In the BMW community, there's a lot of controversy between who reigns supreme the S58 or the B58. These motors share the same genetic DNA and are known for having the capability to handle a ton of power reliably. With both of these platforms taking over the drag racing world, its time to take a look at what sets them apart mechanically. In this video, we take a modified S58 and B58 with similar modifications and put them head to head to see who truly is the top dog.

I mean this is a really stupid question as the S58 is just a beefier B58, with more cooling, better internals and twin turbos instead of a single twin scroll. Of course the S58 is better. And I drive a 340i (B58).

Coming from a stock B58 to a stock S58, one thing I truly miss is the sound. My B58 used to pop and crackle. My S58 does not and just soubds so muted.

the s58 is held to higher emissions standards because it comes with a significantly higher power output from the factory. An adjustment in tune or modifications made to the exhaust system fixes that. Burbles are extremely overrated and overplayed at this point. They were cool for 5 minutes in the early 2010s. I like that they arent loud on my g80. I actually want them removed.

My BM3 Stage 2 E30 B58 is all I need. Sleeper car, over 500bhp with just an AA high flow cat and sounds amazing. As my daily, I don't need the forged internals, rigid chasis, etc, etc. M340i FTW IMHO. Oh, and the cracks and pops. Hnnnggg... Drove a G80, I'll take my G20 for $20k less.

@@snowman2834 stock for stock... the B58 engine makes more TQ at 1500rpm than the S58. Yes, the S58 makes more later on in the power band, but the B58 is smoother and faster to respond. Since you have more power earlier in the RPM range, you dont have to run the engine at high rpm all the time for instant response. This means better fuel economy.

646 rwhp for the b58 and 772 awhp for the s58 if your dyno uses sae correction instead of std correction factors. Something to keep in mind.

No you won't have the fuel or turbo buddy. S58 has 2 HPFP, and 2 bigger turbos. You will need do a lot more

@@BMR_WRLD clearly you didn’t watch the video properly buddy , he said the Supra made 100-150 hp less than the m3 and they both have the same/similar bolt ons so fuel is not an issue in this case and anyone whose going to be making power will be doing the pumps anyway so not sure why that’s even a factor. Also I was talking purely motor wise same bolt on b58 with rods and pistons makes same hp as s58 ? Doesn’t take a genius to understand that. Obviously s58 motor is superior from factory because it the m engine but it’s interesting to see the difference which doesn’t look like there’s a huge power gap to a non m engine for now

@@BMR_WRLD yeah no shit like i said the s58 is a hot roded b58 from the factory bigger turbo more fueling and stronger internal its a b58 that was remade by the M division the b58 also makes similar number if you give it enough fuel and turbo upgrade im not saying the b58 is better im saying there both the same family of engines one was made for more utility another was made to go racing but ironically funny enough the b58 has seen more racing sucess then the s58 toyota and bmw gt4 and road racing and time attack serires has shown the b58 to be very capable there bascialy fielding a bone stock b58 with upgraded cooling and has won many endurance and track event across the world.

Need to take the ecu out and send it off. Think the ecu gets cloned than returned.

I want to get a beemer, but shudder to think of the maintenance cost. I just hear/read that the price of admission pales in comparison to the price for sustainability? Would love an E46 M3. Even a 330 would be nice.

You have to almost approach it like a hobby when it comes to older //M car BMWs. The E46 330 would be a great choice those, relatively low maintenance costs and awesome handling. The M3 is faster of course, but you will spend more to keep it in good order. Stay away from the V8s and V10s unless you can DIY or hate your wallet --- coming from someone that owns both lol.

Or do all your own maintenance. I've got a 2021 BMW M550i stealership charges almost 2k an axle for brakes and rotors. I did it myself for 5 hours of my time and about $700.

My OG e39 540i 6 speed is slower, but none of these engines are as harmonic as the M62 or S62 N/A... I need that analog feel, too much tech on these new bimmas..

Don't be such a pussy-cat. I sent my ecu to Finland the day I got my car from the dealership. That said, I do know from past experience that my dealer will still cover non-engine related issues.

I've heard the B58 is better for tuning because its designed with a diesel variant in mind, the b57. i cant confirm that, just an opinion i heard

The B58 can’t be better, since the S58 is literally a beefed up B58. Better internals, cooling and twin turbos. The S58 is a B58 variant. This video asks a silly question.

