Dyson DC39 Animal vacuum repair, motor replacement

Dyson DC39 Animal HEPA canister vacuum repair. The motor was damaged, making a grinding noise and smelling like ozone. This video shows the procedure for swapping out the damaged motor for a new one. The new motor was $85, which is MUCH cheaper than the $700 vacuum cleaner. The full repair took about 20 minutes (the video plays at 2x speed) and required a small T15 torx driver and a pair of needle nose pliers.

Thank you very much for this video. I changed the motor in 20 minutes, it was very easy with your video. One thing I would add is that there is a lot of dust in the motor compartment, so it would be a good idea to have another vacuum available or to use a soft brush to remove it to a bin.

Really good detailed video. My only comment would be to replace the clogged Hepa filter as this would reduce the life of the motor due to overheating.

Just did the replacement today. Everything went pretty well. It took me about an hour. Just a bit of an issue with the screws (those that are located deep). Followed your advice and use an Allen key. I was worried about the wire connections (they are not clearly label) but you can't miss them since the motor goes only in one position. At any rate, thanks again for posting.

The reason the motor burns out is the hepa filter is blocked so your new motor generally wont last long. Also the reason the hepa filter gets blocked is the cyclone gaskets develop holes on all DC39s as they used a substandard gasket foam.

Just awaiting new motor to arrive to exchange out. Probably say it's worth cleaning the internal filters as much as possible before re-assembly.

Yep, ours lasted 10yrs. Failed quite suddenly, giving up some smoke and terrible smell. Motor started to slow down before i turned it off. It also tripped the arc fault breaker ... before we reset that and tried again, that is when the smoke came.

Because this moron posted a video showing you how to incorrectly fix a Dyson. You must ALWAYS replace the post-motor filter or it will cause the new motor to overheat and die too.

Thanks for the video. My only question is about the carbon filter that surrounds the motor. It looked like it had some carbon pulled through and maybe that's what damaged the motor.? Shouldn't that be cleaned out or also replaced? I'm assuming that carbon will damage the new motor?
@2noracj
@2noracj 3 жыл бұрын
I think the carbon is coming from the motor, itself, not the outside world. Electrical contact to the spinning part (the commutator) is made by a pair of “brushes” which are basically spring-loaded bricks of graphite. Graphite is soft, highly conductive, and slippery, so it does the job without wearing down the commutator, even after literally millions of revolutions. But the brushes get sacrificed in the process. They wear down over time like a pencil lead (which is why they’re spring-loaded - to keep the ever-shortening block pressed against the commutator to maintain good electrical contact). This produces a lot of carbon dust over time. If it’s really bad in your case, maybe you could vacuum it out? If only you had a working vacuum!
@wayne_3791
@wayne_3791 2 жыл бұрын
@@2noracj Wow....not only have you posted a ridiculous video showing people how to incorrectly do a motor change (because you failed to replace the post-motor filter) but you then go on to give ignorant advice about "vacuuming out the carbon dust" from the old filter.....which is impossible you muppet! (it's trapped in the filter paper you will only get the loose residue out it will still be blocked). I don't know what your profession is, but stick to it and leave vacuum repair to experts.

The white wall surrounding the motor is the filter. Not to sure if you already found the info out already. It is my understanding it is the motor post filter. However I could be corrected on the proper terminology.

Because the exhaust filter was saturated with the smell of burning and it was desirable to wash the motor casing before installing a new motor, the smell will pass over time!

It's a shame you didn't replace or clean the circular filter the motor assembly fits into. This is stupidly a non replaceable part as far as Dyson is concerned. This filter plugs up causing the motor to overheat and burn out. I'm sure this causes 99% of the motor failures. A vaccum must have all the filters clean to run cool and have a long motor life.

*AMATURE HOUR!!!!* .....the original motor failed because the paper post-motor filter is blocked causing the motor to overheat. All you have done is put a new motor in to suffer the same fate.
