, because therefore either 3 different numbers from you+ a 7 or a 9 and another of your numbers+a 7 would have to roll.

What do you think about at the 19:44 area instead of porting the wood for stone, keeping the wood and mono brick, take long road, you can at least buy one dev and more if you have extra brick to port for another wheat, and if the dev is a knight you can win on the next turn (if orange doesn’t take road; they wouldn’t have any brick).

At 19:30, why don't you just plow black for longest road? Your only one knight away from largest army with a dev card in hand and it gives you the option of taking longest road for yourself for the win (you have good access to wood and brick). Orange would be forced to block you to prevent the win, you could potentially block/rob him to stop that although black would probably feed him but while they are focused on stopping you from building roads you could be building cities.

I think you can do it but it's risky as they can take back road as long as they collude to give longest road to someone else. I'd rather save the mono for a stronger turn.

I'd buy the dev card, If you hold and get robbed then you are hurting your chances even more. If you get a knight that that is some protection from other people blocking you and if you get Year of plenty then that increases your odds of getting the city. Worst case you use your monopoly to get the city once you have the Wheat in hand. Not the best play for a mono but with enough ore you could maybe get a city and a dev card to replace it.

There was a point where you could have 2 wood, a brick, 3 sheep, 2 wheat and 2 ore or something like that. You could have ported the sheep for a brick to block blacks road, or gotten the city. You didn’t even discuss the possibility of blocking blacks road and then connecting for road yourself and probably also picking up a city on the next turn. Curious as to your thought process there

Seems like a lot of people are asking about this, but basically, by cutting black off I think I start eating a lot more of the robbers and I want my opponents to be constantly fighting for roads since it burns their resources.

Are promises for future actions binding in Catan? Can't they just change their minds and say "no, I need this wheat now", and ignore their promise to trade the first wheat?

No they aren’t binding, but most people follow through. You can always do something like “if you don’t follow through with the deal, I’ll Rob you the next 3 times”
