The increased torque, use, and weight of E-Mountain Bikes put different demands on tyres than with mountain bikes. So Steve has got a great explainer of how to choose the right type of tyre for the type of riding you do on your E-MTB.

My haibike xduro came with schwalbe nobby nics with Apex protection, maybe stamped APX on the sidewalls. I set these up tube less and after 200 plus miles in sharp rocks and cactus lined trails of southern Nevada desert, no flats or punctures. So far I'm impressed with my plus size tires, I have blown out tires on these same trails with non APX nobby nics which don't fare too well on these rough trails.

IDEA - keep up the show I love you guys. IDEA - when you make a ride in specific areas, if would be great to have a visual of your tyres design and pressure(ex slab ride or the 41 degree climb) .

This "intermediate tyre" looks like my Specialized Storm - great allround trail tyre (my size 29x2.0) with nice rolling and lot of grip.

Hi guys great shows Ive just got a levo with 38 mm rims running 27.5 purgatorys which are great on the trails but what size tyre would you reccommend for a bit more road work that i could fit to these rims would the maxxiss minnions fit 650b's 2.6 ?

Great video, the explaination re tyre pressures was enlightening. I have the Maxis minion DHR and Maxis Rekon out back and have been running 15 psi. I dont like how it feels in the corners so will go to 20 psi. As I am 110kg should I go higher? BTW my Merida Eone Twenty has made mountain biking fun again, love the E bike.

The difference in the diameter of the tire does not directly relate to the change in the BB height. For example: going from a tire with a diameter of 710mm to a tire with a diameter of 720mm would produce a change in the BB height of 5mm. Not 10mm.

I must admit Steve I do like my 29 front, 27.5 rear on my 2015 Moustache, even though they are 2.35s. Maybe it’s my 50 years riding motorcycles that means it just feels more natural. When fitted there’s around 1.25 inches difference in diameter between the two with tyres I use. Which reminds me you didn’t mention ebike specific speed rated tyres. I use a Nobby Nic E-50 rated on the rear. Tough sidewalls. And a Hans Dampf front. E-25 or E-50 speed rated in kph, any thoughts or maybe the heavy competition tyres are just as good in terms of robustness and speed?

I got a Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 Action Team with a Schwalbe Magic Mary 2.60 (front) and a Nobby Nic 2.60 in the (back). I am looking for something more grippy in the back for the fall / winter conditions. On my ride yesterday in the woods, the rear tire is lacking grip on the leaves. What tire and size would you recommend?

Hey Steve. Great video. I do a lot of enduro dirt-biking, and when I am purchasing a tyre for wet weather or soft conditions (loam, mud etc), the actual compound on the tyre is hard - so that the knobs bite into the terrain and provide great traction. Conversely, many of my hard terrain tyres (for rocks, hardpack etc) are actually a soft compound, so that the knobs conform to the harder riding surface. This sounds paradoxical, but it is very often the case with motorcross and enduro tyres. Does this run true for MTB tyres? For example - surely a mud tyre for a mountain bike would also want a harder compound to bite into the slop, just like dirt bike tyres?
@tigerso5530
@tigerso5530 2 жыл бұрын
Bike weight is lower than dirtbike , even if it's ebike. So the traction on the terrain has different calculated to choice tire compound.

I’ll look at the psi on my butchers. I’m a fattie at 104kg. I’m finding the rear 2.8 that between 17-20 psi is squirming a bit under aggressive cornering.

I am 110 kg and am going to try 20 Psi up front and 24 rear. If you go higher and it works please post your results.

Eh, the difference between the 710mm and the 747mm diameter tyre will only result in a 18.5mm lower bb height. (37/2). And given that you are more likely to have the larger diameter tyre at a lower pressure than the 2" tyre, that means it will compress/flatten more when under load, so the difference in BB will in practice be probably be about 10mm, i.e. not worth worrying about. Why didn't you look at Smart Sams, which are probably the best compromise tyre for e-bikes (if you want to get every last mile out of the battery at least).

I've had two punctures my ebike in a month. The last one just wouldn't seal although plenty of sealant in the case . The hole was only a pinprick in size . My last bikes tubeless never went flat in a year and a half. even with some decent holes. I can't fiqure it out.

There doesn’t seem to be any tyre that has been designed and produced specifically for hardtail e-mtb’s. Given the lack of back end mechanical suspension and the extra demands put upon the both tires especially the rear tyre of a HT, why have tyre manufacturers not addressed this segment of the market? What tyre currently on the market would be best suited for a HT?

Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB is a tough tire designed specifically for MTB E-bike duty. The knobs in the center are tightly spaced so it should be relatively quiet for asphalt duty. In my eyes it looks to be the perfect drive wheel tire on an MTB E-bike.

Oh and yes I opted for the 2.6 sizing on my 650b Levo with a Specialized Butcher on the Front and a Pergatory rear they did a straight swap 👍 bit pissed the alloy version didn't come with a dropper post they're trying to sting me $500 au for a command post and I opened up the manual and out drops the command post manual hmmmm have I been dudded or what ?????

love the idea and the way ebikes are coming on ,but they are so expensive, and im sure 90 percent of riders cant afford one. Even on finance there over a 100 a month over 48 months , and if you want carbon , lyrics,fox 36 ,s and decent spec it is an astronomical price. I lucky to have a good paying job where i could afford one ,but what about the average paying job ? no chance. Its a lot to pay out over 4 years.
@gingermattb
@gingermattb 6 жыл бұрын
phunkybeatmonkey Whilst the tech is relatively new and volumes are low ebikes will stay expensive. They need to become truly mainstream for prices to come down meaningfully, but even then they will still be more expensive than traditional cycles purely because they have a lot more components and complexity.
