The Little Blue Pot
Welcome to my KZfaq channel where I’m hoping to educate people on the different types of mental illness to provide an understanding and learn ways to cope. I also vlog about my own experience of living with mental illness, as well as sharing other aspects of my life. I want to raise awareness of mental health problems and mental illness, so I hope my channel helps you and others.
As with all my videos, I'm trying to explain everything as clearly as possible and provide examples from my life to help you understand. I might not get everything right every time, but I wanted to give it a go, and I hope it will be of benefit to you. This Vlog is from my perspective, but I do appreciate that not everyone will have had the same experience as myself - we are all different after all. I have also tried, where applicable, to reference everything correctly, but we are all human and make mistakes - please stick with me.

John, You symptoms sound very difficult to manage. When the thoughts of suicide arrive you can’t just leave it and think you will get better on your own, it’s a sign your body is telling you. The sign that the way out is simple. It’s an indicator you have to get help now. Dont play any around call for help.

Yes, I do suffer from the damned thing! Years of therapy, different countries, capable professionals, antidepressants, the lot. I learned a lot about myself, childhood, etc. But the thing seems to be incurable. Sometimes I think that major depression that comes and goes would be a better option if one could choose. This thing steals your life and does not quit.

Well I'm 14 and had every one of these symptoms in varying degrees since I was 6 and try hard to avoid claiming to have a form of depression because I've always thought "oh I'm just down, it's not a real problem for me and I shouldn't make light of it" but I've been slowly getting rid of the denial of it after realising that it's not just the normal state for everyone

Same. Despite childhood friends telling me "you always look like you're about to kill yourself", to me I was just feeling "normal". Same as always, it was only after I started taking antidepressants after a major depressive episode that I noticed I felt like never before.

I also refer to it as Dysthymia because that's what it was when I was diagnosed. I feel I was high functioning depressed ages 11-17 and started to be low functioning depressed 17- onwards. I'm in my 30s now and it *doesn't* get better. At least not for me. Or not yet.

I've had PDD since I was 7. I'm now 38 and was diagnosed 16 months ago. I was only diagnosed after many extremely stressful things happened in a small period and I watched my life quickly spiral down. Funny thing is that seems to be the norm for when a person with PDD gets diagnosed. Usually after a major stressful event or events. Medication and therapy is key. After 16 months of meds, I don't even recognize the old me. It seems so far removed from who I am today. Goodbye roller coaster, hello steady as she goes. I get up feeling good and I go to bed feeling good. That was certainly not the case for 28 years of my life. Medication is not going to fix everything. It only gives you a solid foundation to work on. There's still a lot of steps after meds. Because dysthymia is so persistent, we think it's just who we are and much of who we become is the person+dysthymia. So who is the person without dysthymia and the old habits we have because of PDD.? That's when the real work begins. Recognizing and changing is the hardest part. You can take meds and feel amazing, but those old habits can get you down. I am still trying to shed that part of me, but I'm up for the challenge, So for any of you reading this and think you don't need medication and or therapy, you're wrong. You are strong, but you can't beat something that sneaks up on you. No matter how much work you put into changing, you can't beat it alone. if you could, you would have already. The first step to showing real strength and change, is saying I need help.

Thanks five5x. You're such an inspiration, what's the name of the talking therapy you had? I've had lots of great talking therapy over the years from brilliant professionals. It really helped me too and gave me coping mechanisms to learn in day to day life. I've had lots of emotional pain in a very short timeframe recently and I think I need more therapy. Let me know what kind worked for you - of course one size doesn't fit all but I'm curious. Many thanks

What's interesting, and I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this, is experiencing both hypersomnia and insomnia - AND both over eating and loss of appetite. I was diagnosed with dysthymia at the age of 17. Based on how it's my "normal," I've probably had it most of my life (Currently 25). But... Experiencing both of these behaviors... It's a bit confusing and frustrating. I'm used to loss of appetite but at night I just want to EAT. Sometimes I have to ask myself if I'm actually hungry or just bored. The thing I struggle with the most is BOTH insomnia and hypersomnia. This happens every night: I stay awake late at my night. On average, I go to sleep at 6am. Once asleep, I can sleep for 11+ hours and then still want to sleep, still. The human brain is a fascinating thing...

Great presentation! Love your voice as well. About 5 years ago I was having trouble functioning. My wife asked if I were depressed. Well, of course I wasn't. I didn't feel any differently. Two years later went through a personal crisis and wound up in counseling. Found out I had had dysthymia for about 25 years. So I had just gotten used to it. The counselor told me when the crisis hit, I had "double depression". My normal state had been reset to low and when depression kicked in everything bottomed out. I was a complete mess. Lots of therapy, SSRIs and anti-anxiety meds and I'm much better today.

I discovered what PDD was last year and felt like the label I’d been searching for, for years had finally presented itself. I’m a young adult and since I hit early adolescence I always felt low-grade depression and anxiety but I always felt like what I had was never as bad as what people with major depressive disorder had and it made me feel extremely guilty. I haven’t been diagnosed but every time I’ve had a low or depressive moment I keep coming back to this term. I never felt that other diagnoses described me but I experience every symptom of PDD. How can I go about being potentially diagnosed? I know I could not have it as I am not a professional but I’ve been sitting on this information for a year and I don’t know how to go about getting help.

Hi Gem, I thought articulated your thoughts in this video well. And v glam with lipstick 😘 I have had a diagnosis of dysthmia (Adhenia?) and major depression. Also known as 'double depression' Yet in some way the labels'diagnoses seems superfluous or something.. in that I have always felt this way (to varying degrees) - it's my 'normal'. I thought for many years (and sometimes still occasionally do) that being 'angst ridden' with brief, and fleeting and tenuous periods of peace of mind and self acceptance - was the norm for everyone 😐

PS Through several years of psychotherapy - I have come to understand my 'depression' and self critical, self defeating way of being is in part for me - a maladaptive way of being that I have cultivated to cope from a very early age. As opposed to a physiological/'chemical issue. Disclaimer: Speaking here only of MY OWN understanding and personal experience with mental illness.

I have always suffered of it, I am looking for the right medication. I don't feel depressed, just living like a car always in first gear: poor concentration, poor self esteem, poor enthusiasm, struggle with daily activities and feeling of hopelessness. I am looking for a good medication, I am thinking to go with zoloft + wellbutrin but I have to go to the psychiatrist for that of course.

I can't recall ever knowing anything different. To me, it's just normal. Might be help where you are but not in Australia.

This may be me. I don't have all those symptoms, but I don't care about my bicycle hobby anymore. Sometimes I do, but then it comes back around and I don't. I've also been struggling with feeling incapable of doing household repairs and can't concentrate or make decisions. It's been going on for about 2 years. I would like to change it, but can't afford a doctor. Is there a free cure?

Sorry to hear your experience, I wish there was a cure. You could look at Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), try watching some videos on KZfaq. Taking care of yourself is also important as it will help you be better equipped to cope with the symptoms, but not always easy. It may take time to learn ways to manage the symptoms, but you will get there. CBT helped me a lot and there is a lot of stuff online about it which may help you. I wish you all the best. Take care. I have had this for about 40 years...I didnt even realize I had something I just knew something was wrong and I couldnt have relationships because I felt better alone, and had panic attacks at night and up all night because I am nervous..feelings of you cant relax or enjoy anything..I only feel good in spurts but feeling down and sad most of the time and not hungry. As far as guilt I dont have that. I dont look at it as an illness that is an ugly word. I do not want to toxify my body with drugs either. Any natural suggestions?