Thomas is right. Also, your argument makes 0 sense because the engineering is completely different on a diesel engine. There's no reason to bring a diesel variant into the equation. As for tuning, if you're comparing from baseline, you'll spend around 5k to hit 750-800whp on an s58, whereas 5k on a b58 gets you 550-650whp.

If I was doing a drag build.. I would choose the B58. If I was doing a track build I would definitely go with the S58.

its pretty much the same motor with different turbo and internal setup its a hotter stronger and spicier version of the b58 just like the s55 is to the n55.

@MichaelSchwab-nk4rm I've had mine 4 years and no issues with FBO. Not sure what the others were running. I've got an N54 build, a B58 build and an S63 build. It's not even close. The S63 kills everything in my garage including my Merc AMG and vette.

the chief engineer did a reddit AMA and stated they hardly had any work to do because BMW made it so reliable. They pretty much signed off on what BMW presented to them. S58 owner here.

also a dumb argument to point out a drag focused car reigning supreme over an entire platform. 99.99% of both b58 and s58s are street cars. Dump 5k of mods into both and the s58 will be at 800whp whereas the b58, 6-650whp. Keep clinging to the 1 or 2 b58s running 7s as though that's what matters lmao. Teenage mindset.

The b58 that’s in the 7s is a fully custom built motor… I like the b58 as I’ve owned one myself , but I’m looking towards the s58 now so I could get more power without building the motor .

Open hoods do not work on the street. A real fan box with closed hoods is necessary to get real world operating configurations.

I don’t think most of us do… I’d be the first to tell you an S58 is superior to my B58. Of course it is, it’s the beefed up version of the motor. That said, the B58 is a fantastic mid-level tuning platform.

I don’t think anyone thinks that. The s58 is definitely superior and beefed up. I think the hang up for a lot of people is the sound. S58 sounds terrible.

@@Cali4nium I just think it sounds awful period. Doesn’t sound like it should. The b58 has a nice deep tone. The s58 is too raspy and high pitched. I can see people thinking it’s better, but mechanically that’s not the case. Drag racing wise the b58 is a good performer. The sound is why I did not buy a m3.

@@98ws6m6cvert like I said, owners remove resonators, that's why you hear the rasp and the 2nd turbo doesn't help either. You are aware G80/82s break into 9s with just an E tune? S58s hold power 'til redline. Anyone buying an i6 tt is not having the exhaust note be the deciding factor...that's what V8 guys say when they can't compete with boosted i6 or v6s lol

B58 is King. B58 is in the 7s and has many cars going 7s. Only S58 close to 7s is RK Auto which was an 8.08. Sorry boys, you say M engines are better but forget history. I also had E92 M3 which was slow as shit and also own 2011 335is that would shit on my M3. No just cause the engine code starts with S it isn’t better 🤡 B58 IFYKYK and if ya don’t 🤣🤣

What I would love to see is, the B58 with the upgraded internals similar to the S58 and a huge garret dual ball bearing turbo to account for the twin turbos on the S58.

Guess that's the point of the video. I'd say that's worth the 20k difference or less depending on the deal. If you ever built a motor or any car for that matter you'd see the value. Oem reliability and 100hp + more practicality of 4drs and trunk space with capable suspension and all wheel drive to hook. M3 or ftw all day.

To be fair as an M owner myself, all the M cars are mass production cars found in damn near every variant of the bmw line up. People can literally make whatever they want as fast as they want with the wallet. M cars to me play a huge factor in the handling and suspension department. I wouldn't compare a twin turbo set up with a single turbo set up. It really comes down to what platform you want. M ISNT THE END ALL BE ALL. That's like me saying my 1000whp c7 z06 destroys my f80 m3. Different cars different engines. Just have fun with what you as the owner picks. There will always be some one faster. Stock for stock the s58 is a more powerful engine to be expected but the b58 is also very tried and true in reliability and power. I'm just glad that these cars still exist in a world heading towards EV 😢

@@wingedhussar5528 Never said BMWs are like Bugatti's. Before getting my G87 M2 I had a F87 M2 Comp that I tracked heavily and had my fair share driving Supras and M340i. If you understand the kind of characteristics and build of a "motorsport" engine is like.. you would understand how different the S58 is to a B58. But of course.. anything can be built to go racing.. the S58 is just more race ready.
